@boomerang and Macj - I am from Detroit and I love Motown, but Motown had that massive marketing machine, The Chicago sound is 2nd to none. You can hear their influence on a lot of early Motown, particularly the Temps' "The Girls Alright". I hear Curtis all in that one. And don't forget Maurice and the Radiants.
I really like how everybody is liking this. I'm from Chi-town (hollah) and this was a hit there. Good to dance off, great beat, great rhythm. These dudes were too good for that period though because music was sort of taking a turn away from DooWop which had been the music of those times. But hey, you guys share my same sentiments! Great music. Great talent!
@boomerang905 Agreed, boom..I'm from Chi-Town as well, and these guys were part of the scene right there with Major Lance, Gene Chandler, & Curtis Mayfieldd....Fucking Chicago Legends.....
@MACJO63 You got that right! I don't even think people know how good we really were and are, I mean we did produce Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock too. And our style of music? Hey, we invited swag and cool! I'm born and bread so I know! Don't get me started on that cool, sharp Major Lance whom I witnessed at the old Regal Theater on 47th. He jammed. I am so sorry he's gone. I miss Mr. Curtis like crazy and am glad that Mr. Chandler is hanging in there! : )
Ah one of the prominent songs during my coming of age period. I was 15, I remember this as being one of the last Do Wop songs. It was also an anthem for street corner singers
@charleyit I was a little older than you were at the time but you are actually right. Music had taken a different turn with the more psychodelic sounds but this was rocking and they were excellent singers. DooWops were considered on their way out....but I had enjoyed these kinds of sounds all my life. I still do.
Thank you so much for posting this original version of "I Do" that I had first heard from the J Giles Band. I was surprised to find that they performed a remake that is very similar to the original down to the "Doo Wop" sound. I had never heard this version before and I am a (late) baby boomer, thank you again,
Your Grand Daddy Rocks ! I don't understand why its so hard to find his Version anywhere. J Geils Band is the easiest by far to find. I like you Grandpa's better !
Ahhhhh, takes me back to Wednesday June 23, 1965, Williams Grove Park and Speedway near Dillsburg, PA - WSBA day. There were the Marvelows, Randy and the Rainbows, the Strangeloves, the American Beatles, Eddie Rambeau, and several others. Damn, I wish I had a video of that concert.
@doowopper1951 Wow, you were in the mix. Sounds like an exciting time. I came of age in 1965 and I know the climate at that time. It was a thrilling time to come of age! : )
Boy does this bring back memories, I was only in the ninth grade when it came out and it was such an uplifting song. Everytime I hear it I just go batty, I want get up and just shake my head from side to side and sing-a-long. Who in his or her right mind wouldn't as well. It's got so much spunk and you just want to yell it out and snap your fingers. Believe me it doesn't get any better than this, it'll take away your blues and that 's a fact Jack!!

I had no idea who did the original. I'm only familiar with the J. Geils band version, which is actually pretty similar to this.
