This is a really fun piece to play once you get it down. However the road getting to that point is like going through hell! This piece has so many shifting and it's one of the fastest pieces iv'e ever played in my life. But it is truly a masterpiece of musical literature!

Yeah, It's played at the speed it's supposed to be played at (if anything, maybe 2-4 beats/minute fast). You can tell when this song is overly fast when it feels "in one".

Very good tempo. The cantabile theme needs this tempo (slower than "usual"). In Russian tradition they usually play it way too fast. Which is an example that national traditions are not always good ones...

Sehr gutes Tempo! Langsamer als "üblich", aber schnell genug! Das Hauptthema hat Schwung, und das Seitenthema kann atmen. Das ist endlich mal Musik und nicht bloss heruntergeratterte Töne. Das traditionelle russische Tempo ist einfach zu schnell.

More than likely, you were playing the popular arranged version, which isn't full orchestra. I also had to play it as a freshman. The tempo is a pain at first, but it's easy to catch on soon after.
