  • bring it back!

  • This frightened me as a child. Only now, as an adult, can I comfortably watch it.

  • classik theme!!!

  • i watch this show only for the intro

  • Samehere, grew up watching this show. It was great

  • what makes that lady with the rag so scary?! IVE BEEN TERRIFIED OF HER FOR AGES :(

  • my mom liked this show a lot. As a child, i only liked the intro lol :)

  • This cartoon knda reminds me of the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland for some odd reason

  • I love the dog at the start.

  • Edward Gorey is da man. Didn't know who drew those opening credits when i was a little kid watching 'Poiroit' w/my grandma, but it went towards making me the total weirdo I am today :)

  • @amandalectron Same here dude! Nobody has the same style that Edward Gorey does. He's my favorite poet.

  • haha, I was never scared of this intro... it fascinated me. I'd hear it playing and get out of bed to watch it, then go back to bed afterwards.

  • This is one of the most sublime peices of animation I have ever seen. i loved it then and I love it now.

  • Oh my goodness, I remember my mum watching this when I was young! Every now and then I'd think of it, but I'd never be able to remember where it came from. Thank you so much for posting it! :)

  • I like how everyone remembers being terrified by this as a child; I always loved it.

  • TomD087 that was always my favorite part!

  • Yes the roof falling and the wailing woman on top of it were scary, but the worst for me was the lady at the ball with the bat headdress. When I was five I never noticed her touching her nose, all I could look at was her fan magically changing images...

  • I feel old at 21 saying "I remember when..." and "bring back the old intro you..." the new intro just is a shadow of the older ones former glory. It's sad

  • @jamschnitter It's just a flipping book. I am five kinds of disappoint.

  • this rally brings back memories...i would get bored watching the commercials and waiting for cyberchase, but whenever this came on i would be GLUED.

  • Ahhh awesome! I remember my mom watching this when I was small and I loved watching the intro. Then I left the room cause the shows were boring and not cartoon.

  • this show, along with masterpiece theater and law and order, was the staple of spending time at grandmas house as a child. today in class i was trying to remember what show had that lady moaning on the roof with a blue scarf....and shazam, i come to youtube and do a little digging and it's here. i think the biggest MYSTERY is why they were playing croquet in the rain.

  • Holy nostalgia.

  • I love Bat Hat woman!

  • Mystery! was such a fun show to watch while I was growing up. It used to come on every Thursday night and the Edward Gorey animation just set the right atmospheric tone to start the show. Thanks very much for posting this and bringing back some fond memories.

  • This is part of my childhood! Thank you!

  • I wish Gorey was still alive!

  • Loved this as a child. I miss Edward Gorey...

  • Your info of "sitting by our mom's ankles..." is spot on! :D I always loved seeing the Mystery! intro and am so glad to have found it here on youtube. Thank you so much for uploading it!! :D

    Cheers!

  • Thank you for this post! I use to stay up just to watch this into and than they changed it! Now I can watch it anytime I want!

  • What happened to Mystery...i cant find it on tv anymore hardly? can anyone help me out here!!! im obsessed with this theme and that dumb silly women who can't get up on top that building. Lol

  • i love this one but the new one they just made is crap !!!!!!! stupid people!!!

  • i love this intro but now the switched it to something "new" i hate it the new one is crap!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this intro! Brings back lots of good memories!

  • Anybody else notice the little cameos by some of his characters in the animation (namely the bicycle bandit)?

  • LoL i remember sitting with my parents and watching this when i was a kid; i always used to imitate the lady with the rag while laying on our couch :)

  • 0:25 Not it ;)

  • I've been searching for this for so long!!! definitely a fine memory from my childhood. thanks so much!

  • i used to watch this with my parents when i was 5 years old brings back nice memories

  • Edward Gorey is the best.

  • brings back such a wonderful feeling. i've been a gorey fan for a few years so when i made the connection and confirmed that this was his animation i felt very happy knowing that i was a fan of his work before i even knew i was. i agree with a lot of these posts. i usually ended up changing the channel once the opening was over.

  • I remember watching the first bit of the show just to see the opening! I didn't really want to watch the mystery, but I loved watching the animation style.

  • Does anybody know who wrote the music that is used in this intro?

  • Seems like all us 90's kids loved this intro when we were little! It kicks so much ass! Ahh the memories, you can still watch this show Thursdays on WTTW PRIME, and before it is Antiques Roadshow!

  • Does anyone remember when they'd have a 3 minute mystery drawn in the same Gorey style at the end of each episode? That's what I came here looking for, but it's still great to see the credits again!

  • I vaguely remember this, but i do! which is just awesome.

  • ha ha!!! i loved this so much when I was little. I would fight my parents to watch the intro. I didn't actually like the show i just liked the intro :)

  • @XxGemQueenxX Same! I would leave the room once the intro was done. I rarely watched the actual show.

  • As a kid I used to watch this every Sunday night @ 10:PM on PBS. Great way to end the weekend.

  • I watched Mystery with my Mom all the time...she's always loved it. Now she watches her favorite ones here on YouTube :)

Thanks for posting!!! Love this intro!!

  • Childhood memories

  • ha for some reason i was always scared of this as a kid

  • Don't worry, I was too when I was a little kid.

  • Love this!!!!

  • Aww man this really takes me back...love it when the lady on top of the building falling out...hillarious!!!!!!

  • I never liked this opening...bring back the openings with Vincent Price in it

  • I love Mystery, Edward Gorey, and Agatha Christie. :)

  • ...this takes me back...

  • Yes, Thanks so much. I've been looking for this!!

  • You jerks at PBS bring back this intro,

  • @thegreatactor Seriously!

  • @thegreatactor You bet. This was the best intro!

  • edward gorey is a genius

  • My favorites were always the "Sherlock Holmes" mysteries with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes

  • Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown,

Miss Marple, Lord Peter Wimsley, and all the rest,

    plus that classic Gorey animation,

God I wish someone at PBS would put out a multi volume Mystery DVD set

    covering the entire series.

  • I loved when they would show the Miss Marple seiries on Mystery! They were great!

  • LOOOOOOOVE!!!!

  • YES!!! i loved those times!!

  • My mom watched this show. I would sit by her and got kinda creeped out by it. You know, when that lady is like crying at 0:33

  • ahhh i miss this show, thanks for the post!

  • i forgot that there was even a show on after this theme! i was really only about 5 or 6 when it was on tv often, so it both intrigued and scared me....but now i just love edward gorey :-D

  • Aw, dude. I remember this from when I was like 5 years old. It scared the shit outta me. That lady on the roof with the rag was the worst part ever.

  • Exactly. Freaked my little ass out!

  • @TomD087

lol Me too! But at the same time I was thinking about how fucking awesome this intro it.

And wow, I'm 21 years old (and a graphic designer) and this is STILL the coolest animated intro to me.

  • @TomD087 lmao. the worst part for me was that cloaked guy in the balcony.

  • @TomD087 The falling piece of building was the worst part for me!

  • @TomD087 ...not a rag, but a wrap or ladies hanky. Yeah, she was kinda over the top, but creepy too.

  • It was me and my dad, and we were very particular - we only watched the Poirot episodes.

  • I used to watch this show with my grandma. We're both into mysteries, and we'd be sitting in her cozy room watching this and the intro used to just absolutely terrify me, hahaha.

  • I love this. It's so evocative and macabre (great music, too). I could definitely see how it might give a kid nightmares, but I loved it to pieces back in the day, even though I couldn't have been more than ten or eleven at the time.

  • Man....This was apart of my early childhood...what I find funny is that, apparently, alot of mothers watched this show, and we all were the kids watching with them! LOL

And yes, it would creep me out too... :P

  • i dont no what this is but it was very very intriguing(dont think i spelled the correctly) my teacher told me about edward gorey MS.hanes greatest teacher ever

  • " Remember when we sat by our moms' ankles and hummed along to this tune? "

YES, i do!! haha precisely that image. i always loved the animated intro of "Mystery!" and couldn't for the life of me figure out why the part after it was so dull, with real people and all. i wish i were 7 years old again =)

  • what ever happend to this anyways?

  • I used to love watching this when i was small

  • I remember this! But for a long time I couldn't remember what it was from.

All I remember was an animated opening to a TV show. I loved that opening when I was a kid.

  • I always loved this so much. Once I learned about Edward Gorey and saw some of his stuff, I was like, "Hold on! Did he do the Mystery opening???"

  • do you know what the music is called and who played it? thanks

  • I remember waiting for this show to come on all week long. They had the best stories and actors. Thanks for posting.

  • oh god this used to scare the crap out of me for some reason. I couldn't let my feet touch the ground when I watched it. I would have twisted nightmares about it. spooky shit.

  • Awesome. I always <3d this opening prt!!!!!

  • this was our fave show intro ever. growing up, our mom would nearly call out the guards when it came on.

giles is her overall fave but gorey's mine.

  • I love this but it's been colorzed!! It's still awesome!!

Tell me where I can find this as a ringtone!

  • Miss Marple *Clap* *Clap* *Clap*

  • i always had to go to sleep after the opening animation, and i was ok with that.

  • me too! haha!

Thanks for sharing this, Angelica :)

  • who has the theme song as a download?

  • I know exactly what you mean. Mystery! was a major part of my life from about the age of six. It was this and Masterpiece Theater. I think I can honestly say that PBS made me the person I am today.

  • I completely agree. I went to work in public broadcasting as a journalist and radio host ecause of PBS and NPR. I think I'd be a very different person if I'd been raised on the Dukes of Hazard and Rush Limbaugh.

  • oh masterpiece theatre! this and that too

  • how many versions of the mystery! intro are there??

  • oh gee..i remember this from when i was just a little kid and i would watch it with my mom!

  • Me too!

  • same here! i have always had memories of watching this with my family and hearing this song and never knew where it came from!

  • Oh my gosh. Oh, how I love this show. Edward Gorey is the man.

  • I always wondered why those people were playing croquet in a lightning storm.

  • ok.. youtube officially has everything. i remember seeing this on channel 9 when i was little.. randomly thought of it today.. and TaDa..here it is. i'm impressed.

  • Yay!!! I contributed to youtube having everything!!! Hurrah!!

  • I remember Arthur did a spoof of this, I thought it was REALLY cool!

  • although im more older i couldnt help but watch the arthur segment today so i was like "oh shit i remember that!" so i looked it up and damn it was here. but no lie when i was younger i only watch the opening then i changed to a different channel ~.~

  • I love this! Is it from a TV show?

  • I wish someone would upload the Arthur version of this! Id love to see that!

  • You saw that too!!! I love you man hahahahahaha!!

  • I remembered this for so long!!! But until recently I thought I had dreamed it up as a kid. All I could remember was the lady with the scarf lol. Then I was watching Arthur and they did a slight spoof of it during one of Fern's detective episodes and I recognized the lady lol. This brings back memories of sitting in the dark and getting creeped out by the music and animation. XD Thank you for uploading this!!

  • haha yeah same here for some odd raeson ive always remembered the lady with the scarf... and now i know im not crazy!

  • WOW!! I love Edward Gorey abd everything he does. This clip also brings back many memories for me when my mom used to watch this show when I was young. Thank you for sharing this with all of us.

  • was this a show based on edward gorey books or did he have direct affiliation with it?

  • I'm so deliriously happy you posted this! I'd been looking for this for a long time, but for some strange reason, I never found it on YouTube. Tonight, after I watched it on TV like most Sundays, I decided to try once more. And voila!

Thank you SO much for sharing! Love you!

  • I love this! I remember seeing a simliar clip that my parents were watching when I was little where a building started to crumble down as town's people looked on. Does anyone know what that was?

  • omg this brings back memories

  • OMG i love it so much I'm so happy

  • i would sit at the top of the stairs past my bedtime on monday nights while my mother watched this and it is stuck in myhead forever. way before i cam to love gorey. so glad others feel the same way

  • omg, I can't believe I found this. I was soooo young but yet I still remember it, especially the wailing woman. It just sticks with you. O.o thanks!

  • it really does stay with you!

  • i know! xD weird.

  • Oh I love this! Thanks for posting!

  • My mother used to do an uncanny impression of the swooning woman on the parapet -- it never failed to raise goosebumps.

  • I always wondered what this was... It used to freak me out when I was little, especially the wailing woman. Cheers for posting it!!

  • as a kid i always loved this opening sequence

it still holds up as super cool!

  • I love this!!! I tried to tape it once off the TV and then I lost the tape... ^^;

It's neat I can come here and watch it whenever. ^__^

I LOVE Edward Gorey stuff!!! But I loved this before I came to know who he was. ^^

  • They parodied this on an episode of "Arthur," down to the music. The skeleton statue at the beginning was of Mr. Haney, and I think Muffy was that wailing woman on the roof, and it ended with Fern dressed as Sherlock Hemlock.

  • yes! i remember that!

  • Great animation. I love that style..

  • then you would like Edward Gorey's illustations. he did the drawings for this opening.

  • Wow! Thanks so much for posting this - I have been looking for it for absolutely forever! :)

  • Anyone know where I could download the audio?

  • Ahhhh I used to love this intro as a kid!!! I made a couple drawings of like crime scenes after seeing these. Namely, I made one of a guy in a library/study with the cops all around looking for clues. I still love this intro, it's just so macabre and cool looking.

  • omg i love this intro! definitely better than masterpiece theatres'. i think we can all agree that the wailing woman in blue is the most vivid image, but i like the winking skull on the tombstone.

  • "That "mysterious guy" should've been a detective, I think." Hee. Word!

  • The mysterius guy? The guy in the window that vanishes? I have seen a couple people post that. Like what do you guys mean? The dude with the pencil who starts writing stuff down should have poked his head in? haha

  • Aw, I love this opening! Sometimes I turn on "Mystery!" just to see this part.

  • Wow! I'm so happy this is on here. My favorite part has always been the lady in blue wailing and fainting, for some reason. :-)

  • I remember my grandmother would alway be watching this... I never got into it because, being little more that 5 at the time, I thought it too sophisticated for me, lol

  • I always loved the bat hat woman!

  • I see that they have added the current Viewers Like You tag: Mystery is made possible by contributions to your PBS stations from Viewers Like You. Thank You.

  • DANG! i remember this from when i was a kid, but i never put two and two together! i didn't know until now that was edward gorey's work.

  • Beautiful. RIP Edward Gorey

  • LOVE this! Thank you!

  • It's good, but it's changed a bit over time. The one I best remember included a part where a gunshot was heard, and then all you would see were two feet sinking into a pond while a mysterious guy stands by it writing something in a notepad.

Other than that, I think it's the same.

    Someone post that one!!!!

  • Someone posted it.

It's actually completely different from this one.

  • You're right, there were different versions. That "mysterious guy" should've been a detective, I think.

The blue woman really sticks out. I like the crazy costume on the woman with the equally awesome chameleon fan in the ballroom, though :)

  • My mom used to watch this show all the time. The only thing I ever remember about the opening is the woman in the blue dress on the rooftop.

  • This is one of my favorite memories of childhood. Love this! Perfect in every way.

  • THANK YOU!! I only tune in to watch Mystery just for the Gorey intro which I ALWAYS miss. It brings me back childhood memories too. Funny how I prefered it over Disney.

  • I've always loved the animation. Was very happy to find it posted. Thanks.

  • I love this theme

  • I think they still use this same intro, don't they?

  • AAAAH! I loooove this! Thanks so much for posting it! I always stayed by the t.v. when it was on to watch only the intro because it makes me happy! [Still do...] ^_^ Thanks again!

  • Good shit.

  • Thank you so much for posting this intro! I have have been looking for it for quite some time now, and my girlfriend found it for me last night, just shortly after it was uploaded, apparently. What a pleasant surprise! And yes, it does bring back fond childhood memories. =)
