Edward Gorey is da man. Didn't know who drew those opening credits when i was a little kid watching 'Poiroit' w/my grandma, but it went towards making me the total weirdo I am today :)
Oh my goodness, I remember my mum watching this when I was young! Every now and then I'd think of it, but I'd never be able to remember where it came from. Thank you so much for posting it! :)
Yes the roof falling and the wailing woman on top of it were scary, but the worst for me was the lady at the ball with the bat headdress. When I was five I never noticed her touching her nose, all I could look at was her fan magically changing images...
I was too young to understand the show so I'd only watch this intro. I loved it. It has so much character and feel. Makes me wanna snuggle up to this show in the middle of a rain storm.
I feel old at 21 saying "I remember when..." and "bring back the old intro you..." the new intro just is a shadow of the older ones former glory. It's sad
Ahhh awesome! I remember my mom watching this when I was small and I loved watching the intro. Then I left the room cause the shows were boring and not cartoon.
this show, along with masterpiece theater and law and order, was the staple of spending time at grandmas house as a child. today in class i was trying to remember what show had that lady moaning on the roof with a blue scarf....and shazam, i come to youtube and do a little digging and it's here. i think the biggest MYSTERY is why they were playing croquet in the rain.
Mystery! was such a fun show to watch while I was growing up. It used to come on every Thursday night and the Edward Gorey animation just set the right atmospheric tone to start the show. Thanks very much for posting this and bringing back some fond memories.
Your info of "sitting by our mom's ankles..." is spot on! :D I always loved seeing the Mystery! intro and am so glad to have found it here on youtube. Thank you so much for uploading it!! :D
What happened to Mystery...i cant find it on tv anymore hardly? can anyone help me out here!!! im obsessed with this theme and that dumb silly women who can't get up on top that building. Lol
LoL i remember sitting with my parents and watching this when i was a kid; i always used to imitate the lady with the rag while laying on our couch :)
brings back such a wonderful feeling. i've been a gorey fan for a few years so when i made the connection and confirmed that this was his animation i felt very happy knowing that i was a fan of his work before i even knew i was. i agree with a lot of these posts. i usually ended up changing the channel once the opening was over.
I remember watching the first bit of the show just to see the opening! I didn't really want to watch the mystery, but I loved watching the animation style.
Seems like all us 90's kids loved this intro when we were little! It kicks so much ass! Ahh the memories, you can still watch this show Thursdays on WTTW PRIME, and before it is Antiques Roadshow!
Does anyone remember when they'd have a 3 minute mystery drawn in the same Gorey style at the end of each episode? That's what I came here looking for, but it's still great to see the credits again!
ha ha!!! i loved this so much when I was little. I would fight my parents to watch the intro. I didn't actually like the show i just liked the intro :)
i forgot that there was even a show on after this theme! i was really only about 5 or 6 when it was on tv often, so it both intrigued and scared me....but now i just love edward gorey :-D
I used to watch this show with my grandma. We're both into mysteries, and we'd be sitting in her cozy room watching this and the intro used to just absolutely terrify me, hahaha.
I love this. It's so evocative and macabre (great music, too). I could definitely see how it might give a kid nightmares, but I loved it to pieces back in the day, even though I couldn't have been more than ten or eleven at the time.
Man....This was apart of my early childhood...what I find funny is that, apparently, alot of mothers watched this show, and we all were the kids watching with them! LOL

oh god this used to scare the crap out of me for some reason. I couldn't let my feet touch the ground when I watched it. I would have twisted nightmares about it. spooky shit.
I know exactly what you mean. Mystery! was a major part of my life from about the age of six. It was this and Masterpiece Theater. I think I can honestly say that PBS made me the person I am today.

This brings back memories of sitting in the dark and getting creeped out by the music and animation. XD Thank you for uploading this!!

Thank you so much for posting this intro! I have have been looking for it for quite some time now, and my girlfriend found it for me last night, just shortly after it was uploaded, apparently. What a pleasant surprise! And yes, it does bring back fond childhood memories. =)

THANK YOU!! I only tune in to watch Mystery just for the Gorey intro which I ALWAYS miss. It brings me back childhood memories too. Funny how I prefered it over Disney.

Thank you so much for posting this intro! I have have been looking for it for quite some time now, and my girlfriend found it for me last night, just shortly after it was uploaded, apparently. What a pleasant surprise! And yes, it does bring back fond childhood memories. =)
