It's the same as when a group first debuts and they don't have a lot of exposure. Hyori, Rain, 1TYM, GOD, etc etc, were the starters of the hallyu wave. Without them, no one outside of Korea knows about kpop. But then when kpop is made famous, the group that just debuts gains fame.

In other words, groups like Big Bang or SuJu simply were at the right place at the right time. Everyone knows Rain, he's a legend, but a lot of people don't know how he got there.
