Enjoyed this video a lot, great upbeat vibe...love Richard and like his solo, too....small niggle for me, personal thing tho' from my own bands...can't stand seeing bass players reading the music from a stand onstage.......jazz, theatre, classical...yes...basic rock...no......I guess it just reminds me of a player I had in my mind who couldn't be bothered to learn the stuff......Thompson's bassist was good in this...but if he was a full time member...I would expect a different scenario.
@skaboosh The reason the bass player is reading the music is he is not Richard Thompsons bass player. The band is Dave's regular band. Will Lee on bass, Anton Fig on drums, Sid Mcginnis on guitar and Paul. These guys play with a different musician every night.
@stivboston yep, I realised that must be the case, and a great job he did too.....Will is good and was enthusiastic....
just reminded me of a painful Personal memory of a well known bassist I had in my band who didn't learn the stuff, took the pee at every opportunity, was as awkward as he could be and then shat himself at the gig...hehe...he should have just said, sorry mate, didn't wanna be in this band after all.......but he had to go the long and painful route...
I love the first comment....all of us should be so lucky as to someday be known as some wonderful person's (Teddy Thompson) parent Richard and Linda have given the world many fine gifts Fairport Convenbtion among them.
The keyboard player should have his thumbs pulled off....and the rhythm guitarist whilst we're at it; is this is what’s known as the Berkeley school of musicianship? It’s just naff.
@blackmonkey849 lol! Awesome....all I need now is to hear him say "THe LIBERAL media would have YOU believe this is in E FLAT! But anyone with INTELLIGENCE outside of this Administration will TELL you its G#. (cue tears)"
Man this song is awesome. Action Packed really opened me up to each stage of his solo career. Recommend it highly. Oh and its a wonder that horrible dancing behind him didn't make him laugh out terribly!
I never thought of that...and I'm a fan of both! Byrne and Thompson..LOL! Actually, Thompson first...but yeah...I had only heard Thompson's folk stuff..But I knew about Byrne first...and that makes no sense...lol
hey knobbyz ,you may be right but i reckonthe keyboard bloke has had a fuckin viagra !!! look at his face as he pounds away at those dirty keys >>you know they just asked for it !!
Please allow me to apologize - I was referring to Will Lee, the bass player, not RT. I've never, ever, thought that RT was on any kind of drug at a performance, and I've seen him many times, and have the highest regard for him.
Apologies are due to Will Lee also, but I have to say, when I see a musician jumping around upstaging the front man and chewing gum, I make assumptions - which comes from what I've observed from 40 years of playing with musicians You see it a lot on these old videos.
Don't think Thompson was using drugs at this time. He converted to Sufi Islam in the seventies and remains committed to his religious beliefs to the present day. Not all musicians are on drugs.
Actually, looking at this clip,it proves the opposite. All musicians are on drugs.and All the musicians in this clip are on drugs, but the drug is called adrenaline!.
Without it,they would simply stand there and look like idiots.Without getting ridiculously mystical, they are simply hyped up, and trying to do there best at a big gig.A totaly human and non narcotic reaction.
Neohip said "All musicians are on drugs.and All the musicians in this clip are on drugs, but the drug is called adrenaline!." When the body produces a substance like adrenaline, it is considered a hormone, not a drug. Nothing wrong with feelin' good naturally, in fact it's natural.
@MISTERWHITE111 That's really funny cause I was just about to do the same thing. Too bad the shot of Will lee is so distracting from the great performance of RT.
@MISTERWHITE111 Get a sense of humor, it's so ridiculously nineties it's hilarious. Maybe YOU should grow up, and stop being a fucktastic pretentious douchebag?
Will Lee was WAY over the top on this one. In his defense I would say that he appeared to be enjoying the experience of playing w/ RT. The whole band were clearly digging it. RT's own bands tend to be more quietly intense, never showy. But then, this is Dave's show, Dave's band and they probably figure they can show off as much as they like.
Paul didn't look like a jerk, Sid rocks with class, and Anton was rock solid and not a showoff.
I had three of his albums from around that time - Daring Adventures, Insomnia, Rumour And Sigh - they were all great records. I don't know why, but I lost interest in Thompson's music after that. I still listen to them, though.
The second album you mentioned is called "Amnesia".
Listen to "Sweet Warrior". You'll pick up right where you left off. While other rockers his age are getting fat and doing nostalgia tours, RT is still cranking out one great record after another. His creativity and musicianship are as brilliant as ever. If anything RT has improved with age.
The live version - I've heard in person, on this video, and on Fresh Air - is just vastly superior to the album track. Even with the 80's synth line. RT should go back into the studio and re-record some of the songs his producers have blown over the years.
My opinion -- the letterman ban, as great as they are, ruin this soul of this song. It's way better when he does it alone. And the little bad 80's synth line Paul does, Richard can do by accompanying himself on the acoustic.
Holy damn is this good.
