This scene always somehow reminds me of law school. The only salient difference is that law students haven't the fortitude to rise in revolt ("LAW NO MORE!!). They probably think about it, but they'd never do it.
Immortalized by Van Halen in their song of the same name. Their original version circa 1976 (pre record deal) directly referenced this film. The song was lyrically rewritten years later with a sexual theme theme and finally released on the 1984 album. David Lee Roth's original lyrics opined 'This forest stinks of night, by the light of day.'
This is exactly what's going to happen to American civilization when the cross-eyed, radical right-win rednecks are called out of their hovels by Fox News.
I wouldn't necessarily say supporting roles is where Bela was at his best, but as Ygor, and this critter here it louses up the image that he was a prima dona who totally loathed character make-up.
It also showed he was more than just his Dracula incarnation.
Anyone read the book from which this was made,The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells? So different from each other...for example, there was no Lota in the book, Moreau didn't die that way, etc. but still a good movie.
I watched this on the big screen in Hollywood. I was struck by its obvious influence on Romero's zombie movies. This is a wonderful movie. It is only too bad that Lugosi's role is terribly small, but when he does appear it is amazing.
kriitikko , nevermind. wikipedia said it was bannded in the UK in 1933, 1951 and 1957, probably beacuse of cruelty to animals. only passed in 1958, with an X certificate. similar thing happened to Freaks...
It's no wonder this film was banned, it's much more gory than typical early 1930's horror film. It also overshadows the two later versions of "The Island of Dr. Moreau".
He was quite good in Son of Frankensten as well. I think he did his best work when in supportng roles... I have a few ideas about why that may have been so. For example, he may have had better scripts in those films... simply a matter of superior productions
I also think that Lugosi and Karloff really had a chemistry when they performed in films together especially when each man would play different but memorable opposing characters who had their own distinct goals and motivations such as in The Black Cat
Come see/hear HORROR ACTOR PETER IASILLO as the voice of Mungo, The Sayer of the Law and The Captain in the RADIOTHEATRE HG WELLS FESTIVAL in New York City. Go to radiotheatrenyc dot com for ticket information. This movie is AWESOME!! ~ Peter Iasillo
This story, written by H.G.Wells, was produced in 1934 when the Nazis were beginning their quest for the perfect man/master race. It's a cult movie for myself and my friends.
I think it came out on Laserdisk maybe 10 or 11 years ago along with 'Murders In The Rue Morgue'
as a double feature,
Are you sure you aren't thinking of that?
It was released in the U.K. on DVD some years back, I don't think it's ever been released in the U.S. on DVD, I could be wrong, I'm always checking amazon for any DVD release.
I've just bought at "eBay" three Bela Lugosi gems in one DVD: "Island Of Lost Souls", "Murders In The Rue Morgue" and "White Zombie", a compilation copyrighted in 2005 by Thistlehillmedia.

in recent years the horror genre's so out of concepts they remake anything and everything, classic or not. just the tired rubbish of the last decade and a 1/2's devolving hollywood of played-out homogenized no longer groundbreaking pro-mediocre material (usu. bad on most to every level/s, directing, writing, acting, design, costumes, music, soundeffects etc).
is lugosi the one protesting "you made us part-men part-things"? ron perlman as the hunchback salvatore in "the name of the rose" has a similar accent. i like the weird mix of slave revolt/zombie/werewolf images/ideas - though i never saw a scary werewolf. but the lines are classic, there's something about it. i want to see the whole thing (the original, not remake).
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's actors and actresses: Charles Laughton, Gracie Fields, Florence Desmond, Boris Karloff from The Mummy, Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier and many more.

Probably the law recited to the critters refered mostly to common law for Wells could be quite an anarchist by times.

Watching this movie I've often wondered if the Law being recited to the critters was a goof on the 10 Commandments.

Yeah whenever anyone says that Bela couldn't act or only think of Dracula and Ed Wood when it comes to Bela Lugosi I'll always point to
'The Island Of Lost Souls'
'The Black Cat'
and 'The Body Snatcher' to prove them wrong.

Dont forget his crying scene in "Murders in the Rue Morgue", or his wonderfully funny role in "Ninotchka".

Actually it came out in 1933,
This was a pre Hays code film that probably wouldn't have been released as it came out
especially with that unforgettable ending,
If it had been released in 1934 or later.
cha5 4 years ago
This is probably my favorite Bela film,
I like Dracula but I'll always remember him as 'The Sayer Of The Law'
"Little knives"
THAT scene and Bela's expression when he says that is right up there with the ending of Freaks as being unforgettable and stomach churning IMHO.
