@anonymousbl00dlust Eh, the JP version might have point glyphs, but the level was completed for this version (and thus the full layout of this level was used in the subsequent Sega CD version) meaning it was longer, along with improved AI on the Vortex which never made it stateside.
@anonymousbl00dlust Most Japanese games were easier then Western versions. Case in point try the PAL version of streets of rage 3. It's a myth Japanese games were harder. It was the opposite.
It's not really longer. The only difference was a different turn at the end. Also, I'd opt for checkpoints over drones that struggle to avoid your extremely quick sonar anyway (especially since it's so easy to spam). The thing that makes Welcome to the Machine so difficult is having to start over again. Though I have never played this Japanese version. I'd like to give it a go.
@SanshinOfStirling Agreed. The major thing that sucked about Welcome To The Machine was failing after any progress you made and having to go back to start. Especially painful when you got most of the way through it just to make one wrong turn.
does anyone think the developers were having a laugh when they made the last levels of ecco? "lets scare the shit outta them and make it nearly impossible! hahaha!"
1:42 I don't remember those glyphs in the American version. What are they used for in this stage? They better not be some kind of checkpoint it took me months to get through this level alone. Fight the vortex queen get eaten and go through this level again!
The JP version is technically harder than the original, due to the improved AI of the drones, and the extended layout. The glyphs are handy and should have been there in the first place but yeah, that's the only thing that technically could make it any easier due to the fact the level is so long.
@TehMecheon No way man, I bought Ecco and finished it before The Tides of Time, when I came about the New Machine I was terrified as I thought history would repeat itself, but there was no horror music, no fast moving screen, no two second thinking, and it ended quickly, just play them one after the other on an emulator and compare, I mean the drones don't matter if you spam sonar anyway.
This level was hard to beat, when I first got to this level it took me alot of tries to get through it, this Ecco was and still is the most challenging game of all time.
Oh yeah and I love the music to this too, it fits it so well =)
I remember this level used to give me so much trouble as a kid! Then when I got past it and into the Vortex Queen chamber and then just as quickly swallowed up and forced to do this level again... oh man. I was livid. But all those playthroughs of WtTM is the reason I find the level such a cakewalk now, it's ingrained into my head ;)
The Japanese version is strikingly harder, given the level is actually longer and the different drone AI. I still prefer the challenge it offers though.
Oh my God.. I played this game when I was a child.. I used to love it.. bah.. I still do.. you're not going to believe me but I could never made it (Welcome to the machine) and I still remember the password. Now I wanna play it again. xD
I believe you on this, this game was hard to beat, but if you want to get to this level then type in NNNNNNNN all the way to the end of the password screen, that should take you there =)
Actually actually, this song isn't even official. It's from a fan-made album called Split the Stream of Time. Claire Turner a.k.a. viper.fox of the Dark Sea BBS put it together in tribute to the soundtrack of the first two games for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive.
i never played this game but this music is fascinating me.
i just played ecco the dolphin defender of the future on ps2 and i loved it but now I'm trying to play this old ecco games with an emulator but it doesnt work :'(
Wow. Nice job, dude. I love Ecco the Dolphin, although I've never made it very far without passwords. It's kind of depressing to see how much more of the level there is... I've only ever made it to about 4:07, when the alien jumps you from behind.
could you imagine this stage in HD? as if it wasn't already scary enough... it'd give me even more nightmares than it already did as a child.

This is one of those levels, that as a 14 year old I was determined to beat... but now as a 31 year old, I would refuse to play it.

Japan would not like to fuck with this dolphin, they should make a fourth one called "Ecco The Dolphin Attack of Japan"

For the first time in history, the Japanese found a U.S. game to be "too hard".

@anonymousbl00dlust Isn't Novotrade that made Ecco European?
SanshinOfStirling 5 months ago
@SanshinOfStirling Ecco came out in English first. The Japanese adaptation came out a year later.
Callyfin 5 months ago
@Callyfin Novotrade was still a Hungarian company. I was just pointing out that it's not, as far as I know, an American game.

this version looks nicer.

They're checkpoints alright. The Japanese version is easier by far
Mega CD version has the same layout as this stage but without the glyphs and still keeping the green drones, rather than the bronze ones

Eh, glyphs still do hamper the sheer moral crusher of having to do everything you've done so far all over again
Course the faster Deep Sea drones in the next game make The New Machine a god damned hellstorm. Even smart drones pale to those bastards

@popimpi Pff spamming takes all the fun out of it :|
The drones that do the 3-hit take-away are annoying because of it. Trust me, I've done both Machines, check my channel if you don't believe me

Is the music in the Japanese version different from the United States and European versions? It sounds different.
Of course, the Sega CD version has the best music. I think so, anyway!
TeinCave 3 years ago
Yes, it is different. There is a link to the U.S. version at the right.

Actually this version sounds different because it's from a remake of the Ecco soundtrack, rather than being the original.
