Nationality is not an invention but a reality and a need for nations to live free and indepentent. Before that, people of different nations and religions were subjects of empires and emperors.
I red the good book by Mazower. The picture of Ottoman Thessaloniki that he describes is not ideal world to me - except if you were a rich Jew or Turk.
@geochristof yea free and independent at the expense of all others..........now there are no rich anybodies there, just poor people and poor culture. Ottoman Thessaloniki's rich mosaic was under the Ottoman years.
You guys don't get it. Salonica was Macedonian, Roman, Turkish, Jewish (60% of its population before 1917), Bulgarian, Greek, you name it. Nationalities are a XIXth century invention! In one family one brother could choose to be counted as Bulgarian and another as Greek for arbitrary tax reasons. They all spoke 3, 4 languages!
Do me a favor: read the excellent "Salonica, city og ghosts", by Mark Mazower. Greek version available too.
lol, who told you that? for about 500 years, till 1840s, greeks always had lowest population in Thessaloniki, about same as gypsy population. Thessaloniki was jewish and muslim populated city since 15th century to 19th century. Then greeks expelled all of jews, muslims, gypys etc., everyone except orthodox christians out of Thessaloniki
Macedonia was never your house throughout history. Greece occupied it in 1913. It was the land of Macedonians and it belonged to the Turkey from 1370 to 1913.
You bombed the slavic speaking Macedonians with napalms in 1940s and assimilated the remaining people but this sill doesn't make it "your house", ok?

1. Solun (Selanik) is Macedonian, not greek, but still under greek occupation.
2. Greeks drove away all no greeks from there or the rest of Aegean Macedonia, including:
-Macedonians
-Turks
-Aromanians
-Gypsies
-Albanians
-Bulgarians
3. Anyhow, we shall have our revenge.
Greetings from Macedonia!
