  • All I took with me was my pick and place machine and reflow oven.

  • Wow, this is so geeky...I AM SO THERE

  • Events like this exist? Oh America, u so silleh.

  • Hey its Bre from Make!!!

  • they should call this event solder smoke:)

  • Can someone tell me why my soldering iron Tip is being eaten by corrosion ?

this is a cheap tip but i have to grind it to a fine point every 5week ...

  • Next time let us solder our own trophies xD

  • this is sweet

  • I'd rather join an NYC gangbang contest ... And oh with beer

  • i cant believe CNN didnt cover this!

  • Tom Kennedy - Dave Weckl's Bassist?

  • 2:12 uber cool

  • WHAT WAS THE TIME???

Damn i wish they gave the time on the winner! Id be awesome to get into one of these things. Even if you dont win it still pretty fun.

  • I think it took me about 7+ minutes. The next winner cam in at about 9+ minutes.

  • I love the way at the end he does not look at the trophy for what it is but is amazed by the casting of it, a true technician right there!

  • I WANT SOME OF THIS !

I heard someone say "speed solder." At DCTC, we call it drag soldering. Take a look at the video response above and let me know if speed like that with Class 3 quality for high reliability soldering would stir your interest.

Give us or EPTAC a call if you want professional training.

  • Man, I want to solder and make kits and stuff, but I am only 13 and I don't know my dad and my mum doesn't like doing that sort of stuff. And she won't buy me solder stuff and kits because she doen't want me to 'burn myself'. But I did a bit in a school class but, ...

  • Just go rogue, buy it yourself and tell mom to pipe down. When I was a kid I was actively encourage to learn how to solder by my great grandfather.

  • I think I am going to do that. Thank you again for the advice.

  • Tell her she's being overprotective and she needs to let you live your life, then chuck some other guilt-trippy stuff on for good measure.

  • Thank you soo much. Your advice is great!

  • Shes being over protective i started soldering when i was 8!

If youre not an total idiot you can solder. And by the sound of it you are most definitely NOT a total idiot. It sounds like youve got some smarts.

  • Ha ha. Well, I am not dumb. Thanks soo much.

  • nice idea with tv-b gone ^^

  • I just thought that some Americans thought that it was a silent 'L'.. which it might be in whichever area they're from. I'm from the UK and we have people down south that say barth and grahs instead of bath and grass. lol :P

  • I used to enjoy making all my solder into different sized solder balls and spiky shapes and stuff. My dad was in the army, so I suppose he was a solder too.

  • Will you Yanks PLEASE learn how to say "Solder" properly there's an L in there guys!

  • i agree, every time you hear an american say 'SOLDER' it comes out 'SODDER'

  • there's also a P in phone, but do we spell it Fhone?

  • Oops.. nearly the worst example possible—'ph' is a recurring phoneme throughout the English-speaking world.

Since it comes to us from ancient Greek, you could argue that 'ph', as an orthographic element, pre-dates the influence on written English, of the vast majority of other languages!

  • u knew what i meant, and he knew what i meant

  • the point is that 'ph' exists because 'something' happened.. historically, socially, whatever (any of the ways that language develops).

there may be such a reason why 'solder' is pronounced differently, but mikeselectric's point is that, if there isn't such a reason, and the 'L' is just being dropped, then it's sloppy—like friends of mine who just say '1, 2, free', because they never paid attention.

so, "it's said that way because it's said that way" is really a non-response.

  • i got my point across either way, so the fact that it wasn't an accurate example, doesn't make it a bad example..in the end i'm sure both of u knew what i meant nonetheless

  • woah, what the hell was the guy doing at 3:09?? i put this kit together and it definitely didnt look like that.

  • i think he just left the entire lead on the led's on. then cut the excess off after he's all done.

much easier than cutting the leads to length before soldering them onto the board.

  • umm near the end?

  • Right, because that's the only reason to do anything. Chicks.

No other motive exists in the world than reproduction.

    Dumbshit.

  • Weaksauce. You start soldering 01005's and then we'll talk.

  • What's nice about having only one tooth is that you don't need to floss, but what's even nicer about having no teeth is that you don't need to brush.

  • Try video "BarryStick".

  • Say to me that I am a sir and that I have a twisted mind! please!

  • Try my Vido.

  • I love the smell of solder in the morning -

  • Damn I actually missed this. I would have killed to be there.

  • I bow before your superior Geekness! We're not worthy! We're not worthy!

  • gahahaha

  • Inspiring. I could point out however, that there are probably millions of women around the world, working at assembly, lines who can solder better. Mind you, I also consider golf, tennis football and curling unwatchable. ;-)

  • Yes. But remember they're only doing it to feed and clothe children. It's just not as cool as being in a nice big group of self-celebrating hobbyists. This is what the trophy is actually for—it's the prize for acknowledged status within the social group.

Regular assembly-line workers, female or otherwise, are just boring. Offbeat dudes living the dream, working on hobbies in basements—now that's cool!

  • Hows about the Halo teabagging competition?

  • I find it strangely fascinating

  • I find it fascinatingly strange.

  • Hope they are using lead free solder...

  • lead free solder woudl be trash...

  • Wow, this would be something that I would love to show up at, I probably wouldn't compete because I've never soldered with the intention to get it done very fast, I usually check my joints to make sure they are in securely. Then again I put down the little donuts and connect the dots and copper-etch my boards a bunch of the time too. Fun hobby, I love playing with and building electronics.

  • Precision is key.

  • Thank you for making this known.

  • social nerd-ism at its finest.

  • How cool is this? Nice trophies,too...maybe next year the boys will add a diagnostic and rework challenge to the mix..hey,thanks for posting the video

  • It's a job at places but is it a real sport?.......LOL not in a long shot.

Did it even work? I can throw shit together but the question is does it work. LIL lame in my opinion!it's on the verg of speed eating as lameness

  • Yeah it worked. The rules were, the first to build the kit, and have it actually turn off the TV would be the winner. In the vid you can see the TV go off.

  • took this in skewl

  • nice!5/5

  • i really dug this.

  • first off i think you mean losers. Second without people like this you wouldnt be sitting on your ass all day bitching on a "COMPUTER" or getting raped on your "XOBOX" have some fucking respect for the type of people that gives your moronic ass these types of things. Dummy

  • WOW!

    2 women there.

    I was not expecting that.

  • they should lose some fats.

  • did they test it to make sure that it worked

  • That was the test. You had to be the first to kill the TV with your TVBgone.

  • good job speck

  • spec is the best solderer in the world. was there ever any doubt?!

  • Beats Star Trek! As an amature nerd (been a hippie most my life) this does look fun!

  • 2:43 "your in a bar sodering"

  • Funny.

  • this seem like a great day.

    i wish i was there.

  • Never before has there been an event like THIS!

This SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY, it's the New York City Soldering Championship! Come see the action! A gripping night of molten metal, clogged solder suckers, twisted cords, lifted pads, lead fumes and burned boards! Special feature: Speed Ground Pin Soldering - done with a 375 degree tip and NO FLUX!

Many will enter, only one will win. The rest will EAT FLUX!

    ~Sorry, could not resist.. I solder for a living!~

  • nice, very nice!

  • roflol Really cool.

  • Wow, you filmed this last night and edited it fast! I loved the shots you took of the folks during the competition. The air was tense in that room when all the soldering was going on!
