  • i have an 02 ss stock, minus a set of nitto drag slicks to hook up with. Got a 12.72. Those camaros were a lot faster than ppl gave em credit for. Bolt ons drop them easily into the 11s not bad for a street car that can get 25mpg and nets you plenty O puntang.

  • I'm a chevy guy, but there's no denying power. The new mustangs punch out some sick power for only being 5.0. The new camaros have the benefit of a 6.2. That's about 24% more displacement. But they're still pretty competitive against each other.

  • @Z28inNC Ive seen many dynos on ls1 engines in everything from vettes to 69 maros.ls1 with a manual will consistently put down over 300 some less some more.Stock SS ls1 camaro for instance with a good driver and slicks will turn high 12s all day and you cant do that with less than 300 to the wheels in a maro

  • Yep, use your brain. You are comparing a 2001 LS1 Corvette to a 1988 5.0 LX Mustang. In 1988, the 5.0 LX Mustang was pushing 225 horsepower and 275 foot pounds of torque. The vehicle itself weighed around 3400 pounds with a medium sized driver in it. Believe me, back then it would have ate a Monte Carlo with a weak 305 in it. The 5.0 302 wins over an 80's model 305 or 350, no bullshit. Plus, the 2009 Camaro came back only to take another dirt nap. Ha, they don't make 2003-2008 Camaro's, haha!

The 2009 Camaro SS might be a bang for the buck, but that Hennessey Camaro HPE550 is not so impressive. The HPE550 is 58K, look it up. The Fox Body doesn't cost a lot of money. Look it up, mid 10 second coupe with just a little nitrous on youtube, with around 4-6K in mods. The ZR1 is a beast, I am not against Chevy.

  • In case you haven't noticed, the camaro has been more expensive than the mustang since the 80s sure ford can put a bigger motor in the car but that means jacking the price up. Ford proved they could beat the LS1 with the 2000 cobra R and again with the 03 cobra.

  • Who ever mentioned price? Do you know how much the Cobra R costs? You can't compare it to an LS1 equiped Camaro! And not to mention the price tag on the 03-04 cobra off the lot! Sure chevy has been a liitle heavier on the price tag, but you can't compare them to the R or terminator(price wise). Again, no one was talking about price!

Drop the LS1, a arms, and 3 link and you're looking a cheaper and slower camaro. It is why the camaro died, Chevy thought they could sell with more power.

  • No they didn't, sales figures for the car droped rapidly, and so did production numbers, production numbers drop when you don't sell the car well. Chevy is doing bad, real bad, worse than Ford, they decided to make the ZR1 and the camaro because of the big bail out they got from the US Gov. Ford on the other hand in penny pinching as the 2010 mustang is pretty much a 2005 mustang with a different body and interior. Similar to what they did in 1994-1995.

  • I am not too wild about the 1993 to 2002 camaro style with the exception of the 1997-1998 RS hard top, and I hate the new camaro. The grill's isn't deep enough and the grill's style is all wrong, it looks like it's smiling at me like the Pixar's cars, the door mirrors suck, the tail lights suck and the wheel style sucks.

  • Not rly considering right from the start of the 4th gen camaro Chevy had to use the corvette motor. I find funny how Ford slaps some DOHC heads on that little 4.6L and 2 years later Chevy ditches the LT1 to put in the LS1 corvette motor.

  • They could have used the North Star engine? Anyways the LT1 was a lot better engine imo than the LS1. The block is strong, it can be stroked out, and the after market permits cylinder heads that flow as good as LS1 heads. Why? DOHC heads are proven to flow better, why do you think the 4.6 and even the North Star engine got so close in terms of HP to the LS1? The new one weighs close to 3500 the later SN95 were 3300-3400 depending on wether it was IRS or live axle.

  • It was made by GM, come on, they could have got away with it. No it doesn't. The only time a push rod has EVER out performed a DOHC engine is if it is bigger, much bigger, why do you think Nissan, Honda, Toyota, VW, Ferrari, Porsche, ect use DOHC heads? The DOHC design alows for better flow. Why do you think at 5.4L the DOHC modular makes 422HP the same as a 6.2L push rod? Push rods are a dated piece of technology, but they are cheap and that is why I think Chevy uses them.

    ok lets compare the 5.4 modular and the 5.7 ls1 the 5.4 is actually bigger then the 5.7.

    if the 5.4 were a pushrod it would be a 5.8 i know thats a reall bug difference lol but every litte point counts.

    btw the worlds fastest car uses a 6.3 pushrod twin turbo vs the 8.0 dohc quad turbo w16 veyron.

    also dragsters use a supercharged pushrod making 8000hp

  • No it isn't. It (5.4) has a longer stroke but an inferior bore. Displacement is done by bore, stroke, and number of cylinders. From a design stand point the 5.4L modular 3 valve is exactly the same as the 6.8L 3v triton, but the triton is a V10 which is what gives it its 1.4L bump. The ls1 has the proper bore and stroke for a 5.7 where the 5.4L is essentially a 4.6L stroked out with a higher deck hieght to support the stroke. Being a push rod or DOHC doesn't change displacement. I have more.

  • Well a car achieving a top speed such as that has alot more going into it than just engines. Transmissions, aerodynamics, gear ratio, I could go on, so you have to look at it from a stand point of which one makes more HP. This is hard to dicern, as both cars are boosted. How big is the turbo, how much boost, what is the compression ratio, ect. ect. NA, same CR, I am sure the veyron would produce more hp than the aero. So? There SOHC motors pushing the same power.

  • Chevy uses them, cause they can get more HP with better Gas mileage. Compare HP with gas mileage of chevy cars against any within the same HP and performance. It's not outdated technology if they can keep it and still outperform DOHC.

  • Chevy uses what? Push rods? DOHC if attempted can and does get better gas mileage than push rods or ohv. It is just that Ford doesn't pay much attention to fuel economy. And no, Chevy didn't out preform DOHC. The LS1 doesn't make as much HP as the 5.4L DOHC.

  • DOHC has never got better gas mileage cause it can't. V8 push rods get the gas mileage of dohc 6 cyl's. and the LS1 can make more HP than the 5.4 DOHC.

  • I am pretty sure the gas mileage of the new camrao's V6 (LLT) is better than that of the LS3, so much for, push rods get better MPG. No it can't. The LS1 only makes about 300 at the wheels, the cobra R made around 380 at the wheels.

  • No it didn't. When they put it on the dyno it dynoed around 380 at the wheels which means Ford lied about the crank HP rating of the car. Yeah and pigs fly, I have seen LS1 dyno and they have never gone past 309HP and the wheels STOCK.

  • Why not? The Camaros have always shared engines with the Corvette. 454, 327, 350. The always have. The LT1 was a product of the Corvette engine designs anyways. Ford uses the same engines in its Cobras and GT's. Who cares. Saves money and why not use the better engine.

  • You're missing the point. Cubes for cubes, chevy can't hang with Ford. Which is why they use corvette motors. Cobra is an upscale model of the GT, and the mustang actually uses the engine out of SEDANS not a sports car, BTW then why complain if Ford wants to use oh IDK a super charger? Maybe because when all the camaro saw off the 03 cobra was it's tail lights when for years it had been the other way around. But when chevy loses the 1st ones to cry foul are GM guys.

  • I didn't care about the S/C. I simply said why not use that engine. It is one of the best built engines ever. I have never seen another car put up HP numbers like the vette and get the gas mileage of it. Never. That is technology, and they did it with the push rod v8.

  • that is a 95 5.0 ltr with trick flow ported heads.trick flow intake, cold air kit, and some other minor work. guy wanted to race a stock ss and got his ass whipped. he then sold the car, bought a 06 z06 and we raced again. it was close. after all my mods he cant touch it
