  • Who gives a shit about the genre, the influences, the authenticity of their roots? They're just making some fucking music, and all that matters is that it sounds good and feels good.

  • FUN FACT: Battery Kinzie is a concrete Endicott Period Battery located on Fort Worden, Jefferson County, Washington. Named in G.O. 245, 13 Dec 1909, for Brigadier General David Hunter Kinzie, a U.S. Civil War veteran who died in 1904. The Battery was begun in Jun 1908, completed in 1910 and transfered to the Coastal Artillery for use 10 Jan 1912 at a total cost of $207,832.50. The guns were dismounted in 1944 toward the end of World War II.

  • This song has a Everly Brothers feel to it.

  • Please... just enjoy music, no matter what, no one cares if you like or dislike Mumford & Sons, I love both FF and M&S, but you don't care, because you shouldn't.

Moral of the story; Just enjoy whatever you freaking want to.

(Also this song is so crazy good I can barely believe it)

  • Why compare Mumf&Sons to Fleet Foxes? One is folk-bluegrass and the other is indie-folk. Both utterly amazing.

  • Brilliant tune...

  • Mumford & sons suck, this is way better

  • If you're going to compare Fleet Foxes with Mumford in sons, why not toss Goose Creek Symphony in the mix :)

  • i saw both bands at glastonbury this year, fleet foxes on before mumfords...as the fleets were going off the stage mumford said that they ''were the best band in the world..''.what an accolade..both were equally brilliant .M and sons got the crowd going were fleets more sedate, melodious.. and less manic...i couldnt chose between them and why should i, both are allowed to be fantastic,,imo

  • @baggiebev I was at Glasto and saw these two bands this year, too! Both were magnificent. Your assessment of the two is perfect -- Fleet Foxes is very chill, while Mumford & Sons are very energetic. Combined as they were, it was heaven.

Check this cover out, it's awesome. It's my friend's cover, and I'm absolutely amazed by his talent. Please go listen to it, you won't regret it. And no, I'm not doing this on his behalf :)

Check that cover out. My friend did it and I'm absolutely amazed with his talent. Please go check it out, and no I'm not doing this on his behalf. :)

  • @mshartz5: You realize jazz is largely based on african music, right?

  • @Steoandnoodles1

Hehe, sounds funny but literary is an adjective and lyrics are a noun, so it works...kind of.

literary: versed in or acquainted with literature; well-read.

  • i love this song

  • Pitchfork never lies. Mumford and Sons are shit.

  • @Renneskid

ahaha pitchfork never lies. they put rihanna on their top 100 songs every year

  • @yosoytacoseasoning just because rihannas not indie or alt or whatever doesnt mean she cant make good music. i think she makes decent pop music, a lot better than most on the radio so pitchfork has to set examples as to what mainstream pop music should be headed towards. for the most part, pfk is reliable. the only big mistake they did this year was give bon iver a 9.5 and this and destroyer an 8.8 when the numbers should be reevaluated

  • Mumford and Sons are known for their literary lyrics while Fleet Foxes are known for their harmony. If anything Mumford should be compared to DMB while Fleet Foxes compared to MMJ since they are more similar.

However, each band has their own style. The only bands that should be compared to one another is the crap on the radio since it literally all sounds the same.

  • @mshartz5 Who the hell is DMB? Do you mean Dave Matthews Band? I tried to listen to one of their songs but became violently ill. Is there another DMB out there I'm missing?

  • @RDBeatnik

Well music is subjective, so you can like it or not. I personally don't like their newer (2000+) stuff.

Either way, they are a very talented group combining sounds never heard before and have been doing so since '94. Who else mixes Jazz with Southern African sounds?

  • they did kind of remind me of mumford and sons at first but both bands are really different and shouldn't be compared. also, people can like both. i know i do.

  • this here is fleet foxes territory here we do not speak of the band-who-must-not-be-named.

  • I don't find them to be like Mumford and Sons at all- I love both bands, but they are very very different, and you could never really compare them.

  • saw these live at manchester on tuesday. OMG they were amazing best artist i have ever seen live. such beautiful music. i could listen to them forever.

  • who the fuck is mumford and sons..? Why are the top two comments about the same thing?

  • how could anyone comapre these guys to Mumford and Sons? these guys are much better and far more talented

  • regardless of the negativeness. Both bands are fantastic, however. Fleet Foxes came first. And thats how it is, no competition, just real talented bands doing their thing. Folk is the new Rock and Roll :-)

  • Fleet Foxes "Battery Kinzie" is featured on Indie/Rock Playlist April (2011)

    theindierockplaylistdotcom

  • This song is about Kinzie Kenner.

  • @danielibertine lmao, i dated her, i wish, but not really.

  • *have *have (embarrassing)

  • Fleet Foxes has an authentic, honest sound. Mumford and Sons has a synthetic, fake sound.

  • Mumford and Sons does not sound like a million hearts in sync, Mumford and Sons does not make me feel like I have been reborn, Mumford and Sons does not feel pure and natural and eternal and wonderful and vibrant like a tribe of Africans beating their drums and dancing and lauging. Fleet Foxes do. Full Stop.

  • @electrocuteanna What the hell are you talking about!?

  • @electrocuteanna Notice how you say how Fleet Foxes makes YOU feel? I mean, "full stop", really? Because some people may experience these things with M&Sons, or with any other artist. So.. Kind of a pointless argument, yeah?

  • @AntjaDec Nope, it's my opinion. Of course some people feel differently.

  • @AntjaDec

just commenting to say I agree with you. People seriously need to stop hating. They don't have to crush other people's enjoyment of music just because they don't like it!

  • Comment removed

  • sounds more like a modern simon and garfunkel

  • Fleet Foxes= comparable to Mumford and Sons. They are both blindingly beautiful.

  • Who the hell compares mumford and sons to fleet foxes. Mumford and sons does not even come anywhere close

  • I've listened to mumford and sons, and honestly don't like their music. I also don't see why Fleet Foxes are compared to this band all the time. They do not have the same sound.

  • @jamieswiltedboob

    The Proclaimers

  • This song is a heart-cracking, lung-raising burst of shining musical sun

  • "He kept you on lock and key,

he paid the wage you sent to me,

and waste the day so idly

    alone, all the way home."

    I love this song!

  • mumford and sons + fleet foxes = greatness :]

  • I am a proud fan of both Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons....deal with it world :D

  • I love this album, particularly The Shrine/ An Argument. I don't really see why people are getting so into this Fleet Foxes/ Mumford and Sons debate. I never thought of comparing the two. Why do they even have to be compared?

  • @mise91 Because they are both folk revivalist. Fleet Foxes is much better in my opinion though.

  • @dsf429 Neither of them are truly folk though. Their just young white kids who pick up acoustic instrument and sell this image of "Men in old fashioned clothes with beards" You can't revive a musical genre that never left in the first place. Folk has always been around, it's just never been popular since the 60's. Folk is about chronicling you times, not oblique lyrics that relate to the woods and stereotypical folk shit. FF are still a good act though, but their not folk, their folk influenced.

  • @dsf429 and I know I made a few grammar mistakes there. Sorry.

  • @mise91 Because people feel the need to start up debates about how they both have similar style of music. In my opinion, there is not really a need to compare, I think of bands with same style as completely different bands and feel.. Just listen to the band and enjoy the talent in the harmonies and how they make the music flow throughout the album. You can take what you want from a band and I think everybody seems to like that comparison

  • How did this become a discussion about who's better: Fleet Foxes or Mumford and Sons?

Who cares? This song is so perfect it makes me think those two people who clicked "unlike" got the wrong button by mistake.

  • I do like Mumford & Sons but Fleet Foxes definitely takes the cake on a better folk/"indie" band. Fleet Foxes seem more authentic.

  • I dont care what anyone says. I LOVE MUMFORD AND SONS AND FLEET FOXES!!!!!

  • i wish all music made me feel like this

  • Someone should do Morris Dancing to this

  • @Steoandnoodles1 Hey, it's fine with me if you don't like Mumford & Sons, but I don't like your narrow-mindedness. The world has become much smaller now, musicians are all influenced by the wide variety of music from all over the world. so it's quiet normal for artists to mix up the things they like. Again: music's not a competition, quit comparing and pidgeonholing. Tastes ARE relative. If you don't like M&S, don't listen to them so we don't have to hear you whine. On topic: this song is great!

  • @Fluppezot the music biZznizz is competitive!

  • Why the petty comparisons between Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons? It's not like you have to pick one; just enjoy them both.

  • @azatrox totally agree! i love both bands.

  • @azatrox I agree. both are superb bands. Art is not a talent contest it's about truth.

  • @azatrox Agreed, plus I find they each have their own sounds anyway.

  • @azatrox comparing two bands doesn't mean that you like one or the other!

  • mumford sons are nothing compared to fleet foxes

  • FROM what album is this song?

  • @bloomingdales5 Its from Fleet Foxes new album "Helplessness Blues" which comes out on May 3rd, 2011. Go and buy it, I know I am!

  • @bloomingdales5 helplessness blues

  • Robin Pecknold has reached theological proportions.

  • @Steoandnoodles1 Thanks for letting me know, I really miss the Jools Holland show, he always gets the best bands, I'll try and find it online somehow. Some great songs on the new album.

  • @Steoandnoodles1 British and singing with irish accents? You sir, made me lol

  • I cringe when I hear people degrade mainstream listeners. Being under the radar doesn't make you anymore hip. I'll rock KiD CuDi in my car, take a shower listening to The Strokes, and fall asleep listening to Fleet Foxes. You anymore hip than me?

  • @clone104d Ahhh very true. just because its mainstream doesnt mean its shit. gotta have some diversity in your music. im a fan of cudi, fleet foxes and everything in between

  • The sound is awful here -- it's mono, not stereo. I would take it down asap and replace it with a stereo version.

  • @Cruzman3609 You're totally right!

  • Mumford & Sons make bluegrass popular again and Fleet Foxes make folkrock popular again. 2 music genres from America's music history have been lifted into this century by these bands. They deserve the respect of all of you for doing that alone. Don't compare them, music isn't a competition. Tastes are relative.

  • Correction....

Mumford and sons = Fleet Foxes

  • Comment removed

  • @silverlake77 I don't see enough similarities between the two to say they "=" one another.

  • @silverlake77 mumford and sons suck horse cock...fleet foxes own them

  • I dig this a lot. But I kind of like it better when Robin does it solo :/

  • This is arguably the most beautiful recording ever made.

  • Comment removed

  • Fleet Foxes> mumford and sons

  • @daveanator goddamn it i accidentaly voted down :( but i've been telling people that for like 2 months now

  • @daveanator Mumford and Sons is a mainstream band that has some folky aspects. This is why it appeals to mainstream music listeners(i.e. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry fans) as well as alternative music listeners. I don't understand the appeal behind them, just sayin'.

  • @michaelpietrobon you can like more than one tpe of music. learn to respect other peoples art!

  • @lollypopbashhernow art? lol

  • @michaelpietrobon Music is considered to be a form of fine art.

  • @EnviousElk I know that. I was referring to pop "music". That is NOT art.

  • @michaelpietrobon I am sure there is a lot of music out there that was made strictly for the money, but I'd rather not slap that generalization on all pop musicians. A fair number of them, I find, make beautiful and emotionally powerful songs. Can we say that something isn't art if its creator thought of it as art? Needless to say, I'm relieved Fleet Foxes are not geared that way (or so Robin has stated) and that they make music for music's sake. One of many reasons why they rule so much. :)

  • @michaelpietrobon Whatever you say, master of all knowledge. That's what they said about Mozart and Van Gogh and so many others in their own time.

  • @maxf736 What is so good about pop music? Art is subjective only to a certain point.

  • @michaelpietrobon My point is that one can't, or rather shouldn't, completely disregard the value of something simply because of an arbitrary classification - like "pop art". Many who are now considered great artists or musicians were considered rubbish at first because they were before their time. There are surely gems hidden amongst the enormous library of pop music titles. History will ultimately decide.

  • @michaelpietrobon I'm with you all the way mate, Mumford and sons, even the fucking name is bullshit, it tricks people into thinking that they're some country folk living in their dads barn or something, probably never seen a field in their lives. Some people just dont have the ear for real music. Fucking Fleet Foxes are a real Fucking band. Cant stand them other phony cunts.

  • @deerstalkerm3 And another Justin Bieber fan reveals himself to the world for them to mock, hahahahahahaha!

  • @daveanator well, too bands far apart, and Foxes been around longer than Mumford. Time will tell, but, unfair to apply this contest on two bands I love. I will say, Elbow > Fleet Foxes, in every way. Lyrically, instrumentally, experimentally etc.

  • @daveanator

    nah

  • @daveanator I couldn't agree with you more. Mumford and Sons are a sad group of wanna-be Fleet Foxes.

  • @daveanator no competition there.

  • @daveanator Mumford and sons = possibly a fail band, picking up on the indie movement and trying to make it their own whilst embarrassing themselves.

  • @daveanator Apples > oranges ... Oh wait...

  • @daveanator mumford and sons = sh*t

  • @SumDarkEvilThing agreed

  • @daveanator Yeah no shit.

  • @daveanator both piss poor, but mumfords much much more bad

  • @daveanator

    They are both good

  • @daveanator Thats an odd comparison to make, they are both amazing in their own respects.

  • @daveanator yeah man, really, the first thought when i listened to this song. Its so similar when he is going high with his voice

  • I heard this song on KCRW's "This mornig becomes eclectic"...online. Check it out for some cool music if you wish...

  • It is cluttered but it's unique and I am grateful to hear it. Thanks!

  • they dropped the ball on this song IMHO. i was hoping the studio version would more closely resemble the 12 string solo version that ive seen on live videos of robin. this version sounds overdone and is like a wall of sound, too cluttered.

  • @chrisziggy100 but the harmonies!

  • @chrisziggy100 I agree. I don't think it's a bad song, but it feels too full to me. In some of there songs, "full" worked quite well, like in Blue Ridge Mountains or Helplessness Blues. Other songs work fantastically when they're stripped down though. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song and Innocent Son are very solo and they're wonderful. I agree that this would work better with just Robin and his guitar.

  • majestic wonderment

  • this album is gonna be amazing.

  • let me guess, you streamed zane lowes radio 1 show on your computer last night and recorded the section with this song included? lol

  • @MusiCountdown lol no I used soundflower and audacity to record it from soundcloud.

  • @michaelpietrobon can you upload the others? i'm illicit downloading illiterate

  • @itsourhai I've heard everything you've heard-sorry. I just downloaded this one song. The only songs they released from Helplessness Blues are the title track and this one. Sorry :(

  • @michaelpietrobon this will probably show up on npr's first listen, thats how bright eyes entire album ended up on youtube before it came out.

  • Very poor sound quality.

  • @edeneye808 shut up. its good enough

  • Comment removed

  • Holy shit I cannot wait for this album.

  • this is how bees make honey.

  • @shotguncure Haha, you're so right! This is really a how-bees-make-honey-song!
