Read the description, and I couldn't agree more with the Mendez bit. When I write songs for my band, I'm the same way. The bass is always doing something different off to the side, that fits with me guitar/drum parts. Excellent bass tone, and playing! Join my band? Haha post more Opeth stuff!
Do you ever adjust your tone settings? They say if it sounds bad unplugged, it'll sound no better plugged in. Just a word of advice if you ever bought another.
what sort of settings are you using? i use fingerstyle and i play in a technical-ish metal/prog band. since weve got a lot heavier im finding a little hard to get my tone to cut through and at some venues it ends up being very muddy (partly due to the sound guy).
Hey man - thanks for watching the video and for the comment. This tone is from a Line6 POD XT. The thing that gives it the crunch and punch is a slight bit of distortion. I think the setting mimics a Tech21 Sansamp. I think the (untraditionally metal) guitar helps come out a bit too. Try adding a bit of gain to your sound - see if that helps and if not tell them guitar players to turn down! Thanks again for watching. -Rob
@RobBobMusic or u can try blasting ur mid and putting ur treble at 8 to get some bite and if mud is a problem then cutting ur lows might help but only if u have a joke of an amp. if that doesnt work, then get a high wattage amp and large cab. but keep mids cuz mids=presence
This bass-line is absolutely epic! I never really listened to the bass in this song until I watched this video, and now when I hear it I can't help but air-bass to the song. My favourite line is the one that you play at 0:41.
Although I'm not a huge Opeth fan, I envy their bassist, their laid back prog-rock orriented feel leaves a lot more room for grooves and walkings than most metal bands. Nice vid
Hey dude, thanks for watching. Yeah, this song is in standard tuning. I think most of Opeth's tunes are in standard to be honest. Some are in drop D though - a few off Ghost Reveries for example. Thanks again for watching and the comment! -Rob
Atleast the guitar parts for all the songs on Ghost Reveries are in open Dm. Atonement is in standard though. Other than that, the vast majority of their songs are in standard tuning.
Hey dude. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I don't think there really is a fill during that time - its pretty much just the original bass line. I'm always interested in other people's opinions though so if it was another fill you meant or just don't like that line I'd be interested to hear more. Thanks again. -Rob
Hey dude. Thanks for checking out the video and the kind words - much appreciated. I've been playing bass since September 2000, but I had been playing other instruments for about 5 years prior to that. Thanks again man! -Rob

Not to crush your dreams or anything, but Mikael Akerfeldt, the singer and lead guitarist of Opeth, writes every single line of music for Opeth; guitar , drums, bass, everything. Occasionally parts will get modified if he feels that they merit changing but he writes everything...so you like Mikael's bass huh? Lol.
Yo dude, thanks for checking out the video. I honestly didn't know that about Mikael. I'm a big Opeth fan, so obviously I knew that he's the main guy and main songwriter, but didn't realise he would write the bass lines. If its true its very impressive seeing as he's not primarily a bass player. Not that I'm purposefully doubting you, but where did you get this information from? Is it from an interview that maybe you could link me to? I'd like to see it. Thanks again for watching. -Rob Bob
Mikael practically writes everything and then the band comes together and screws around until they all like how it sounds. Mikael was actually the bassist from the early formation of opeth. He auditioned as a bassist and then he just switched over to guitar. He plays both guitar and bass on some of the earlier albums I believe.
I believe that's only on My Arms, Your Hearse, since Mendez joined last minute. He does co-operate with writing the actual music in subsequent stuff, but there's no denying Akerfeldt's genius and influence in Opeth.
He's not pulling an Arjen here, though, so this is still Mendez's bass madness. =P
To RobBob, good arrangement, dude. Loved the staccato touches, and your tone is effin' sexy - I love that well-rounded semi-fretless tone. What's your gear?
Hey Dantaron. Thanks for the info - I'll try and check it out and get to the bottom of it. Very very nice Arjen reference by the way. I'm a huge fan of his, especially the Ayreon stuff, and I'm really looking forward to his Guilt Machine project with Jesper Steverlinck (sp?) as I think Jesper is one of the best singers I have ever heard. Many thanks for the compliments on the video too. I think the staccato touches come quite naturally as I'm primarily a funk player.....
And I'm playing a MusicMan StingRay 5 string through a Line6 PODXT Live. I use a really small amount of distortion on that sound, which might explain the well-roundedness quite well. Thanks again for checking out the video dude. -Rob Bob
The most part of it is great, and I'm not a bassist but your timing if off on a lot of the parts, where you accidently start a 16th or even 8th too slow in the measure.
I agree, donchipocles. Whoever disagrees is either a nOOb or doesn't play this style of music on bass. By the way man I think it sounds great either way. It could use a little more percussive stregnth, but either way you're great. Ryan Martinie is also a great metal bassist.
Would love to learn this song on bass but i'm having a trouble finding the right tabs. I get like 5 different versions when i search for it. Would you mind linking the one you used? And btw, great video. Love to see more of you. I really like your version of Girl in the Fire too.
Hey dude. There's a powertab on ultimateguitar that I think I used. I modified it a bit slightly and didn't play exactly what was written on that tab, but it should provide enough to learn from. Hope this helps and thanks a lot for checking out the videos and commenting. -Rob Bob

Hehe. I'm in the process of learning bass. I love it. I just got a Traben 5string Phoenix, it's a beauty. I'm not too good yet, Opeth songs are about the hardest basslines I can manage at the moment. If you've got any learning tips or anything, they'd be much appreciated ^_^
I've been playing guitar for 2 years, and bass for a month. I'm better at bass, though. I'm not one to give advice, I don't want to mess you up or anything.
It wouldn't be hard for one of your guitarists to learn bass; and if they don't own one, they could just use a keyboard. I have no drummers, or I do, but she's lazy and never comes to practice. Drummers and guitarists are so bloody hard to find. Everybody thinks that they can sing. Makes my job difficult.
Hey very nice playing there. I've recently been thinking of picking up playing Bass Guitar (I don't play any instruments). What's a good bass guitar model to start out with you think?
