  • It is one thing to see a historic home demolished. What is worse is that this video shows a home with many, many reusable resources and artifacts get completely and mindlessly trashed. How completely pathetic!

  • This is crazy!! Such a beautiful house that was demolished. This would never happen in England as they have proper conservation policy!!

  • they could of used material to build some low income houses

  • What a waste, doesn't look like anything was salvaged. Do they live in an alternate reality where the housing market is good at the moment? What does he mean by "Yup, moving on.."? To where? An empty lot? I see no reason why this had to happen.

  • @GavinJLang I believe the Naperville Historical Society was allowed to take a photo documentation of this beautiful home's interior. It was lovingly and personally built by the original owner, Adolph Hammerschmidt, who was one of the early settlers of Naperville. His name is listed on the plow monument by the Riverwalk.

Alas we live in a society that is increasingly ambivalent to our past...

  • @MissPickletoes this breaks my heart.....so wrong.. i feel for you

  • @dangerousprimate Thank you! And all the fool wanted was a bigger yard...or so he says. Time will tell.

  • @MissPickletoes he is a pratt..what goes around comes around.. fingers crossed eh !

  • I hope they burn in a house fire. Seriously. Assholes.

  • Pathetic. Google "Hammerschmidt Mansion duped" or "Hammerschmidt Mansion Ethics" for more on this shameful story.

  • Were the Cobbs ever investigated for the violations they willingly participated in or will they retain their license and thumb their nose at the reswt of us who play by the rules?

  • do you think the operator realized what he was doing? or didn't really care about what he was smashing up. i'm trying to imagine from his standpoint what he was thinking when he did the demo. did anyone talk to him at all?

  • Wish I knew. I could not do it....knowing the history, the beauty still inside that place, the craftmanship that went into it. Adolph did much of the work himself and the home was his pride and joy.

  • ridiculous. they just wanted to wreck it. too bad. I bet the operator of the excavator had fun tearing it down though. any comments from him?

  • Probably just another job to him....

Anyone in Naperville think this was a terrible way to pay back the person who literally gave the town Centenniel Beach?

  • Don't you think he recognized it was a beautiful old house and felt sad about putting the bucket of his excavator through it and smashing the house to bits, or do you think it really didn't matter to him at all.

  • The offers the Cobbs "waited" for never came because there was a TON of strings attached to the terms of the sale. All they ever wanted to do is tear it down...and it looks like they won. Mark my word....as soon as the economy gets better..they WILL build a home on that lot to sell. And the spirit of Adolph Hammerschmidt WILL linger there.

  • This breaks my heart.....The Cobbs will never live this down!!! A pox upon them!

  • did you get to talk to the operator at all while he was wrecking the house? what was he like? what kind of guy was he? I mean did he seem sympathetic at all or was he just getting a kick out of destroying the place? i often wonder about these things.
