I couldn't swallow pills for a couple of years. Just like you, Dan, I did the applesauce thing. One day there was no applesauce and it wasn't my mom who was there. So I did it somehow because I had to? Apparently, not having a choice is the best way to learn how to do something.
When I was little I would put it on the very very very back of my tongue, have a huge glass of water prepared, and chug it down as fast as possible.... but now I just swallow it normally.

You could try taking it in applesauce but not crushed up. Because then your body is doing something natural (eating food) while sneaking in the unnatural pill. Which might be a good start to taking it with water.

i started by pinching bits of bread and squishing them into pill-size (and shape) and swallowing those, so you don't waste/taste pills. i still hate taking pills, but i can...it's more of a forcing-your-body-to-do-something-it-thinks-is-wrong rather than a can-or-can't-do. :)

For example, chew up a nice wad of crackers and then put the pill in your mouth and then swallow. That normally works for me. Though kind of pills are capsules with powder inside. You only need the powder so put it into a drink or something and bottoms up!

Crush up the pill and put it on the spoon then put a bit of pancake syrup onto it (if you like syrup) (or something extra sweet). Helps the taste a LOT.
I have a fear of taking pills. I had several bad experiences with pill swallowing, so now every time I have to take medicine, I have to go to the bathroom, and try a couple of times before I can finally get the god damn pill down my throat.
I don't know if you mastered pill swallowing, but we teach kiddies with bits of jellys(I work in a hospital pharmacy) I taught myself with tic tacs.. for some reason its easyer to get over the gag refelx when you know its not medicine.(i can now swallow handfulls of pills if the need arises) Why didnt you get liquid penicillin? Also you should be having penicillin on an empty stomach, naughty boy! didn't the pharmacy tell you that?

i had to start swallowing pills when i was 3 1/2 because i had to have surgery on my kidneys... fun ya i know... at first i had to chew up the pill with of corse apple sauce... but then it made the apple sauce tast weird... but about a month after my surgery i could swallow pills like a pro... but my friend had that exact problum so what she did was she tilted her head back and then droped the pill in her mouth and tried not to let it tuch her toung... it was kinda intertaning to wach...
I had the same problem, until I tried it with apple sauce, first take a tsp of apple sauce, place the pill in the tsp, put it in your mouth, move it around with your tongue until you cant fell the pill, then you will be able to swallow it without any trouble, first time is the hardest but will get easier :)
I once was given some pills that were absolutely horrid tasting, that even I could not swallow. The only way I could get them down was take some chocolate fudge, wrap the pill in the fudge, and then I was able to swallow the pill. Some people described my method to those little pill pockets they have for dogs.

I got my wisdom teeth out in December! I don't remember much except for the fact that I started singing the Harry Potter theme song shortly after getting the laughing gas. Waking up, I vaguely remember getting up and stumbling around the room towards the surgeon's assistant and trying to give him a hug.

Take your pills with milk. It causes you to produce more mucus which makes the pill go down easier.

Don't worry, I had soo much trouble swallowing pills for a loong time.
Try drinking water normally with the pill in your mouth... Relax, the pill will just flow with the water.. :)
