Give him a break, he had surgery to remove some throat polyps, maybe it just takes time to heal up guys. Although i can remember i used to sing better back in the day too. But the message still gets through loud and clear. Love ya Mike, and praying for you.
never get tired of hearing "any" version of this amazing song. English does much justice to delivering the true message of this song in a way all his own. He's an amazing talent & witness for Jesus Christ. amen
The first person to sing this song in the simular style was John Starnes and he sung it also with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and it gave me chills. I think that any singer when they sing a song will sing it in the way they feel it. It is like trying to compare the many translations of the Bible everyone relates better to one or the other but the bottom line is the important message they all carry which is the same, the message of God. We need to stay focus on the message that being sung.
Why can't you just sit back and listen to words and thank God for His mercy. I don't know much about the voice but like all parts of the body maybe it needs a rest now and then. But it is Christ in Him that sings so lovely. I have read the post and how in the world could a person know what Bill Gaither was going to do such as fire Michael English. You have put a secular spin on a heavenly work.. I think Bill Gaither is deeper in his faith than you are giving him credit for.
wow! i am a latecomer to Southern gospel music and i think Michael English is like fine wine the older he gets the better he gets! Because of GVB i even know who he is, and now that he's back i don't know? GVB is totally my favorite the lineup right now is my favorite but i would love to throw russ taff back in there too!
i got a question why is that we tend to focus more on the singer than the message that they are trying to minister to us to. this my ppl is why and how so many of us miss our blessing and/or breakthrough, cause you cant seem to hear what Christ is trying to tell you for getting in your own way!! so let forget about how good he used to be and enjoy the music if that your preference if not then find something else. stop worrying about the delivery of the message but hear the message itself
Michael has an amazing voice and an amazing testimony. I'm glad he's back with the Gaithers, as he put it....again.lol....God has truly blessed him. God Bless You.
Does anyone know the lyrics to "I'll believe in you"?? where he says......" thats how long I'll believe in you. Oh! it has nothing to do with"_____"? I dont need a lot of_______?" it's been killing me, I cant figure out what he's saying!! Its on the album heaven and earth.
Here's my opinion. Michael English back then, though smoother in sound, is straining his voice by pulling up his chest voice. Through the years Michael has learned to sing with his mix voice and is now singing higher notes with ease. That's just what I believe.
As to who was better in their respective primes....frankly, that's probably a push...MAYBE advantage Michael (very few have actually heard Michael in his prime...the videos on here of "Daystar" and "Get All Excited" from the video "Praise Gathering," are probably 3 years BEYOND his "prime")
That's technically speaking....however, I also must agree with Hawg...their anointing for ministry is from the same Holy Spirit...and isn't something trying to contrast....and is the most important part.
I'm a semi-professional singer, and have significant vocal training and will speak to the on-going debate here....understanding this is MY OWN 2 cents worth...and while an "informed" opinion, it's still just an opinion.
Michael has lost quite a bit....in contemporary style, it just goes with the territory of getting older. When David is Michael's age, he'll have lost some, too. Shoot, he almost shot his voice a couple of years ago....was on vocal rest for several months from what I understand
it is true that you loose some of your voice with age, especially if you don't take care of it. Few people do, such as Steve Green; his voice is still strong. People who don't have the professional training tend to loose the quality of thier voice, such as Mike, though I still love his music. But even Sandi Patti has lost the quality of her voice, it just happens
CONT... Listen to songs on YouTube like "Daystar" "Going Home" and the "Church Triumphant" to name a few and you'll realize how truly special his voice was then. The difference now is not his voice but his conviction... he truly sings the songs from his heart now and his testimony of forgiveness makes his singing even more compelling. Praise the Lord for his power to save and restore... just my 2 cents
Michael is one of the very best. If you listen to a performer in the very beginning of their career, as opposed to towards the end, their voices are much smoother in the early years. I think a large factor is that their voices are 'seasoned'. Yes, I am sure other things that happened in his life play factor too but Michael still has a powerful voice, not as smooth, but still very impressive.
Does anyone know what tape this is from? I love michael english's voice, it blesses my soul every time I hear him sing, especially this song.May god continue to bless his ministry.
I got into GVB in the early 90's when Michael came into his prime. Saw him at Prestonwood Baptist Church in north Dallas in 1991 and was just blown away by the power of the Holy Spirit through his voice.
What gets me is when people start comparing Michael and David like this is some sort of competition? God can't be pleased by that.
No one sings like David and no one sings like Michael. They each are an incredible asset to the Kingdom of God!
God can't be pleased by that??? These are two professional vocalists. Would God be displeased with me because I argue that Michael Jordan is better than Kobe Bryant? Or maybe you're saying that it's because they are in the ministry singing Christian music? So God would be pleased if I compare their secular albums and displeased if I compare their Christian albums? And by the way no one sings like me in either... so I'm not sure what that point even means. Please keep the crazy to a minimum.
Here's the section again: "What gets me is when people start comparing Michael and David like this is some sort of COMPETITION? God can't be pleased by that."
I'm referencing some of the posts I've seen on YouTube where people are literally fighting over who's better. Neither one is better than the other, they are both anointed by the same Holy Spirit. How can one be better than the other when it's the same Holy Spirit behind it?
they are professional entertainers. the sooner people realize that the better, do you think bill gaither picks singers based on talent? he does. he would get rid of someone if they couldn't sing. they sell tickets and records and practice routines day in and day out. gaither has the same songs sang by 5 different people. is it wrong to have an opinion on who is better? no. it is wrong to pretend to know these singers hearts. they provide wholesome christian entertainment
they are NOT missionaries. gaither was going to fire English when he first started because he didn't entertain the crowd well enough. they PERFORM. win awards. good members leave and try to do solo records and REALLY care about how many records they sell. gaithers sing the same songs, people have favorites and opinions on whom sings them better, people buy the records and keep them in business. nothing wrong with that. one singer COULD be better than another. bill gaither vs. phelps???
I have been following Michaels career since I first heard him sing this song in 1984 with the Singing Americans. Before age and addiction took a toll on him, Michael had one of the most amazing voices you'll ever hear. Although he is still quite good.. The range, tone & control were much stronger and smoother in his prime.
Give him a break, he had surgery to remove some throat polyps, maybe it just takes time to heal up guys. Although i can remember i used to sing better back in the day too. But the message still gets through loud and clear. Love ya Mike, and praying for you.

What happened to Guy Penrod? Why isn't he with the group anymore? Did he go off on his own, retire, or what? It's not the same without him....

@ccaron73 I'm certainly not intending to give that impression....& I sincerely do apologize that my comments came off sounding that way.
After re-reading, I understand how that could be interpreted from what I said.....but it certainly isn't my attitude/spirit.
