This could have been the greatest match purely by the quality of tennis played. But it is great also because there was a story.

It was the world number 1 vs world number 2. Both miles ahead than the rest.

It was the King of Clay vs the King of Grass. Previously they both tried to dethrone each other many times, but without success. 2006 to 2008, they both played each other in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Then finally the King of Clay dethroned the King of Grass in 2008.

If for example a tennis final reach a tie breaker for every set for a whole 5 sets with a duration of..let's say 6 hours BUT if both players are unpopular then it won't really matter that much would it? Skip was obviously a bigger fan of either Borg or McEnroe than of Federer &/or Nadal. Skip Bayless or even others may have a point about the 1980 wimbledon but in this era, it would be impossible to change the decisions of the fans of the Fed/Nadal rivalry. Correct me on this one.

It's obvious the guy on the right is just playing devil's advocate and likes to go against the grain. This match was INFINITELY better than 1980. Much better shot-making, longer rallies, equal amount of tension (apart from, I concede, the amazing 1980 tiebreak), less errors, & built on a bigger rivalry while following from 2yrs of Nadal losing his most coveted tournament to Fed. Personally, I think Aus Open 09 was even better; although less tension/significance, had better shots & rallies

Yes I have seen the MacEnrow vs Borg ~Final on video but I think this was better. I think that this had the class, the tension, the dignity that makes it a better Final. MacEnrow's behaviour did not make a tennis match a dignified event but here Federer and Nadal .... they were THE perfect tennis players! The guy here only cares about having an American in it, but I disagree, I love MacEnrow but his matches were often a little disgraceful!

The match had so much on the line, the same match up as the previous 2 years, the two best players in the world, two of the greatest rivals in tennis history, 2 tiebreaks a 9/7 fading light, rain delays and tennis that frankly beggared belief. No doubt it was the best final ever. I am disgusted that someone should suggest that the admirable manner in which those two conduct themselves on and off court detracted from the match I argue the reverse is true.

It was the best ever coz it was so even and what these guys are capable to do is just amazing. And there were two rain delays, two tiebreaks, 9-7 fifth set and you could see ''what a shot'' at least once every game!

Nadal and Federer have, already, the greatest rivalry in tennis of all time. It wasn't just the tennis on display, it was also the background (as in the history between the two), and also that both were looking to make history. The fact that it went on until night added to it too.
