I just bought a 2010 Golf 2 door-- USA Stripped model with the five cylinder engine. The only options are rubber mats and tiptronic, yet it still feels as though I'm in a little Audi. it's my third Volkswagen and second Wolfsburg minted VW. I've also had a 1969 Beetle and a 1997 Jetta "Jazz" (base model + snazzy stereo & sunroof). I've owned 3 VW, 2 Mazda, 1 Hyundai, and 1 Toyota, and in that's how I'd place each mark in descending order in regards to driving enjoyment.
respective owners of golf 6 (and past models), your car will never stop working - maybe it will be still working even when u past away... fucking germans made it to last 1,000,000 years and double that kilometers... GOLF IS A LIVING LEGEND!!!
In the USA VW comes out near the bottom, below average, not even close to the top 10 in reliability. Also service is generally crap at the dealers. Most reliable brands: 1. Scion 2. Acura 3. Honda 4. Toyota 5. Lexus 6. Infiniti 7. Subaru 8. Hyundai 9. Mitsubishi 10. Kia.... Another more international list, Europe: 1 Mazda 2 Honda 3 Toyota 4 Mitsubishi 5 Kia 6 Subaru 7 Nissan 8 Lexus .... BMW, Audi, VW don't make the list. Do you have a Google deficiency? Honda Accord most reliable.
How old are you? It's all above average? WRONG! I'm not talking about "ALL". I'm talking RELIABILITY AS A BRAND! I'm 49, driving for 33 yrs, owned many cars, have the money to buy any car I want. I've owned VW and Porsche. I've also owned Acura. I know bad VW dealer service sucks. My wife had a 2003 Bug, had electrical problems I had to find my self. They just denied it. The radio had an internal short draining the battery. I didn't need my Engineering degree to figure it out.
People like you can't be bothered with facts. As a brand, VW is average/below average in reliability (CR's list 21 out of 33). People who own VW (like I did) will tell you this. I guarantee it will be less reliable, cost more to own than Asian. Trust me I know. Go to VW forums of VW enthusiast; they complain about dealer service, honoring warranty (which is/was ridiculously short ). Hyundai (8/33) has 100k mi/10 yr warranty and more reliable & cheaper to own than a VW!
@gmcjetpilot That part about the warranty is true, but those reliability ratings do not represent the golf itself. The Jetta is somewhat unreliable and is made in Mexico while the Golf is made in Germany. Also, Hyundai does have a much better warranty, but at the end of the day you're still driving a fucking Hyundai.
Good comment. They use to bash Japanese cars. Now Lexus & Acura are top brands. Don't laugh Hyundai may eat your lunch. I have no dog in the fight, never drove a Hyundai, but car review shows heap praise on some models. You justify VW's low consumer ratings w/ Jetta brings VW brand down? OK but VW dealers suck, and VW's are just not as reliable as Asian, but people like teutonic German VW farfegnugen engineering. I've had VW, Porsche and BMW, nice driving but expensive to maintain.
@geeflyboy I'm not saying Hyundai is bad, I'm just saying it's not a very fun brand. I realize VW isn't incredibly reliable, and if reliability was all I cared about I would have gone with a Honda or Toyota. To me though, a car being fun and to have personality is more important, and a Civic just don't have much of that. It's not boring to drive but they're freaking everywhere and that kind of ruins it for me.
Lots of Golfs on the list. They break & repairs are expensive. Do you even own a VW? A friends VW Bug had terrible electrical issues. Read the VW forums, love hate relationships abound. If you're not a car enthusiast, want a car to drive, never needs anything but routine maintenance, guaranteed 200,000 mi before any issue, VW is NOT for you. The handling of VW is a cut above.
@geeflyboy For the record I do own a MKVI golf. It's new and of course it doesn't have any problems at the moment, but I've heard all but good stuff from people I know, but as you say it's a hit and miss with VW. I'm hoping nothing bad will happen, but I feel like taking the chance is worth driving a fun car which is very nice for the price. All cars have problems, and while there's brands like Honda with almost no problems, VW isn't bad by any means.
I was reading the complaints on VW, lots of Golfs, GTI, Passat and Jetta. OH MY! The complaints are ENGINE FAILED EARLY or rocker arm broke off. LOL! Never see that on Honda! I can tell you VW dealers are reluctant to honor warranty. THIS IS WHY THEY HAVE A LOW RATINGS! You blow it off as the Jetta is bad, Golf is awesome? Delusion is useful I guess. Does your girlfriend cheat on you, get drunk & beat you, but you stay with her?
I´ve just received it now. I am impressed by the performance, not quite about the seat confort, which could be improved. Anyway, I am quite happy with it
The new Fiat Bravo has so much more character, I know it's a Fiat but it's true. As for the BM well I think it's an acquired taste and the coupe to me looks awkward. VWs arent boring just lack a bit of individuality.
Front end is ok but back end is errrm a bit conservative. Too 'safe' for my liking. It's no doubt excellent quality but from a looks point of view, the Fiat Bravo has far more flair and excitement than this.
me too.. i will never sell my 2005 mk4 TDI, it's my first ever car, and the last tdi mk4. There's just something about it. I love it.. i really do. I'll pass it down to my kid some day.
Thank god they shot this video in Iceland, at least the Journos would have something to remember. The Golf has to be the automotive equivalent of Belgium, or beige paint.....AND, how dare VW call it the mk VI when it is only a facelift of the V with Scirocco parts...To stop all posts about reliability, VW (group) generally are dissapointing. Too many niggling faults for the premium price, I bought an Alfa instead and 100% reliable..so far.
VW absolutely does not have a reputation for building reliable cars. My MKV GTI has had numerous problems (ac going out, flapper motor, leaky tail lights, spoiler had to be sawed off just to change the light bulbs, etc). Half of these issues are just poor design, the other half I attribute to poor quality. Look at all the recalls and tsbs which they "fix" by replacing it with the same crap parts that will break down in another 10k. I dread the day my warranty runs out.
And PS: this car will only be around for 3 years as VW plans on releasing the releasing its replacement, the Golf VII, ahead of schedule. The VII will be smaller, cheaper to manufacturer and hopefully for VW, more reliable than the V, on whose architechture the VI is based.
well edleast you can drive it... im not even that old to drive it.. no drivers licence... plus it will get in my country in 5,6 months maybe a year :(
It seems the only sign of a new Golf design is the wider headlights, and the more dented grill between the headlights. That thing is getting uglier every generation. Do you the Golf and the Porsche 911/boxster go to the same stylist?
What is really amazing about this video is that the Golf is actually moving under its own power. Normally, to get from point A to point B, the Golf, like most VWs, is either towed or placed on a flatbed. You have to ask ourself this: why is VW dropping the standard warranty from 48 months to 36 months. Is it because they are tired of fixing their own unreliable cars and would rather have the customer pay for the repairs themselves? Just wondering...
nidekker, you gotto be kidding me. VW golf is one of the most reliable cars out there. I've had mine since forever and it never had any sort of problem. You are either joking or you are very ignorant.
I am neither joking nor ignorant. Consider yourself a lucky anomaly that you are the proud owner of a VW that actually works. I am basing my comment on two main sources: 1. Consumer Reports, which ranks VW reliability as 33rd out of the 36 major manufacturers sold in the US and 2. JD Power, which also has VW at the bottom. And by the way, I owned a Golf II and Passat 1. Never again. Maybe lease, but never buy.
You are the first and only person that I've ever heard say VW was unreliable. Perhaps jpsnail isnt the lucky anomaly but rather you are the unlucky anomaly
Did you even bother to read my entire post? Did you understand it? I am not alone. Check out Consumer Reports and JD Powers for the facts- VWs, while great cars, are unreliable. VW fired several top executives whose marching orders were to improve reliability as VW was hemmoraging money due to recalls and warranty work. VW's quick fix was to shorten their basic warranty so they wouldn't have to pick up the tab of repairs- the customer would.
The JD Powers review was average, not unreliable. I know the MkIV Golf was a little dissapointing, and the cars of the same period were not VW's high point, (which i believe is around ('97-'02), but I've heard nothing but high praise in terms of reliability for other Volkswagen's.
Keep researching. Consumer Reports ratings are based on the reports from actual owners, not bloggers who happen to like VWs. As for VWs 'high point'? Consumer Reports does not recommend any cars from that period. In fact, they do not recommend any used VW because they are so unreliable. Believe it or not, I love VWs and have owned two of them. I am just pissed off that VW makes the choice to build unreliable cars, while passing off repair costs on to their customers.
Sorry i was referring that 97-02 was NOT Vw's Highpoint. I don't recommend any VW's from then either.
I guess I may just be biased in favor of the Golf. I am too excited to buy the Mk 6 one when it comes out in America fall 09. Really the anecdotal reviews that I've heard, from family and friends is that VW just makes great, reliable, enjoyable cars.
VWs do make enjoyable, albeit, unreliable, cars. I guess if you lease the cars, than the repairs would be on VWs dime, not yours. Anecdotal reviews are fine, but I would do more research. Keep in mind that VW has dropped its basic warranty from 4 to 3 years as they were allegedly getting hammered on warranty work that that would rather have the customer pay for. And know that the Gold VI will be out for only three years before it is replaced by the redesigned from the ground up, Gold VII.
I've had absolutley no issues/problems with my 2004 VW R32. Most reliable car I've owned, and that includes Mercedes. I'd buy anohter VW product without hestitation.
I didn't realize the 'tex made vids, let alone ones with such quality. This car is going to sell very well, esp with the dynamic drive option. very refined, very nice, what the MKV should have been, props to vw.
What the MK5 should have been? The MK5 is said to be the best GTI yet and has been praised for it's mix of sportiness and refinement by automotive journalists the world over. It is a well known fact that it was/is a huge success, especially over the MK4. The MK6 only builds on the MK5 platform which is why it isn't as big a leap forward as the 5 was to the 4.
Only reason I didn't purschase the mk5 was that it didn't mirror the looks of the mk4. The mk6 refines the mk5 into a mk4 likeness this is the reason I will be purchasing the mk6 and not the mk5.
Fair enough. I indeed liked the MK4 look as well, I owned one. To me though, the MK6 still has most of the MK5 lines with just a hint of MK4 styling with the absence of the gaping front grille.. All in all I like the look of the MK6 over the MK5 as well but the MK5 looks as modern as ever in my opinion.
you say vw is unreliable?! i bet you know nothing about cars!! I have a mk2 with 400000km passed already it is as good as new! my father has mk5 with over 100000km passed and he only changed oil, tyres and belts! And for European market they are produced in Wolfsburg,Germany!

It's only a restyling.
between V and VI i prefer the IV edition.
And i hav a V series Sportline 2.0 TDI.
When a true Golf Evolution? I want a substitute for IV, not a restyling of the fifth.
When Alfa 149 will be introduced is possible a disaster in VW group, with an old A3 and an old Golf.

i own also an golf v tdi (sportpacket) and had a iv before, the golf v hasnt great isolation as iv, you get too much noise from the engine to inside.

my bad the new GTI is kick ass looking.

The new Golf appears to have lost some of that "hot" hatch look that the MkV had.

why even bother replying? anyone who's taken a lexus to the track already understands they're purely cheap commuter vehicles. don't feed the trolls.

I didn't realize the 'tex made vids, let alone ones with such quality. This car is going to sell very well, esp with the dynamic drive option. very refined, very nice, what the MKV should have been, props to vw.
zamafir 3 years ago
What the MK5 should have been? The MK5 is said to be the best GTI yet and has been praised for it's mix of sportiness and refinement by automotive journalists the world over. It is a well known fact that it was/is a huge success, especially over the MK4. The MK6 only builds on the MK5 platform which is why it isn't as big a leap forward as the 5 was to the 4.
PorscheGTthree 2 years ago
Only reason I didn't purschase the mk5 was that it didn't mirror the looks of the mk4. The mk6 refines the mk5 into a mk4 likeness this is the reason I will be purchasing the mk6 and not the mk5.

Fair enough. I indeed liked the MK4 look as well, I owned one. To me though, the MK6 still has most of the MK5 lines with just a hint of MK4 styling with the absence of the gaping front grille.. All in all I like the look of the MK6 over the MK5 as well but the MK5 looks as modern as ever in my opinion.

It hardly adds to your credibility if you can't even spell half cars you've supposedly owned.

You guys are just mad because Volkswagens are unreliable, slow and made by Mexicans.
attv1 3 years ago
you say vw is unreliable?! i bet you know nothing about cars!! I have a mk2 with 400000km passed already it is as good as new! my father has mk5 with over 100000km passed and he only changed oil, tyres and belts! And for European market they are produced in Wolfsburg,Germany!

He's not comparing a V8 to a V4...he's comparing a V8 to an inline 4. He's also comparing a full-sized luxury car to a hatchback...
