Please. Renata Tebaldi was THE Desdemona of her generation. This is not a role that was suited to Callas, it was far too heavy for her. This role requires a true spinto, and Maria was not that.
I wouldn't agree that Maria was not a true spinto, she was the dramatic coloratura. Even though I agree that she was not particularly known as Desdemona. Renata is really THE Desdemona. In that part I agree with you. Renata's voice is so luscious, creamy, rich and subtle and moving at the same time!
I remain unconvinced that Desdemona was written for a spinto. The reasons are quite clear in the score as well as the story. The Otello-Desdemona dynamic is about contrasts, from ethnic, cultural, and class, this is also represented by Verdi in the music. Where Otello must be a dramatic tenor to handle the heavy lower register singing and orchestration, Desdemona does not have to carry an orchestra. Her character doesn't require much heavy singing. Tebaldi was the best since Ponselle!
I actually prefer the later version with Karajan, probably because of the more spacious stereo sound. The pianissimo at the end there is even more beautiful than here. That recording was the primary complete Otello for many years, even though many people (self included) had a hard time with Del Monaco. The Domingo recordings are worthwhile, and an excellent compromise is the McCracken with John Barbirolli conducting, truly compelling.
Miracolo vocale.
You're welcome though you must be the first person to enjoy Callas' shaky Ave Maria. No one is asking you to compare Tebaldi to Callas, they were different singers.
Are you out of your bloody mind, or just an imbecile? NOT BEAUTIFUL??????? What fucking planet do you live on? Tebaldi is considered one of the beautiful voices that ever sing. Sorry for the language guys, but this person is just so utterly inane and absurd that I can't control myself. You idiot, you moron.

Renata Tebaldi and Lucine Amara were the only sopranos that ever moved me
to tears at the Met Opera House in New York City. I did see her as Desdemona
there.

then you really don't get Otello, do you? ... Renata Tebaldi was the best Desdemona of the 20th century (and that's according to Maria Callas!!)

Incredible. The pianissimo in the end almost sounds like Ponselle in this recording.

Is nice but not beautifull..
Is so difficult to have a power of voice and to have a balance of the laudness and the sencitivity of the sound
Sorry i can not compare it with Callas
but even is good
Thank you

Not the first. I enjoyed Callas' haunting "Ave Maria" too. The chiaroscuro effects, dramatic colors, the vulnerability....
And I also love Tebaldi's Desdemona. They were both lovely.

Yes, you're right. I would add Kabaivanska as a great Desdemona, she was magnificent in the role.

what's with you tools who go around writing "Callas, Callas, Callas" on all other sopranos' posts?
This is a post about Tebaldi.
