Actually Dungarth, there were black people in Roman times which is even earlier than Medieval Britain so it's not surprising that Gwen is black in this show. The civilizations of Africa, Polynesia, Asia, Native Americans, Aborigines etc are WAY older than European civilizations therefore, people of colour were around a lot longer than white people. Learn your history dude! It is even said that the prophets and Jesus' followers were in fact 'people of colour'.

I was suprised to when I saw her but pleasantly. Finally there is one in a mainstream fantasy show. There rarely are black characters in fantasy. They call it a different country in the series, so I don't think it is supposed to be early Britain. I'm not sure though, I'm not an expert on the legend so the name could actually be part of the legend. But at the end of the day does it really matter. She's a good actress and she connects so well with the other characters.

i discovered merlin like a month ago and have read all of these comments about how ugly angel coulby/gwen is and try as i might i cannot see it. She is so happy and smiley and effervescent. She actually makes me like gwen/arthur while in most adaptations i'm rooting for some other person to get with arthur. What is more, is that she is gorgeous, especially when she smiles, and she has the personality to boot. :D
