Sept '62 road and track showed a 2020lb. 260 cubic inch Cobra with 260hp easily went the 153mph the 3:54 gears would allow @ 7000rpm. the comp 289 cars were good for 165 with the 345 or so horse power they had. Even in 1965 the 289s were pushing 380-385hp and 165 was the limit. You can see the Daytona coupe was a must for the longer European courses where 175mph was the norm. By 1965 the 2000lb. coupes easily hit 190 and change at old Le Mans and won the world champion of makes the year.
The late Dick Smith, CSX 3035, had the number 198 on his car since the mid 1980s because while vintage racing the car at Daytona he was clocked at 198mph, pretty impressive since the 427 Cobra had the aerodynamics of a brick. There is no doubt Smiths car is one of the most original 427s around today.
Looking for a cobra that was in Arizona back in 1985. Red, Aluminum, Full-Race (16 gauges inside cab, rivet/snaps around cab, toneau cover with zipper opening for driver only, full windshield with full rear-view mirror (stretched from left side to right side,) no stripes, can't remember if it was a 429 or a 289, but it had a cobra snake above the numbers on the side badge. And, last but not least, it had a HEART-Shaped Hood Scoop. Any ideas?
They Were made by Ford Shelby so they are known as Ford products. This is not a Kit Car made by someone in a barn, this one was Made in the Factory by AC Shelby themself.
Now THIS is a car. I was fortunate enough to go for a ride in a very similar Cobra with a sohc motor, a BEAST does not describe that car. Fastest car I have ever been in. I am sure today modern cars are actually faster but this car FEELS like it could rip your face off.
I have the real thing. It is an 8 cylinder beast and is yellow. It isn't mine it is my dad's and I'm 11. Also my dad got it at unimaginable prices and it still needs some peices in it. (it is a kit car)
@redhot916spd Yes, I agree. Shelby American coudn't crank out anymore speed beyond 150mph. because of aerodynamics associated with the roadster. Adding the sleek fastback resulted in speeds approaching 200mph.
I think the trunk space impressed me the most.

the only "audio" you're gonna hear from that car is the sound of that engine.

Classic American beats classic anything-else, besides the SL300 Gullwing and maybe a COUPLE of Ferrari's.

If it is so good How come Carol Shelby Licenses Superformance Cobras and not Contemporary Cars?
sixtiesforever1966 2 years ago
@sixtiesforever1966
Because superformance pays for it.
Contemporary is no longer around.

you mean quick, the reason the Daytona coupe came to be because no matter how much power Carrol added , they had no top end. Very unaerodynamic.
