This is stupid. Korea would be much better off if it were one big South Korea, and it could be allowed to exist with a large demilitarized buffer zone overlapping the border territories of China and Korea, and would be under the condition that Korea remained neutral politically and that NATO troops wouldn't be allowed. @fringeelements Yeah, Korea would be better off. However, China just got through a period of time in which a bunch of foreign powers occupied its land. The Chinese resented the foreign occupation and when they finally got their full sovereignty back, the Korean War flared up. The US was going to invade China (and change the regime and probably have troops stationed there in the future), which is why PRC intervened. I believe that because of this, China's not losing its culture like Japan & Korea

Well the "culture" is not really important. What's important is the race, as having black people in your country for example will cause them to demand special privileges and increased entitlements. So long as Japan keeps out the non-integrateable races, they'll maintain their standard of living and relatively harmonious life. "Culture" is simply the sum of race + technology, and is optimal for a given technological environment.

@NERFELFLA - I have read some memories and they say that the POWs who were treated well were thouse who agreed to accept the process of indoctrination. Those who opposed ideological courses were mistreated. Not only mistreatment is against the Geneva convention, but also making any difference in the treatment of prisoners regarding any other differences than rank, health status, gender, age or professional skills. Willingness to submit to indoctrination is none of these factors.

POWs have to follow the orders referring to keeping order, but they cannot be obliged to attend any cources directed against their country.

In case of American or other POWs in North Korean or Chinese hands it was a very large proportion, even this documentary admits that at 1:01. If you read the report, you will find information about similar or worse attrocities against POWs in the Korean War. BTW; what kind of "progress" are you talking about?

They might have been "lenient" at the beginning hoping to attract POWs to their ideology, but not if POWs refused. This is clearly against the Geneva Convention.

@NERFELFLA - The report was a sort of internal report, so I don't think the Senate wanted to have things invented. I also don't think former prisoners had any reason to lie. Of course the question of credibility is subjective, but I definitely doubt the credibility of Communist propaganda. Escapes would be possible if there were any hope for help from outside. In China they could not hide among other people (different physical appearance) and the front line was far away.

@NERFELFLA - usually this is the way the crime gets discovered - you have a witness report. I could understand that the former prisoners could have been reluctant to say that they were treated well. But they had no reason to invent the stories of abuse. Also the number of prisoners who did not survive captivity indicates that the prisoners were treated badly.

The indoctrination was not only about how good the communism was, but also that the prisoners were abandoned, had no hope. Even if most prisoners did not believe in communism, they believed there was no hope. The Japanese treat prisoners like animals and animals are not indoctrinated, so the prisoners still had will to escape.

The reason American POW's were being well treated may be the result of the aid and goodwill we provided to China during the Japanese occupation.
