Pat O'Brien's friend or manager wasn't too swift calling Arlene to ask where he has to be on What's My Line? The whole premise of the show was based on surprise. Why didn't this person call the whole panel and see O'Brien get kicked off the show?
Pat O'Brien reminds me so much of my grandfather. I always think of him when I see Pat O'Brien in old movies. Wonderful man - met him in 1981 at Notre Dame.
@Vitte4 ~ lol. the same mike todd that dumped gypsy rose lee for joan blondell? then later married elizabeth taylor who was half his age? who when he died in a plane crash joan blondell said, "i hope the son of a bitch screamed the whole way down"?
john daly was so smooth. he really was like a father to the panel, keeping them in line..and they listened. he put kovac in his place when he went into the german routine.
Todd is simply selling his frigging movie - he must have lost his Donkey and the horse & the saddle to be so desperate- He may have taken the same tack with Miss Taylor & pushed her to the extreme
"Dutch Comic" means "Deutch, (German) Comic". Vaudeville comics often used accents to kids various ethnic groups, (it would be outrageous now but was acceptable then), and those who parodied German were called "Dutch Comics".
Also, the people called "Pennsylvania Dutch" in the early years of the USA were actually from Germany. "Dutch" and "Deutsch" seem to have long been confused here.
This unusual panel arrangement happened because Todd needed to plug his party and Dorothy Kilgallen was on press duty reporting Queen Elizabeth II's 1957 North American tour. In NYC, DK followed the queen's parade in a limousine. Queen following Queen.
Kovacs does amazing comedy in his WML audition period. Frequently he asked contestants if their products could fold. In this episode, he asked that of a man who manufactured folding beds. Kovacs solved the game himself! Very funny moment.
@soulierinvestments Are any other segments of this particular show posted on YouTube? I'd love to see how Arlene handled being the only female on the panel in the regular segments.
Mike Todd, deal-maker producer of "Around the World in 80 Days," visits WML to publicize his upcoming party in Madison Square Garden for 18,000 people. It evolved into the biggest New York social disaster of the 1950s. Todd convinced CBS to broadcast the party live as a news event: Walter Cronkite anchored the coverage (refer to his NPR account) and convinced CBS to pay for the honor! G-T paid guest panelists $750; so WML paid for Todd's plug! Nice work if you can get it.
There's a nice clip on youtube showing Pat O'Brien's good humor when they are filming and his hair piece flys off. He's very funny with it.--Also, thanks so much for posting this!
Pat O'Brien, more popular in Ireland than the Pope, faking a German accent. LOLOL.
1957: G-T auditions Ernie Kovacs as a permanent 4th panelist. AF breaks her foot. Producer Mike Todd gives negative karma to WML not once but twice. Here he crosses O'Brien. During his mystery guest appearance he sulked when BC mistook him for deMille. (See WML at 25) Still, it is interesting to contemplate what Todd would have done as a movie producer in the 1960s had he survived the 1958 plane crash.
Michael Todd: A sad figure. Even in this game.

I guess Todd was too much of a maverick to wear the customary bow tie.

Todd comes on like a thug.

Todd was not the least bit pleasant or in the spirit of the show.

And of course Todd was married to Liz Taylor when he died, right?

Ernie Kovacs is one the greatest "forgotten" comedians. He was truly an original.
TheLousyCafe1960 2 years ago
What Kovacs should have asked every mystery guest:
"Do I owe you money?"
He probably did in many cases and it would have been a riot.
