Awesome lense! I use it for indoor soccer games as well as outdoor wildlife and birds. I sure glad I sprung for this over any other. I also use the 2X extenders which gives me close to 600mm with my 30D.

As far as I know, there is no 28-300 F2.8, just a 3.5-5.6!!

I am struggling between this and a Canon 28-300 IS L -F2.8 seems much more versatile to me. The 28-300 if 5.6 at 300 so too slow for sport, and 28-300 L sounds great but its SO heavy I cannot see it ever being my standard fitted all"-rounder" lens

I wonder -- Is a 5D mk II (21mpix) and a smaller zoom but one can crop into, better than a 20D (10mpix) with a higher zoom?

I'd love a 5d Mk II but cannot afford to upgrade my camera ANDmy lenses.

it is good for both.

This lense is the most popular profesional lense.

The low F number (2.8) is good for portraits by making the backround blurry, and good for sports because in low light areas (indoors, gyms, night) the F2.8 will help give you a fast shutter speed without losing all your light.

This is the perfect "all-around" lense. But make sure you get the 70-200 F2.8 IS USM

I have it, and you can very easily use it for both. However some sports with large fields can make things difficult, but for Hockey/Soccer/Lacrosse/Basketb­all etc it is very usable!
