Those Dual turnstable are pretty cool! I hope to find one locally along w/ those Pioneer turntables from the 70s that looks very similar to it w/ the silver cobra-like head shell.
Hi, I just found one of these in the shed of the house I moved into. It works! But I can't get any sound. There are two wires, one for the wall plug and one I don't recognize. Does this have anything to do with sound? If so, what do I plug it into? If not, what should I do?
@ixnay36 Hello. THanks for watching my video. Most likely, your new found Dual Turntable will need servicing for it work correctly. Over the years, the parts need lubrication and in many instances replacement too. The reason you may not be hearing anything is that you need an amplifier with a 'phono' input.
I bought mine second hand in the mid 1970's adding a Shure V15 type IV cartridge. I remember that it hummed but not always. When the turntable started to return the arm before the records would finish playing, I took it to United Audio in Mount Vernon, NY where they fixed and adusted it. I remember it worked great after that. Actually my cartridge stopped working but the turntable continued on. I remember hearing the rumble when I started to play a record in the lead- grooves.
Never seen this one in action. Thanks for sharing. Nice to see that you have the stacking spindles as so many times they are missing and so hard to come by. I have a Technics SL-1360 and Bic 980 that I'm fortunate enough to have the stacking spindles for. They are also fine tables that I've been very happy with.
@MrAAA3330 Thanks for commenting!! I have a Technics SL-1350 (which is the same as the 1360 but in black finish). I also have both stacking spindles for that one. And you are right, they are great turntables too!
I love all of my (7) Dual turntables but each one of them have the same damn grounding problem which causes an audible hum either during or after vinyl play. I took them to be repaired by an audiophile technician here in Los Angeles/Studio City, he told me this is a common problem with Dual turntables; no matter how I ground, the hum is still heard; expensive and cheaper turntables (Thorens, Technics) don't have this problem, why Dual?
@KojiRecords Thanks for your comment. I only own this Dual. It also has the hum you are describing; however, it is only audible when you turn the volume up very high.
@Discotized A later model, 2-speed Dual turntable actually blew out my right speakers from the (2) pairs that were connected; that Dual went straight to a thrift store. I love Duals because nearly all the ones I have are 3-speed (i.e. I have lots of 78s with a 78 stylus on my 1009) with (2) 45 spindle changers for stacking/playing singles. However, hum is heard clearly on some models even during record play if grounding problem is serious. Dual turntables would be PERFECT if not for this issue.

Your Dual 1229 and the tunes you played remind me of my uncle and I listening to records until the wee hours of the morning on his 1216 in the 70's. BTW, is that first 45 you played with the manual adapter the theme from "The Men" by Isaac Hayes?
Hi, thanks for the responce on the Crown Heights Affair song, never would have guessed that. And great turntable, i know these Dual's are built like tanks.
great video ,thats one clever autochanger liked how slow the pickup arm drop was on the record. i had a 70's J.V.C nivico radiogram that also had a dampened drop.
thanks for the nice video! Could you please tell me the name of the instrumental song of the second 7" vinyl record (after "KISS" from Prince)? I'm looking for it for years now.
Thks man,I really want a Dual, but here,in Brazil, the garrards are everywere(expecially the 630 model) Because,a Brazilian brand called Gradiente, bought the english Garrard on the late 70s.
I personally never heard the Shure v15 type 3 cartridge - which at that time (1973-1975) was considered very high end. I can tell you that i really like the Stanton 681eee. I recently bought a generic stylus (needle) for the cartridge, and the sound was not the same. The Stanton 681eee was considered a 'calibration standard' .. it's very smooth across all frequencies.
If you get the chance to score a type III or IV and put a supertracker plus or a Jico SAS on it you will see (hear) why the III and IV still pull in the prices on the used market that they do! I have a III with a STPlus on my CS-721, superb!
I've picked up a number of duals from the 12 series in european fleamarkets, all that was needed was the rubber 'steurpimpel' under the arm mech replacing (I used a piece of mains wire insulation cut to size) so the arm would move back in auto mode.. I also had to remove hard grease near the cam.... and now for another 35 years hassle free service!
Dual made excellent low-mass tone arms that are very sensitive and responsive, the straight tone arm is the way to go. I have a few Duals in my collection. Right now Im getting 2 identical 1964 1009s restored. Cant wait to get em back! Its great 2 see how you take care of yours. Great records too!
Hey! Cool video...and cool turntable of course...welcome to the club of 1229-owners so to say...I see u haven´t got the original shure pickup system on either...it seems impossible to get the origial needle for that...
Thanks for commenting. Yes, i believe the Shure V15 Hi-track V3 would of fit perfectly. The styluses for those are available, but for too much money on e-bay.

My parents had one of those 1229s, and I loved it to death, but it bit the dust way back in 1985. Peace.
