There's nothing wrong with the music, per se (even if it's not to someone's tastes), it's just that it is mostly extraneous dramatically. It does work near the end of the "space talk" and throughout the "trip to the moon" -- those scenes don't *need* "power" and they do carry enough emotion for what's required, even if they were not meant as a commentary on muzak. No doubt North gave Kubrick what he asked for, Kubrick just (as he was want to) changed his mind, and mostly for the better.
I can't watch any Star Trek post tos because of the interminable incidental music. And this gives me that feeling. It's too much. Most of the time, incidental music just makes a thing feel like a commercial for itself.
of course the music has no emotion or power, it's supposed to be a comment on muzak and modern living -- mundane talk, mundane music -- like music you'd hear in a mall. i'm sure they would've found a way to massage it into the actual film had it not been for kubrick's change of mind.
sometimes -- as in this case -- directors fall in love with their temp scores, and there's nothing even a brilliant composer can do to change his mind.
Thank you! Totally agree. Kubrick was right on to flush this. Check out North's original music for the opening title music and "The Dawn Of Man" sequence if you haven't already. Hilarious shit. Sounds like a high school band warming up before the big game.
Could be we're so used to the original soundtrack,but....this does absolutely nothing for me,it sounds just like some 2nd rate tv play score, thankfully

This music has no power, no emotion, and is instantly forgettable.
