  • i read that i always should use EQ before compressor, cause you want to compress the fine sound you got with the EQ. isn't that important in cubase? i am using logic, thats why I'm asking.

  • @jezzazchrizt

i dont find it logical to use EQ beforce comp because with the comp u lower the volume of the frequencies u "pushed" by the EQ and bring them back to the ones u "lowered" in the EQ. so i would compress first and then "kill" all frequencies i dont like. But i would bet it depends on the situation ;)

  • Eeeeasy ... this is Distance. :)

  • I'd like to know techniques like overall compression/reverb. Alix Perez runs his tune through a compressor before sending it off to mastering, surely the engineer will take care of overall compression and if each track is compressed properly it won't need any overall? Is it all personal preference or would you suggest there's a better way to compress? Also do you compress drums individually i.e. kick, snare, hats, or all bussed to one compressor, or both? Safe

  • i need to know how to keep the sub bass and other synths from clashing. i have the high and low pass filters correct on the synths but when the track is played all together the mid range bass affects the volume of the sub bass. i just want the sub bass to stay seperate from the rest of the track and cant figure out what im doing wrong. if theres a tut for that a link would be much appreciated. thanks

  • @justindowty Well only thing that I can think of is that your sub is clashing with your low mid synth. EQ out till about 100-120hz. on your low mid synth.

  • Hopefully there will be another tutorial. I'd love to see a tut on how to make drums/eqing/mastering.

  • In depth Granular synthesis and those phat neuro bass lines!

  • Nice one! Very helpful.

  • LOVE THE video mate . and love your tunes. respect

  • blackmill type music tutorial plz

  • cocky bastard... listenin to ur own music the whole time :P nice tut btw :D

  • could you pleeeeaase do a kryptic minds type bass in the song cant sleep xx

  • a sound FX tutorial would be sick

  • Brilliant video. thank you very much :D

  • for someone into the heavy dark dubstep side of things these tutorials are money! Keep it up.

  • Drum EQ & compression tutorial pleaseee

  • aw nice one ! thanks i wanted a decent compressor for a while now, time too experiment nutty professor style

  • finally man! searching for distance masterclass tuts since youtube born!

    MORE MORE please!!!

Make a video with you in your studio mate!

    that would be great

  • New tutorial coming soon on the Chestplate channel, just search Chestplates!

  • Wow, such an amazing producer, doing tutorials?! How awesome! Instantly subscribed. Love distance.

    FUCKING CHESTPLATE!

  • Thanks heaps for the tutorial, Distance, really appreciate it. If you're considering making another one soon, I would love it if you could make it on EQ techniques. :)

  • i was gonna click like but it was at 140, felt bad to do it hah ;) BIG UP

  • nice vid thanks. suggestion: snares in dubstep and also mid range bass processing.

  • Hey distance just a question im bought/using fl studio producer edition 10 but i see ur using cubase do you recommed it if so what are like the pro/cons compared to fl.

and keep it up i mean underground :P

  • @MidnaZ FL/cubase/live.. all suit the same purpose.

There shouldn't be anything you can do in cubase, (as far as basic midi + audio is concerned)

That can't be done in FL.

Personally, I just like cubase more. I started with FL.

I wouldnt worry about pros and cons.. just make it happen with what you have.

    Many professionals use FL.

  • i bought a pioneer hdj 500 just for this channel aint he wasnt lying about the bass :D Pioneer ftw just like distance imo the dub/dubstep pioneer along with skream, benga :P

  • @MidnaZ I have hsm80 yamaha monitors and when there is sub bass I can feel it in my chest haha not even with the volume half ways

  • this is a dream come true.. great tutorial here, hopefully more alike will be posted in the future

  • thank you <3

  • Really good tutorial, if all tutorials on youtube were to this quality we'd all be professional

  • whooop! distance doing tuts?? massive!! great tut ! highly understandable!!! big ups from croatia!

    love your music!

  • lol you can make the baddest ass of tracks but you can't crop up a video? haha just playin with ya mate. Thanks for all the tutorials and I find it sick that you actually take part in your site activity. kudos.

  • @TheDjDistance i knw this is probably a retorical question but how do u link massive to cubase?

  • im loving this tutorial

  • I literally can not believe that this tutorial has not had more views! Not only is sub bass pretty damn essential but I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather take notes from than Distance. Anything I can learn from you my friend I'd consider priceless knowledge! True legend in the game! big up

  • tutorial on how you made that crazy bassline in night vision. still smashin it

  • @072RudeBoy quick tip dude, to get that sound:

open up massive, on your first osc put the waveform on the one labelled 'Scrapyard'. then put any kind of LFO on the wavetable position from left to right and it'll make that sound. vary it up with different speeds or a performer instead of the lfo to create some abstract stuff. spread the knowledge :)

  • This helped a lot, why not do a tutorial on how to pick one's nose properly?

  • Very good tutorial D more more more bruvaaaa !!!!

  • Chutorial haha, wicked tutorial Distance, a tutorial on mixdowns and mastering/EQing would acoe of great help, and tips and tricks on ambience within a track, and also key notes of where to play the lead lines and stuff to make it sound darker.

    Thanks Distance.

  • i'd like a tutorial on creating solid ambience as well as making your song move as on instrument if you know what i mean

  • im noticing it really does come down to some bad ass plugins used correctly to give it that quality touch, not most, but a lot of the time. loovin this tut man great for inspriation, keep em comin!

  • after looking for ages, trolling through skrillex's polluted dubstep sounds, i finally found this, some real dubstep

  • just a quick tipp - it sounds awesome, when you add a wavearts tubesaturator!

  • @jumptodaup ok...powersuite 5??

  • awesome tutorial !

  • Great tutorial :D what vsts did you and the other original dubsteppers use before massive?

  • The harmonics are a big issue for me, when I make tracks so it's good for me to see you address it.

  • A tutorial on arrangement would be great. One of the hardest things to do is move beyond the initial 16 bar loop. It would be awesome to get some insight on how you arrange your tracks.

  • While you producing do you have compressor or something on your master channel? <3

  • @croatianthug No I dont

  • @croatianthug He wouldn't because a compressor would lower the "roof" as I call it, so really bassy kicks sound distorted when you don't want them to be.

  • you should ask Loefah to make a tutorial on sub bass

  • @Skreeaamizm this was awesome btw thanks

  • nice !

  • really good

  • cannot thank you enough Greg; great tutorial. very helpful. i also second the idea of following a tune thru all aspects of production, from beginning to end (in many installments, obv)

  • So Glad you are doing these tutorials the way you talked everything through helped alot! would love a video on drum programming & how you make your basslines but tbh i will very much look forward to any tutorial you put out cheers!

  • +1 distance! unlimited respect for this tutorial , hands down one of my favourite producers!

  • Thanks for this man, your the shit. Always loved your tunes and been a chestplate supporter keep doing you man. Big up

  • Tutorial from my favorite artist of all time? CANT get ANY BETTER than THIS! It would be awesome if you were to create a tune that we could follow its production on Youtube in several tutorial stages. Then maybe who knows, it gets a release :) KEEP IT UP! HUGE ups from California! ps: you need to stop by in LA more often!!!

  • Great stuff, good to hear your wisdom lord Distance.

  • Nice one Distance!

Something on getting the drum and bass to sit together would be helpful.

  • You can read a tutorial anywhere about mixing and mastering, this is DISTANCE, ask him about something unique to him! I would like to see one on your drum programming as well!

  • Keep your suggestions coming, and make sure you subscribe to my channel.

Looking to get other producers involved in future tutorials

  • @TheDjDistance Cheers for doing these tutorials Distance they were easy to follow and have been a good help. I know you mentioned doing a mixdown tutorial possibly in one of your vids, would be great if you could make that one.

    Cheers again.

  • @TheDjDistance Could you do a tutorial on how to do melodies?

  • @fitzy299 I've noticed Distance uses F, F# and G a lot in his melodies if that helps. Just come up with something that sounds good to you.

  • @TheDjDistance , I'd suggest making your video bigger. This has really helped me though, I always thought you used a simple sinewave, but I know now what you mean about getting some harmonics on the sub so its more audible.

I'd like to see some tutorials on drum programming, drum eqing or eqing in general, mastering the whole lot.

And some tutorials on getting a nice gritty midbass.

    Huge up!

  • safe

  • BIG UP DISTANCE!!

  • sick tutorial cant wait to see more :)

  • tutorial for guitar bass lines like the one in menace, ie what process effects did u use

  • Many thanks Greg for this, love your work (got most everything you put out on vinyl), ever since becoming a fan of your work I've always wanted to peek over your shoulder inside the studio, so I appreciate this. I have a major request, I would love to learn a bit about your approach on sidechain compression. For example on tunes like "Sun & Moon (Distance Remix)", I love that heavy sidechain compression and filter on the intro that sounds like it's pumping the whole master bus. Bless up!

  • @DJAnthonyJacobs Also very interested in how you get some of your drums sounding very live, like rock drums.

  • @DJAnthonyJacobs I think its pretty simple, just search sidechaining tutorials into Google. And find or record some rock drums, or add some realistic reverb (Distance uses Arts Acoustic Reverb).

  • a nice bassline tutorial would be sick

  • cheers man! this is great

  • Would love to know how you start on your beats!

  • the sounds of another world

  • tutorial on pads, atmosphere and how to make your tune sound full and warm/crisp ive been producing almost three years now and just cant get the sound right!

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for this mate, better than all the "how to make skrillex 'bass" tutorials" lol. keep em coming g.

  • a tutorial on drum compression would be really useful.

  • big ups for doin this man, its producers like you who help the newbies shape their sound..could you do a tutorial on drums or synths?

  • cheers for this

  • Percussion and bass mixing to make them stand out more please

  • PS, cheers for this Mr Distance!

  • Bass layering techniques and lead sounds.

  • Just remeber I dont have any beats or any other elements rolling so some of this wont apply when working with a full track. All about the tweak.

  • @TheDjDistance Great tutorial man. If you get round to doing another one think you could do something on mixing down drums or how to create some of your old synth sounds like off 'My Demons?'. Cheers

  • You could make a tutorial about a full song. In parts..

  • Cheers for this man! Few good little tips in here. Any chance you could do something regarding lead sounds?

  • Any suggestions or requests for future tuturials make em here

  • @TheDjDistance A tutorial on mixdown and mastering would be amazing!

  • @mikecrevil I completely agree.

  • @TheDjDistance Drum programming!

  • @TheDjDistance glad to see you doing something like this. love your music. there are dozens of basic massive tutorials. and massive synthesis only goes so far. ive noticed that the real magic is typically a result of screening frequencies and resampling them post massive; in essence creating the illusion that it was just one freshly synthesized bassline. how about tips on working with frequencies and tips on making the best mixdown of a track in this genre of constantly competing frequencies?

  • @TheHumansight perhaps a look into your POST massive process on a bassline in terms of equing and filtering and so forth? even though it would vary on the specific sound youre going after i guess.

  • @TheDjDistance Cool tutorial mate, would be great if you made a drums tutorial, or maybe mix down and mastering tutorial.

  • DROP THE MIC :P

  • SECOND

  • FIRST

  • @tomypg congrats mate, you're a greater man than i.
