Okay, so you're part of a surprise birthday party and the birthday person asks, "Is there going to be a surprise party for me?" and you, not wanting to wreck the surprise, says, "No." Is this a sin? Now you're a General captured by the enemy and they ask you if they will be attacked from this place or that place and you, while knowing the answer, tell them they will be attacked from another place which, in fact, is incorrect. Is this lie a sin? I'm looking forward to hearing your exceptions.
Subterfuge is a common tactic in military and paramilitary operations. One such example of this is when Joshua deceived the army of Ai. I do not believe this is sin.
Whether or not God considers subterfuge at a surprise party sinful, I don't know. What I do know is this. Many people ask such questions as if to suggest the only time they've lied is on a battlefield or at a birthday party. People often try to rationalize, minimize, or justify the sins they want to hang on to the most.
im sorry but i have to disagree Mr Miano.... a lie is a lie is a lie... there is no grey area in the eyes of God white lies are lies and helpful lies are lies and harmful lies are lie... if your not telling the truth its a LIE pretty simple to me... you can add special names to a sin it doesnt change the sin whatso ever... is abortion a sin... yes its murder at its root.. again people try to make a grey area give it a new name but in the purest form your breaking Gods law...
excellent!

Sin always has consequences down the line even if it does seem inconsequential at the time. Some very good analogies.
