I disagree when you say to start out in FFA.

I started playing COD when MW2 came out. I was not experienced in fps either... I started playing FFA the first day, because I thought I wouldn't need to worry about letting down teammates by sucking.

However, I got absolutely DOMINATED in any FFA I played, going 3-17 and scores like that. Then, I went to mercenary TDM, and started going 10-10.

FFA is extremely fast paced, and you can die A LOT quicker than in TDM, I say, start in TDM....
