I don't think the issue is really with whether it's right or wrong; more, the problem is that he's authoritatively made a verdict about something that should be subjective to begin with.
It's true that I hold my pick in an unorthodox way, but so do many others. Marty Friedman is a great example, and he's an excellent, renowned guitarist.
I'll gladly take your opinion on some matter as long as it's backed by respect, but to say "You're wrong. Fix that." is crass, and quite frankly, a bit rude.

omg - i love watching you play and sing and tutor joe!! i just realized that ur last name was LIM <--same as my ex-bf of 3yrs... (awkward) but yea, he's flip/chinese. and he's here in cali. anyways, yup, still love watching you play =D
When you're playing an Am the A string is supposed to be open so just pluck the A without holding it down. Then play the D string without holding it down and hammer onto the second fret. Not sure if my wording was weird or anything but if I didn't help, try telling me exactly what you're having trouble with. Is it that you don't know what hammering/open means?
nice vid not sure if ur korean but my last names lim too lol do u have a sn? cuz like i can't get some parts like you went too fast xP thx for the vid
I hit the strings with my knuckles and stick my thumb out so that after I hit the strings, my thumb is in position to pluck the E string. If you listen carefully, you can hear me pluck the string before each progression. It's just something I do and not what Taylor does in the CD, but just throwing that out there if you want to try it.
thanks for posting!! this helped a lot :)
just wondering, for the scale during the chorus, are you supposed to strum for every note or hammer?

Hey Joe,
When you hit the guitar with your hand, are you hitting the strings with your knuckles and the guitar with your thumb?
jaggedtheelite 4 years ago
I hit the strings with my knuckles and stick my thumb out so that after I hit the strings, my thumb is in position to pluck the E string. If you listen carefully, you can hear me pluck the string before each progression. It's just something I do and not what Taylor does in the CD, but just throwing that out there if you want to try it.
