You don't have to be Alfar to be a mage, I got owned by an ork caster (i'm alfar) it all depends on how much you skill it up. Orks have the lowest intelligence just means you start out with less mana.

i think its because DF plans to be able to have large scale battles. If everyone had totally unique faces i would imagine it would cause some bad lag...but sayin that i would also like to have a detailed character creator too
