There are no death panels, but there is the provision for regulating / limiting care on a selective basis, kind of like "end of life triage". Regulations that will cull the herd of elderly to save money.

@Toddinfantry Those provisions are there in private practice too. They're both reasonable and unavoidable, and it is very unlikely they'll be abused because people care about old people.
I'm sure there is a better way - real single-payer that would eliminate private insurance would be a lot better, but that's politically impossible in the US right now. This healthcare reform bill isn't amazing, but it is an improvement over what was.

Let the states decide how to regulate the ins co. in each state and allow cross state ins purchase. And why are they allowed to give enormous bonuses while they raise our rates and deny coverage? Because the people quit acting for themselves and allow gov't to do the deciding.

States deciding how to regulate insurance leads to harmful competition - any state regulation is dodged by people buying outside. That's not healthy.
Enormous bonuses are less likely in the future, as the provisions mandating a high cost-benefit-given ratio kick in. The rate increases are also being regulated. Things are getting better b/c of the bill

@Toddinfantry Rates went up mostly before the bill passed and partly because such regulation didn't happen yet. The Industry preferred being unregulated so it could do the same bad-but-profitable behaviour it always did. In the future that won't be possible, so in the long run we win out.
I would prefer govt officials use the same system, but really I'd prefer we all join a single-payer system and abolish private insurance. Healthcare is a basic right.

@Toddinfantry The rate increase is not a good thing, although that was not mandated or desired by health reform (not obamacare - it's a creation of congress, not the president). The actual effects of the bill will be very useful to those same employees.
We are taxed properly - if anything we're taxed less than most other countries, but still many Americans whine because they don't want to pay upkeep on our nation. That's why our infrastructure and education systems are worse than others.

Besides me being European, very very tired during watching and actually missing the first part, I was "stunned" - i had to watch it - and though patriotism does not exist in my world view.... for a brief moment, I thought, well if i were American...... i'll probably burst out a "HELL YEAH". I will have to admit that the speech itself was very well written, however the truth is perhaps far from that: people are dying in the middle east, and the conditions are not as good as he describes. Although a shift of change is possible, it will not be as simple as in listening to Obama's words. It will take more. MUCH more.
Hopefully the United States can not only redeem itself to its own citizens, but also to the rest of the world out there.

There are no death panels, but there is the provision for regulating / limiting care on a selective basis, kind of like "end of life triage". Regulations that will cull the herd of elderly to save money.
Don't misread me either. I am not a Rep or Dem or Ind, I am simply an American citizen that sees huge problems in out country and no common sense solutions from gov't. There is a better way.

@Toddinfantry Those provisions are there in private practice too. They're both reasonable and unavoidable, and it is very unlikely they'll be abused because people care about old people.
I'm sure there is a better way - real single-payer that would eliminate private insurance would be a lot better, but that's politically impossible in the US right now. This healthcare reform bill isn't amazing, but it is an improvement over what was.

Let the states decide how to regulate the ins co. in each state and allow cross state ins purchase. And why are they allowed to give enormous bonuses while they raise our rates and deny coverage? Because the people quit acting for themselves and allow gov't to do the deciding.

States deciding how to regulate insurance leads to harmful competition - any state regulation is dodged by people buying outside. That's not healthy.
Enormous bonuses are less likely in the future, as the provisions mandating a high cost-benefit-given ratio kick in. The rate increases are also being regulated. Things are getting better b/c of the bill

@Toddinfantry Rates went up mostly before the bill passed and partly because such regulation didn't happen yet. The Industry preferred being unregulated so it could do the same bad-but-profitable behaviour it always did. In the future that won't be possible, so in the long run we win out.
I would prefer govt officials use the same system, but really I'd prefer we all join a single-payer system and abolish private insurance. Healthcare is a basic right.

@pgunn01 Everyone screams that "we can't afford the cost of ins", and now I have that reality. So ask yourself one good question...how many would be able to afford ins, among many other things, if we were taxed properly? Almost everyone would. But we allow the gov't to tax us mercilessly, from all different angles, with so many hidden taxes that it is no wonder we are going under. Now how is my post Obamacare rate increase of 38% a good thing? Ask my employees with kids.

@Toddinfantry The rate increase is not a good thing, although that was not mandated or desired by health reform (not obamacare - it's a creation of congress, not the president). The actual effects of the bill will be very useful to those same employees.
We are taxed properly - if anything we're taxed less than most other countries, but still many Americans whine because they don't want to pay upkeep on our nation. That's why our infrastructure and education systems are worse than others.

Without the insurance which most Americans cannot get, they are dead if they have an illness that costs too much, need a newer drug, or special care. You must be independently wealthy.

@SUZIEISINTERESTED the point is: A)Doctors are squeezed out of being True Caregivers, as they are overloaded with patients, and given no real incentive to do their best work; on top of that--the American public has been hyped into believing that you need to fun to the Medical Industry for everything. That's broken the system they were getting so fat off of; Diabetes, for instance can be cured with Naturopathic healing measures, and lifestyle change.

And if you listened to the address, he admitted that it's been unpopular with Republicans and if they could come up with something better, fine, let's hear it. The current status quo is a disaster. I live in France right now, and we get it free up to 80% but have to still pay 20% unless we have insurance, so no, nothing is free. But come ON. At least admit something is wrong.

Internet education should also be tops as well.In other words by the time a student enters high school ,they should know how a protocol suite works.Know how information travels and how people exploit various systems.When an enemy knows your watching they will be less inclined to attack.In other words learn the internet you use everyday.

Within 10 years much can be accomplished by America when its people are focused.Clean energy, rapid internet tech advances ,and continued exploration of our solar system.Multiple frontiers of innovations including fusion,electrical,and natural gas.Space mining isnt far either.But all of this requires a solid foundation at the elementary school level.Reward teachers who actually teach and not those with an axe to grind.
