No I rather have gearbox from hewland, xtrac or for closeratio I buy from quaife. In fact my MPS carries quaife LSD. I think company is too new and has not been to major races such as f1 le mans and daytona. Also dog does ware faster than synchromesh and you need to match the rev to prevent ware on dog clutch.
Their to damn expensive though. 10k for a 1st to 6th dogbox is just ridiculous. That's way more then my friends turbo kit in his STi and more then the cylinder heads for my dads WRX. I want a Dogbox but not at 10k
@BBSroll Are you wanting that tranny for a daily driver or a pure race car? Reason I ask is that you really don't need a dog box for street use in fact I strongly advise you to NOT get one for street use. I have 2 friends with a PPG dog box and it is a bitch to drive on the street even after you get accustomed to it. I have PPG syncro set up on my car and they rock out every day with 500whp and 490wtq on an 03 WRX. Odds are you don't need a dog box.
i wish they would b in 1000-3000 price range, not everybody can affordem at those skaa-haa prices. i understand the time and craftsmanship it takes but still thought ..it be cool if i can afford 1 set.
cant you make it so you can change from rwd to awd with the touch of a swicth because i want to do that to my car without all the handels like other cars
@FxPxSxHuStLa2 yea u can i say this vid on youtube were this guy had a r33 gtr and he had a switch in his car that changes from awd to rwd but i dont know how much it would cost though
Well i guess without the synchos, the gearbox would go instantly to the engine speed (ex. 8k to 6k) without lag. That what i get from it. except those downshift would be pretty rough...

I call straight cut gears are stronger bullshit. Helical gears are stronger because of the increase of contact surface area. More stress can be played without localizing at an area. I am not sure how does play it in a auto gearbox. In gear, helical is much stronger.
I believe I am actually wrong about the shearing thing - wasn't really thinking when I posted. But certainly, the bearing load is an issue, especially with more extreme torque levels.
Regardless of the theories - Straight-cut gearsets have been race-proven to be vastly stronger than helical. Ask any motorsport expert. Helical gearsets cause angular loads on the gear, the transmission shafts and bearings beacuse of the contact angle. They break. Simple.
Dude I must admit I dont know any latin, but I also dont know any real race or rally cars that run helical gears, because they break faster and easier than straight-cut - thats also fact. Its also why straight-cuts and dog-boxes are sold as upgrades, rather than downgrades to ur drivetrain....
I'm thinking of getting a 6sp gear set for when i start a rb30/26 for when the 96' up r33 GTR V Specs get 15 years old and can be bought here. But a Getrag 6sp gear box is arround $3000 and a 6sp dog box is $11,000 and thats a huge loss from a failure considering guys are running arround in 800hp r34's every day and taking them to the track/strip with no real problem, except they occasionally blow with 700-1000awhp with 285 semi slicks allround doing 6000rpm(?) launches.
not sure why it happened...bad batch of gears maybe.ppg basically replaced them, they'd wanna to cause after i forked out that much coin for them i kinda expected them to last slightly longer than 6 days...
I am probably goin to grab a set of these by the end of 08 at the latest...
I am wondering if going 1,2 straight and 3,4 helical would be good...or all helical...I would love to hear the whine...but probably only for a few days...I would probably get annoyed by then.
No one has full helical do they? I never heard/saw one online...most do straight cut...
If you all want to make some real cash, make gears for hondas, eg 92 to 96 prelude vtec, 99 to 2001 integra gsr, and type R, acura integra rsx type s and the 97 to 20001 prelude and civic type r b16 tranny.
True, a soft (weak) clutch will allow one to run higher power levels, but will not take the abuse and will over heat limiting drivability in harsh driving like drag racing.. I had issues with my clutch giving up on me at an event killing my finals chances..
I can dump the clutch with no issues with over 400whp.. I even dumped the clutch bouncing off the rev limiter to "test" the strength of the gearset. The only tip that I have for PPG is to shift hard and fast. For a stock gearset preload so to limit shock loading the gearset, that's what breaks gears.

What does it mean by 'only positive changes'? You can only go up in gears and stay in Neutral as you slow down?
gamesindians1992 2 years ago
positive gear changes as in a firm shift not a lazy slow gear selection
rossboss124 2 years ago
"Positive changes" means shifting up. You still have to use the clutch on downshifts. At least that's what I would assume.

Yes, helical gears have a greater surface area to transfer power, but they are more prone to shearing, and place more stress on the bearings.
Altmaster 2 years ago
I am not too sure about the shearing part but you are right on placing more bearing stress.

I'm just pointing out that, ceteris paribus, they're stronger than straight-cut gears, and that's not theory, it's fact.
Of course, thrust loads and frictional losses make them a poorer choice for race applications.

I wonder how much a straightcut gear set for a Getrag 260 would run me.
unluckykid256932 2 years ago
if you have a WRX and you are tuning it I would give PPG a Call, your stock box will break. not it might, It is going to break!!!
seroyer2 3 years ago
i can vouch for that...had it tuned putting down 328awhp in a 99rs transmission...not even a month later...POP!!!...bye bye 2nd gear
Cbgrandtheftauto 3 years ago
ya A STi box will fix that prob, but there expensive not that a PPG box would be cheaper.
seroyer2 3 years ago
yea..its a toss up now of what to do...ppg or full STi driveline

Gay? Why would you call PPG gay? They are strong and very streetable for a dog box. Even the Helical setup is stronger then STI.

im saying its not much in regards to the gearbox. If u have a shit clutch even the stock gearbox can take that.
