TV brainwashed people of today see the tough, fast draw gun play, and little else. To the men who actually lived in the Old West, being fast on the draw was simply a skill needed to survive. Most of them were much more interested in being well-educated. To learn to speak Latin or French, to study the Arts was higher on the list to them than being a gunfighter. Being educated and refined gentlemen was uppermost on their minds. Think not? Read their early biographies...
"live wyatt, live for me." the fact that Val Kilmer did not receive an Oscar for this movie is for sure one of the biggest travesties in Hollywood history.
it is hands down, the greatest bit of acting I have seen in this industry.
Doc is THE MAN! Awesome friend to Wyatt too. Since he goes to kill Ringo because he knows Wyatt doesn't stand a chance. Val Kilmers best performance for sure. Watching other westerns with "Doc" being portrayed by someone else, all you can say is....."thats not Doc."
@BigJimGrizzly -- I think Doc was also hoping to get a quick death out of fighting Ringo. You notice after he shot him the first time, he put his gun away, and is trying to coax him into shooting him. He knew what was coming wouldn't be pleasant, so he wanted it over fast.
You didn't get them all, especially my favorite scene with Wyatt right before Holliday's gunfight with Ringo. Wyatt is talking to Doc about how to defeat Ringo when Doc tells him, " A man like Ringo has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it. " Then he also tells Wyatt Ringo needs revenge for being born. Incredible scene!
I think someone forgot to tell Val Kilmer he was in a mediocre movie. He turns in a hell of a performance here.

Also, the best exchange of the movie:
Ringo: I was just fooling about.
Doc:........I wasn't.

Kilmer will never give a better performance than he gave in this film...but you can say that about almost any other actor around.

How about a little love for Michael Biehn's Johnny Ringo? A great villain for Doc to play against!

This was the best acting that I have seen from Val Kilmer so far. I hope I can see a movie some time where he does as well as this again.

Too bad he didn't get it in the end. RIP Doc.
