I had worked with a graduate from VMI some time ago and he was the most rude, arrogant and insulting person I ever knew. He certainly DID NOT bring honor to this school, and certainly hope others coming from this school are trained better than that, but also how to operate in the buisness world if they don't go into the armed services.
I'm sorry to hear that but thank you for your understanding. Not everyone that manages to make it out of here is the perfect reflection of what we try to do here, but I guess it's just like any other organization in that respect. The vast majority of graduates are respectful and overall great "team players." There are some that don't ever grasp the Brother Rat spirit, sense of duty, respect, or integrity and I think you ran into one of those rare few.
I think it is the Citadel that needs to experience the Ratline. We have a Citadel Alum that is on the staff here, he's ashamed of his school nowadays. I never understood why until I visited the Citadel myself. He was on the Summerall Guards, maybe his expectations are too high. Either way I think VMI and The Citadel are side by side in the challenges of modern society and keeping with tradition in military schools.
No, you do not need to commission and serve in the military at all. Military service is optional, the Citizen Soldier model is the main theme behind VMI and it's usually about half and half with graduates going in the military and civilian sector. Great question!
Out of curiosity, do you even know what you are asking? You are going to a military school but don't want to get into the military after you graduate? doesn't make any sense to me.
There is a BIG difference between joining the military and going to a military school. For one you might want to gain the discipline you get from a school like VMI, but don't want to risk your life as you possible would in the military. In VMI you study, graduate, and find a job. If you join the military, that IS your job. So yes marick626 there is a difference, think before you talk.
Not true. At VMI you can choose to either go in the military or not. If you do choose to serve, then it'll depend on your branch. If we do choose to serve we must serve eight years after graduation. A minimum of 4 years Active, then the last 4 can be Active, Reserve, or National Guard (Army Only), or Air National Guard (Air Force Only).
There are a lot of people here that are not commissioning because of the experience and because of the Alum network for job hunting.
I agree, I am an out of state Cadet and it is not cheap. The only way I was able to come here was because of my Army ROTC scholarship. ROTC scholarships, grants, and loans are really the only option for out of state Cadets unless you have the money to pay out of pocket for it. I can help you if you are interested in getting a scholarship or grant, just message me.
I had a 3.73 cum. GPA, but that doesn't mean you have to. My roommate had a 2.0 cum. GPA in high school, but he made up for it with his athletic activities and clubs he was part of. VMI isn't interested in GPA as much as they are interested in "the whole picutre." They want well-rounded individuals with leadership position experience (ex: school club leadership), community involvement, decent grades, and preferably (but not required) athletic involvement of some kind.
It is rough in the beginning, we don't try to hide it. If you want, I can send you a message with more information from my first-hand experience. My first year at VMI was the best (and most challenging) year of my life. I do not regret going to VMI at all, and I would love to tell you more about it if you would like.
Yeah man (or girl), if you don't mind sending me more information, i tried looking at the website and i didn't really get the information i wanted. At the moment i am in High school in Maryland and possibly moving to Virginia so i can get a cheaper fee. Currently taking AFJROTC there and possibly doing NROTC if i get a chance to join. So how do i actually get to this college? do i have to have straight A's in high school? My grades aren't the best but there far more decent then everyone else.
Rat Mass of 2013 hopefully.

What year was she? I probably know her if she graduated recently. The Institute does not have a lot of females, it's not hard to know all of them.
