can you believe that there is this idiot that thinks jeff loomis plays harder material than shawn? im not knocking on loomis, he is amazing, but lane shits all over loomis in the technical department. R.I.P. Shawn Lane.
Honestly, does he expect ANYBODY to be able to play this? Anyone who can watch this video, understand it and have the chops to pull off these digit-liquefying licks is a CHAMP in my book.
There is a giant list of quotes from other professional guitarists about Shawn, that was one of them. Buckethead invented finger nubbing thanks to Shawn imitating Nancarrow. Buckethead idolized Shawn, there is no reason to think that is a fake quote.
I watched this in high quality and with the greater sound quality you can really hear how freakish clean he plays this shit. It isn't even funny because some of these licks are not only fast but also got real odd picking patterns and you get no clue how to do it whatsoever.... To play this lick at slow tempos is hard enough...
@hsoux33 Thats what REALLY fucked me up......LOL, i got the TAB to some of this stuff, and half way thru my fingers hurt,............and i was just learning the POSITIONS!!.......LOL, there freakishly hard finger AND picking patterns, your fingers have to be like machanical Pistons to be that accurate..............NEVER MIND reapeating that shit flawlessly everytime..............IMPOSSIBLE, this guy is the big dark secret of every pro guitarist out there, you never hear almost ANYONE mention him
@vetmusician But your fingers will eventually get used too these kind of stretching when you practice it slowly and relaxed. But first time i tried out these Lane things my hand hurt so badly, but it's getting better with time.
I will never be able to play any close to this mans ability, but at least I learnt something trying.
For that guy who keeps putting out the "This guitar player VS that guitar player" You could just make a new series called "Shawn Lane stomps the crap out of this guitar player".
That guy was just ridiculously good. When he was playing that augmented lick at the end - damn I don't even have the range to play this. It doesn't even look as if his hands were huge. But his range obviously was insane.
@therag I read somewhere that he used a Fender Bluesmaster? But he often used 4 amps... Shawn liked quadraphonic effects, particularly with delay apparently ;)
@ExtremeBogom hmm kinda. so it sounds to me like you have your fingers in a diminnished shape, play the middle, the high note the root, and then play the middle, go down half a step, and play the root again. and then he's doing that each string going down, with different chord shapes, like dim, aug, or some chromatic stuff at the beginning. is that right?
@charvinaldo AHH DONT EVEN TRY, I GAVE IT A GOOD SHOT AND IM PRETTY GOOD AT PICKIN STUFF UP, AND I HAVE COME TO THE SIMPLE CONCLUSION, OOPS SORRY BOUT THE CAPS, only shawn lane can play shawn lane, seen folks do vai, to hendrix, to dimeola and so on...even guthrie govan,,but no one has really successfully covered shawn lane, i just dont think it can be done..would love to see it though:)
@scottfree6 basically true. Have you heard of Tosin Abasi though? of course just because you CAN cover someone doesn't mean that person isn't that good. Tosin Abasi's arrpegios are radically different from Shawn's, but really interesting, not to mention challenging! Pretty much any song by animals as leaders (Tosin's Band) is incredible, but for starters try On Impulse, Point to Point, and maybe Tempting Time or Wave of Babies for some freaking ridiculous arrpegios. Shawn#1, Tosin#2 4 hard arps
Nah, there are people with much harder arpeggios than Tosin. Marshall Harrison, Jeff Loomis, Jason Becker etc. his argpeggios are very challenging, but I wouldn't put them anywhere near that high. Shawn doesn't actually use arpeggios that much either from what I understand. They are just ludicrously fast and technical runs covering lots of area on the fretboard. Marshall Harrison has the most challenging arps from what I have seen. SWYBRID PICKING FTW!!!
@Fluffypopcicle I haven't heard of marshall harrison, i'll have to check him out. i kinda ran out of characters towards the end so i see it left a wrong message a little bit. No, shawn actaully rarely uses arrpegios. It kinda just comes up in one little spot here or there in a lot of songs. Honestly i like Tosin's arps way more than jeff's or jason's. I LIKE tosin's the most because they are so interesting, especcialy when you deconstruct them. i actually think his are the most complex by far
Tosin's are possibly the most musically complex because he bases them off of unusual and interesting 9th chords and just very interesting chords. Almost all of his his arpeggios are musically interesting and complicated in some way, but as far as how hard they are to play I find Miles of Machines and Serrana to be more difficult than anything Tosin has done. I like Tosin's the best right now though.
@Fluffypopcicle and yeah, tosin has super interesting chords. looove it. i haven't learned serrana, but i remember learning the intro to miles of machines a while back and i didn't find it THAT hard...idk maybe just different guitarists find different things hard. one thing is for sure though, this marshal dude is a guitar hass. i think due to limmited time right now i might actually focus just on interesting arps combingations of sweep, hybrid, alternate, etc. thanks for your insight! so stoked
You're welcome :) I haven't listened to a full song from Marshall's solo album, but from the snippets available at Amazon . com some songs look good and some songs look mediocre. He IS a total theory freak though lol. I have him to thank for teaching me what real legato is. I always thought it was just not using the pick, but that wouldn't make sense because legato originated as a piano term. You don't use pick to play the piano lol.
Oh, and swybrid picking is a combination of hyrbid picking and sweep picking. I believe it's something that Marshall invented. He uses it quite a bit. It takes a while to realize how much of a genius Marshall is because he has a less than desirable tone and his phrasing is VERY strange, but once you start enjoying him it's hard not to call him one of the greatest guitarists alive right now in terms of technical ability and understanding of theory.
@Fluffypopcicle whoa...just checked some of his stuff out...that was like...ok watching those videos was like a revelation to me. looks like suddenly i've got a ton of brilliant new stuff to be working on! He does have some incredible stuff. I haven't listened to marshall's actual music yet, but i am looking forward to it. i absolutely love tosin and i have a feeling that even if marshall's music is somehow pure aweful, i'll still have a ton to learn from him. i admit it, you are right about mar
@scottfree6 oh wow kool bro i'll check it:) and of course totally agreed that just cuz you can cover somebody doesnt mean they are not good or great for that matter..all those guys i mentioned are great. you know back in the days when i was in my teens(uh oh given away my age lol), yngwie was on the rise and like basically it was how fast can you do it and the less people that could match you the better you were lol!of course we know its what notes:) TY for the heads up&the tabs.ROCKON BROTHER!
Holy shit, that augmented intervel stretch is instence! I can only just pick up my speed with the 3 fingered diminished interval lick, but the augmented exercise is just too much 0_______0
I can easily see Yngwie watching one of these Shawn Lane videos, than going to a dark corner haha. (No disrespect to Yngwie, he is a great player but he can act pretty cocky about his playing!)
@joeylodes You may as well ask what's with all this distortion. Who cares? It's the sound he likes. Some poeple have lots of effects some use only an acoustic guitar.
Work around with it, work it up. See if if you can't make somethin cool out of it. Maybe like an augmented plus a 7 or something. Idk. being able to use something like that is cool.
@hldemi I'm only 1.90, but I have really big hands, long fingers, and hyper-mobile limbs, which means I can bend my arms, legs, fingers, toes, skin etc. further than normal. That being said, I find it hard to move aroud with a stretch that big, but I can still move around with stretches almost as big.
First of all, when a preson says"Long Live" they referring to a death...I DO suppose that "Shawn Lane Lives!" might have been more fitting...but how would you know?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Guitfiddlejase wow another American pig who thinks his language is so important that everyone should speak it flawlessly! I speak so many languages that your little brain could never handle ;-)
Also, I shall now explay the meaning of "Long live":
It means that you wish that that person will live a long time, right?
It sounds more like you are the "pig" who thinks that a person is'nt allowed to say ANYTHING IN ANY LANGUAGE without being called an idiot....I thought this comment feed was about Shawn Lane-not you and whatever the FUCK you think correct protocol is....
Technically he'd be one of the best ever, if not the best...

charvinaldo 1 year ago 14
@charvinaldo
It's a pattern wherein you go up a bit, then down a bit more, then up a bit within a scale/pattern.
Kind of think of it like this: Go up 1 note, then down 2 notes, up 1 note, down 2 notes, up 1 note, down 2 notes etc.
You end up gradually going down/descending to the finish.
When he goes back up, this sequence is just reversed.
Hope that helps?

Work around with it, work it up. See if if you can't make somethin cool out of it. Maybe like an augmented plus a 7 or something. Idk. being able to use something like that is cool.

yeah right 12-24 how tall are you 2,20 ?
hldemi 1 year ago
@hldemi I'm only 1.90, but I have really big hands, long fingers, and hyper-mobile limbs, which means I can bend my arms, legs, fingers, toes, skin etc. further than normal. That being said, I find it hard to move aroud with a stretch that big, but I can still move around with stretches almost as big.
Emil315 1 year ago
@Emil315 Maybe but its still hard to believe . Where you can get from 5 ?
hldemi 1 year ago
12, but if I really stretch it, I get to 13.

If the world were to end unless someone today could reproduce that guitar work, I would get beers and have a bbq because we would all die.

First of all, when a preson says"Long Live" they referring to a death...I DO suppose that "Shawn Lane Lives!" might have been more fitting...but how would you know?
You can't even spell "Passed" correctly.

@Guitfiddlejase wow another American pig who thinks his language is so important that everyone should speak it flawlessly! I speak so many languages that your little brain could never handle ;-)
Also, I shall now explay the meaning of "Long live":
It means that you wish that that person will live a long time, right?
Idiot.
Aquaboy99 2 years ago
It sounds more like you are the "pig" who thinks that a person is'nt allowed to say ANYTHING IN ANY LANGUAGE without being called an idiot....I thought this comment feed was about Shawn Lane-not you and whatever the FUCK you think correct protocol is....
idiot.
