People, they might have lost some of the magic here and sure it was sad, being close to the end of such a wonderful ride ..but these two sing beautifully together, use the present not the past..here I see the magic of great entertainers...you gotta love em
I saw Jerry Lewis play the Devil in a production of Damn Yankees & his singing is much nicer when he's not affecting that falsetto or whatever you'd call it.
its so sad thinking about the good taht they had and now that Jerry is so old and dean is no more here...... so happy we can have these clips to remember
That's so beautiful and sad at the same time! I love to hear them singing it together, although it must has been such hard for them! Oh... It made me cry. I Love Dino and Jerry.
I just watched all of these in a row and realized that i have one whole show and this is part of it. I dont think any1 has it up so i am going to put up mine-4 the love of the team-jerry& dean
Does anybody know if there is the video of the colgate comedy hour sketch with the huge milk shake in the ice cream parlour somewhere here on youtube???
Dean and jerry are the best its jst sad wen they split in an inteview i saw with jerry he was alomst in tears cuz of the way the producers treated dean ppl underestimated dean's comic ability and they thought he was jst an ok singer deam was a great singer
They had the kind of love for each other that most marriage partners will never had. That kind of love comes once in a lifetime. The producers & directors had a goldmine & all they managed to do was divide the best team in show business history. But least they didn't divide their love for one another.
There's a rather ironic look to the side that Lewis gives to the side at 0:50 when they sing "We Got Each Other." Or so it seems to me. By this time (November 1955), the fan magazines were guessing on whether they'd break up. (Some guessed they'd stay together. Reason: there was so much at stake financially that they'd have to remain a team. Wishful thinking?) In light of that, the choice of song here is like an answer to the break-up rumors.
It was ironic that Martin and Lewis would sing "We Got Each Other" when there were many rumors going around that they would break up. At 0:50, Lewis appears to give a side look that emphasizes the irony. It might seem that way just to me, and I might be completely off base. Just one person's opinion.
This CCH clip is (I think) the third-to-last filmed performance of Martin and Lewis. At this time (November 1955) they would have already completed their third-to-last film, "Artists and Models" (released in December). So, then there was this CCH followed by their final two films, "Pardners" (filmed in very early 1956) and "Hollywood or Bust" (filmed in the spring of 1956). That would have been it for filmed performances. I stand corrected if anyone has better info.
"...Each both together." The best they've ever done. Yet so heartbreaking. They will always, always be remembered in our hearts. M and L = Love. The best men ever!
So sad. They look so wore out in this clip. I wish they wouldn't have let outside things tear them apart. I just read 'Dean and Me' and it was such an eye opener! It is such a personal book.
Air date for this show was November 13, 1955, according to a website. They last performed as a team, if I'm not mistaken, on July 24, 1956.
Interesting to me that, as the team was coming apart, they'd sing "Each both together" here, and "You and me, we're going to be partners" in the movie "Pardners." As if to negate the press stories that reported an imminent breakup.
This was on the Colgate Comedy Hour (the second-to-last CCH, and the last Martin and Lewis would do). Guests were Mike Mazurki and Margaret Dumont. Like one of the commenters here, I don't know whether M&L appeared on TV together again as a team. They appeared solo (clips on YouTube): Martin on "Dinah Shore" around April 1956 and Lewis on "What's My Line" two nights before M&L's last performance as a team July 24.
This performance was definitely not from one of their movies.
I love these boys so much, it makes me feel so very sad to think that whilst singing a song about friendship and how they have each other, they're apparently fighting. It is so incredibly heartbreaking that a relationship of two people who obviously loved each other a great deal, could come to an end the way it did. It is nice that things were finally sorted before Dean passed. <3x
Jeez. They only made eye contact once the whole time. Every time Jerry looks at Dean or vice versa the other is looking away. It's sad after watching so many clips where they seem to be communicating silently even while they do a skit.
They were simply amazing. I just got done reading Jerry's book "Dean and Me (A love Story)" It's incredible. I actually felt as if I knew the two of them after reading that book...such a personal book...It's like i was reading Jerry's diary or something...lol. I respected them both before...but now-to a whole new level.
What a sweet song. It breaks my heart to know that they were fighting. I'm just glad they became friends again. They were absolutely incredible. There will never be anyone like them ever again. They were something special.
que penaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...la cara de Jerry lo dice todo..Jerry's eyes and Dean's eyes they look really sad!!!!!!!
"THE COLGATE VARIETY HOUR" (formerly "THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR") was cancelled at the end of 1955. I don't know if Dean & Jerry appeared in one or two more specials for NBC before they broke up for good in July of '56......
I think you could see the private tension. They didn't perform with that same magic that they weren't fighting. What made them a cut above was how they played to each other and forgot the audience. I love Jerry and Lewis. They were great!
Wow, thanks very much. This one I hadn't seen. Jerry was touring in Damn Yankees in Denver on December 25, 1995 when new came of Dean's death. They were two pros right to the very end. As Jerry has said so often, no one could see the private tension of the act on stage.
It's amazing how much Jerry changed on this show he really rounded out (espcially in the face over) the years and his voice changed too. The first few colgates he looks nearly unrecognizeable from his solo movies... more jerky I guess...but in this he looks ready for the Delicate Delinquent. Love ya Jer!
it upsets me that they had to break up. but those things happen
but on a brighter side...jerry looks like he gained alittle weight; looks good on him. dean looks great as usual. & jerry`s voice is hot when he says "but after the fussing theirs always us" i love it. nice video
And after they sang this, they probably headed right offstage in different directions. They could barely stand the sight of each other the last couple of years before they broke up.
Was Dean supposed to say something in place of "Jerky." From the look Jerry shoots to Dean and Dean's eyes seem to suggest that he was. What was it supposed to be then?
Thanks. I was using my really slow connection at home and only got to that part and then realized it after the clip loaded all the way. Thanks though for being helpful.
It is crushing. These two were the best of friends for ten years and a great act as well. They certainly did have that x-factor, which I think was just true friendship. I cried through a few of the chapters in Dean and Me. It's like you realize, as is always said, that all great things must come to an end, but why couldn't it have happened on much friendlier terms? Sometimes it seems that listening to these songs that they want to repair things but they know that they can't.
I totally agree with what you said. They did have that magic that you do not see today and I think it was their friendship too. You do not see acts like Martin and Lewis anymore and it breaks my heart everytime I watch a clip/movie/whatever of them. I hate it had to end on such rocky termrs
omg *tear* im not even jokin wow i never really stopped and listen to it...plus probably i never understood that much until i read the dean & me book wow great clip mel
I know! It's such a sad clip! :( They sang a few of these..."buddy-ish" type songs on their last few episodes together, like, as if, they were trying to reassure everyone that their relationship was ok I guess??? but I don't know. It's crushing.
