  • As a teen. I was intrigued by the homo-erotic intensity music arrangement and the lyrics of this song.

  • Most underrated Elton John song...who agrees?

  • An anthem for those of us who knew we would never "cut it". How could we not embrace this song? Fathers and Mothers who were humiliated by us. We were an embarrassment to relatives. Love this song. More than I can say.

  • Elton in the 70's was a hit machine !!

Like the Beatles, the greatest band of all time, the albums had no fillers.

Todays music is a joke !!

  • This is absolutely one of the coolest songs ever written. I love Davey Johnston's guitar work on this song. Amazing ~ simplistic ~ nice execution of slap back reverb. Too early for a Rev 7 though, right?

  • great song!

  • Raised to be a lady by the golden rule

Alice was the spawn of a public school

With a double barrel name in the back of her brain

And a simple case of Momma-doesn't-love-me blues

Reality it seems was just a dream

She couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene

But what do you expect from a chick who's just sixteen

And hey, hey, hey, you know what I mean

  • chorus All the young girls love Alice Tender young Alice they say Come over and see me Come over and please me Alice it's my turn today All the young girls love Alice Tender young Alice they say If I give you my number Will you promise to call me Wait 'til my husband's away
  • Poor little darling with a chip out of her heart

It's like acting in a movie when you got the wrong part

Getting your kicks in another girl's bed

And it was only last Tuesday they found you in the subway dead

And who could you call your friends down in Soho

One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go

And what do you expect from a sixteen year old yo-yo

And hey, hey, hey, oh don't you know

  • Huge cut on rock radio back in the day.

  • ok, even back in the 70s i always wondered why EJ used this pic, i mean come on, his butt looks more packed with depends that my grandmother ever wore. why?

  • one of my all time fav elton songs, not for the lyrics, but for the... oh fuck how do i say it? For the... boom that elton gave his songs in the early years. Oh god how i miss the boom he gave music when he was young.

  • this is such a good song. i think it sucks that some people dont like this song just because its about a gay girl. i personaly dont care, its just great art

  • pure gold

  • Elton John is the rock version of the butt bandit Liberace.....

  • Great tune!!! One of my favorite from Elton!!!

  • Great tune!!! One of my favorite from Elton!!!

  • One of my all time favorite songs of all time!!! I can listen to this song non-stop for hours at a time.

  • i was 12

  • daniel brou

  • ELTONS GREATEST WORK!!!!!

  • It's Elton...Just dig it!

  • No comments !!!

  • QUITE SIMPLY THIS ALBUM IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

  • Is it wierd that I sing this song when I'm angry?

  • It is about a lesbian, but more deeply it's about soul-crushing desperation with a young lesbian as the protagonist.

  • YUCKKKKK LESBIANS....i like the beat...but not the lyrics!!!

  • @KahaluuMartyMom 2/10 for trolling effort.

  • @KahaluuMartyMom Do you have a problem with lesbians?

  • @KahaluuMartyMom I have a lot in common with lesbians!

  • Before the times..Elton brought the truth out!

  • @TaosZenShaman Honey, he sucked dick back in the day, too. His dick sucking didn't ever change the caliber of his music. Yes, his music doesn't rock as much these days, but he's been making music for decades. One must cut the man some slack when he made masterpieces like this one.

  • I bought two copies of this album when I was 15, so I could stack up all four of them on my record player and listen to every song without having to flip an album over......Life was soooooo good, back then.

  • @dorothysue1 Hell, yeah!

  • @dorothysue1 i just got my old audio tec speakers back, first album I ever listened to was Yellow brick road. god I am in heaven. they rock he is ..................the best no words.

  • It doesn't get much better than that!

  • "She couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene....but what do you expect from a chick who's just sixteen?".....Frickin' fab!

  • His band was totally underated...never got the recoginition they deserved....DEE was tight on lead....

  • @jxrxmx311 Exactly. I gotta say I love that 'leslie speaker' sound Davey Johnstone uses!

  • So catchy!

  • It sits with Fragile,LZ2,The White Album&Lamb Lies Down.Notice the 5 year Corridor.Yes those were great tokin' times.

  • I got this album when I was 11...been a lifelong Elton fan, but this album is timeless

  • All of the stars you know today were unknown at once.I promise

you they went through this too and look at carol o'conner. He was

older when he was Archie Bunker in all in the Family. He had a very

successful run, that one and in the heat of the night.Never fool yourself to believe you can't because you can at any age no matter where your from

  • Almost every song on this LP is a CLASSIC!! Still have it, scratches and all. Now I also have ait on cassette ans cd. Just have to pull ,out the old LP once in a while for "Old times sake". Saw him in concert 3 times!!! Excellent show every time !!!

  • E John made me feel real and validated--tho i didnt "get"this song when I, myself, was young--when this album debuted (sp?)

I was like why, what, and hmm(???)

Now its so easy to love and feel--wow poor, lucky Alice--at same time--and--its weird being weird looking for the other weird "right for you" people with weird feelings happening... But wonderful

  • i got this album in 74,my first of hundreds from columbia house records...allthough thanks to my older brother,i was an ej fan since 70....im 50 now but had this album wore out by the end of 74.went and got anouther.....great duo ....GREAT ALBUM

  • I love this album too. One his best ever.

Heard Elton wrote all the music to Taupins' lyrics in 3 days while in Jamaica.

Don't know if that's true or not, but what I heard years ago.

  • Thanks!

  • One of Elton`s most underrated songs, but to me, this is one hell of a classic

  • @jhamler....like some of your observations...I always considered Geddy-Alex-Neil of RUSH to be THE Trio....bar none. But, just my humble opinion. Sir Elton has had some quality musicians fo sho. David Bowie was much the same as far as recruiting the best musicians for in studio and live gigs as well.

  • @TheStuport Much as anything else, infrastructure is failing at the moment. My humble opinion as well. "Al the young girls love Alice". Good music surfaces once in a while. Not of late I fear.

  • my girlfreind has now told me that she enjoys having sex with another girl. She said if I could find one we can have a threesome . She wasn't even born when this album came out .I should let her hear this and rember they found Alice dead in a subway last thursday!!

  • @frank02111

    Go for it!!

  • @frank02111 no... no, no, no, no, no... you should get freaky, like yesterday... the more the meatier...

  • This “HAS” to be ranked as one of the top rock albums ever cut! Absolutely filled with great great tunes....I still have the original double album in vinyl and always will!

  • @sb2244 AGREED!!! I just ordered it on CD!! FABULOUS!!! And so many of these songs are missing from the Greatest Hits!!! Strange huh?

  • @sb2244 thats why it is :D

  • Thanks E.J.!!!

  • Elton could really rock huh?

  • Ray Cooper!

  • All the YOUNG GIRLS LOVE ALICE.

  • the heaviest song Elton ever did

  • Comment removed

  • I dunno what it is, but the bassline is killer here

  • @jhamler1 Dee Murray is a VERY underappreciated bass player. When it comes to bass and drums, I'd put Dee and Nigel right up there with John & Keith, John & Roger, and Adam & Larry.

  • @saucersauce John and Keith (The Who) yes, John and Roger (of Queen, I presume?) perhaps, but Adam and Larry (U2) are generally considered the worst rhythm section in the history of rock and roll. By worst, I'm only talking about technical skill and creativity. They can obviously do their jobs. But not much more. PANTERA is probably too heavy for your taste, but THAT was a tight rhythm section. Sting and Stewart were pretty good... We could go on forever, but Elton had a great band.

  • @jhamler1 it's the interaction with the stuttering beat on the bass drum. Something about it extremely catchy

  • gary pepper

  • MUY BUENA DE LAS MEJORES FROM YOUTUBE.......la honorable sociedad

  • Love this song and Yellow Brick Road is a great album.!!

  • Wow! This song brings back so many memories!! I realized from the first time I heard Alice it was about girls exploring girls.

  • Funny how most people don't know this is about a young Lesbian.....great song though

  • @AMXhotrod people dont know that? really? how do you not?? well..i guess i know a lot of people who dont listen to lyrics. kinda scary when you think about it. what ideas do you get in your head without knowing? i always try to know what i'm hearing. always been a lyric junkie, tryin to figure out the mumbles

  • @GordosMama1111 Gotta remember that we're talking 35 years ago, when pretty much nobody came out and the enviroment was much more hostile towards gays. That and the fact 35 years ago I was only 15 and pretty naive to the world. :-)

  • @AMXhotrod Define "most people". How could anyone not know?

  • @lsmjan Ummm......cause a lot of us were 10 when this came out and "Gay" was not a subject talked about out loud.

  • @AMXhotrod It seems pretty obvious, lol :P

  • @AMXhotrod I don't get how thats funny?

  • @Boredonthejob Poor choice of words on my part, how about odd.

  • Davey Johnstones finest moment

  • this song has a tragic sound to it?did they find her dead of a heroin overdose?

  • So Striking.

  • The Mob Wives song.

  • My late Dad had this album on vinyl, i had it on cassette, must get it again on CD

  • !974 in my parent's basement cranking this out of a RCA dual cabinet stereo record player with tube amp. Thanks Mom for letting me dig it so much and so often.

  • @slmaness i still use a tube pre-amp, McIntosh

  • !974 in my parent's basement cranking this out of a RCA dual cabinet stereo record player with tube amp. Thanks Mom for letting me dig it so much and so often.

  • PLAY ALL NIGHT ELTON!!!

  • a brilliant double album, that was almost impossible to follow.

so many great songs, that live in the memory for all time.

i have worn out four of the original record albums, and countless tapes, now i have all of his stuff on CD.

This will be getting another airing i think!

  • Alice dear,my husbands not home......Eltie was way ahead of his time. This came out my Jr.year of High school Daze!! And we danced to each and every song every chance we had.And still do so....I've had this on vinyl,8track,cassett and CD.THE best..

  • i am 50 now but when i was a kid I got my mum to buy me neil diamonds velvet gloves and spit (sunday sun, modern day version of love etc) i thought that was the best album i heard until i got this.

It just blew my mind i have never ever got sick of this album it is an absolute classic

  • Used to turn on the black light and strobe light with the velvet black light posters hanging and crack this up ! 1975. Those were the days !

  • I may be a metal head but jesus elton john is fantastic. It's rock n' rollers like him that made metal.

  • I'm not a huge fan of Elton, but I think I'm going to have to buy this album.

  • 3 young girls Don't love Alice

  • This surely was done during his best years...and this album was/is a classic and done when singers didn't just put one song on the record so they could sell the album. More than a bit ahead of its time considering the content. This and 4 Way Street by CSN & Y and Frampton Live were THE double albums of the time, oh and lets not forget KISS LIVE...the music today just can't compare....just my opinion..

  • @dragor56 You forgot Physical Graffiti.

  • @dragor56 hey I found me that first KISS LIVE double album in good conditionbut I have no record player :(

  • A life-changing album. I was off to college in 1974 when a friend sent me a cassette tape copy of the vinyl (I still have it) - and my whole view of pop music took a diametric turn...

As Sgt. Pepper is to the Beatles, so Yellow Brick Road is to Elton and Bernie.

  • argueably the BEST album in R&R history?!!!!!!! My first LP I ever owned given to me by my beloved brother along with a tambourine on my 13th Christmas. My M&D also gave me my first stereo system that year(which was equipped with a genuine TURNTABLE kiddies!!) Know what a 'turntable' is?! LOL! My 16 yo daughter had NO IDEA until I educated her:) SCANDALOUS SONG BTW! My mother was appalled! Which of course made the record all the more appealing to me. Then came AC/DC's 'Highway to Hell'! lol

  • A Must have album if you love great songs

  • This song is so sexy......

  • one of the best of that era , don't make them like that anymore

  • The musicianship on this song and this album is simply breathtaking. Certainly one of the the best rock bassists in history anchors all these songs as well of course the sublime melodies and lyrics. Elton John is a true genius. What an album.

  • @blunt1

here's to bass players who do it right!

  • @blunt1 couldn't agree more. thank you for saying that about Dee. He's not appreciated enough.

  • For Alice Kay... (Thanks for posting)

  • Best song the the album.

  • It's a great song!!!

  • This is a look into the gay lifestyle of England through the eyes and lyrics of Bernie Taupin, Elton's songwriting partner. He made up the tragic story of a young lesbian who died in the streets.

  • if I give you my number will you promise to call me????

  • A true inovator....Ahead of his time....This song infers closet married lesbians....

What kind of fringe thinking is that? Shock and awe....In the 70's?

    The man is a genious...

I used to listen to his music and I still do...His lifestyle has zero bearing on my enjoyment of his music....Then or Now...Elton You are great.

  • OOOWWWEEE ... who the "f" i Alice ... "smokie tell the true story" ...haaaa

  • do any old girls love Alice?

  • This was always a fave of mine, sad what happened to poor Alice though.

  • My mother wasn't even born when this album came out but I still love listening to it. It just goes to show you that true talent is timeless!

  • Did you notice that other than "Harmony" this entire double LP had NO male-female love songs?

  • @MegaObserver1 and your point is what? last time I checked, Elton is GAY. The album went gold, so again, I ask, what's your point?

  • i got to see elton in concert for my 30th birhday and it was great!!!!!!!! at the end of the concert we were standing out front waiting on a cab and a limo pulled up rolled the back window down and there he was giving me a thumbs up what great bithday!!

  • @carolroadogmcclakey 24 yrs ago, you got to hear his voice when it was still in its prime before cocaine changed it. John/Taupin were so damn good

  • @carolroadogmcclakey It doesn't get much better than that!

  • this i one of the best album s ever got my first copy at age 16 and am now 50 and still love this album

  • @fatboy82289 And at 50, Im still learning to spell and capitolise !!

  • @fatboy82289

Looking at the comments for the YBR album cuts I am amazed at all the "This was the first album I bought" threads.

Just turned 50 and this was my first album also.

  • @csc115 wasnt my first, but one of my favs

  • @fatboy82289 Me too! although I may have been smidge under 16 - one of lads in the village was an Elton fan - converted me.

  • @fatboy82289 Same here. This was my very Elton John Album I ever bought... Think I was 13 or so. Im 48 now, and this is one of the best songs on the album.

  • @fatboy82289 Could not agree with you more!!! I am 49 years old and this is a classic album that I grew up with on the north side of Chicago. What memories!!! This is what we need much more of today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOLD.

  • @fatboy82289 In one year me too!!! I love this album! A masterpiece then and now.

  • @fatboy82289 another 2 record set like madman a song book was issued

  • yeah, who cares what the 'message is' in this tune..its pure ROCK N ROLL to me

and the world...EJ did this song proud and famous...wow, just listen to the percussion, strings and drums man......pound on EJ

  • sir elton could rock, this song is a gem

  • Never heard this tune before today-but love iut just like all of Elton's early, soulful music!

  • You can't argue with incredible talent. EJ and Bernie Taupin were a combination that might be eclipsed (that's subjective), but IMHO they'll never be topped!

  • Thanks for the response. This is about rock and roll, and not about being, "gay" or being a homophobe. Nobody gave a crap when this came out whether Elton was bi or gay. Those who think about this issue really need to get a life, if you don't like then listen to someone else. When I think about this album I think about my time in high school and growing up in the 70's.

  • rocking beat, and riffs. Lyrics that speak volumes. People it doesn't get better!!!!!!

  • You know I hate the word, "homophobic" in that it is a nonsensical word. But I also don't like people that hate, "them there faggots." Who cares if Elton John is gay, the guy is talented just like Freddie Mercury. Different strokes for different folks. If someone has a problem with Elton John being gay, then listen to someone else, nobody cares about your opinion and that goes for everyone that has to call everyone, "homophobic" who doesn't agree with them.

  • @doggsector I've always loved this song., hell the entire album. And you are quite right in what you've said about Elton's and Freddie's talents. Let the "homophobes" tune in to another channel. Rock on Alice! LOL

  • My favorite Elton John song... yea, I like Elton and I'm so strait I eat corndogs from the side.lol

  • @robinshammer I'm so secure in my sexuality that I eat corndogs any way I damn well please. Eating them from the side makes you sound insecure and homophobic.

  • @moose0drool Yea, you're probibly right, it's just a Texism I picked up in prison that I should probibly do away with in this age of political correctness. The "lol" at the end was meant to signify an attempt at humor and although I'm neither insecure in my sexuality nor homophpbic, I am pedophyleophobic, does that make me a bad person???

  • Utterly brilliant album, Captain Fantastic and Tumbleweed Connection my other favourites. Elton's new album The Union with Leon Russell is excellent!

  • I like like mike

  • I like

  • Wait till my husbands away..!!

  • Probably one of the first songs about preferential sexual experiences - Singing about being Gay was unheard of back then - Amen to Elton for breaking the glass ceiling!!! Love you EJ!!!

  • @er6789er You are wrong this song is about Alice Cooper check it out I am right

  • @johnturd - Uh...whatever you say dude...

  • @johnturd This song is about a sixteen year old girl, named Alice. It has absolutely nothing to do with Alice Cooper.

  • @moose0drool LMAO Right on!

  • @moose0drool That sounds like a line from the Pythons. Ha ha.

  • @er6789er This isn't a very positive song and it sound like she went to women cause men didn't want her.

  • One of the best albums of all time !!!

  • a double barrelled name in the back of her brain........

  • Of everything I've heard thus far, this is probably my favorite song.

  • I had this LP album. It was stolen during one particular party I had in '79. Sigh.

Great party, though. But an even greater album.

  • cool song!!!!!!!

  • could u e-mail me the album as well?

  • @freebyrd0816 yeppp just send me ur email =) i'll get to it as soon as possible since school just started

  • One of the songs that made this a great American Album, all though Elton is British.

  • i love the guitar

  • @alexwaddell08 What effect is that guitar playing, man this shit brings back many memories

  • @monkeywrenchization -The effect is a leslie speaker, usually use for Hammond Organs.

  • The best album of the 70's

  • @manjv5665 check out tumbleweed connection.. that one definitely rivals this one imo

  • Are these people brain dead? Great song!!!

  • in the 70s Elton ruled the charts and for good reason. his range and style was unmatched and still cant be touched today. even by himself. I was a teenager and young adult back then and couldnt wait until the next Elton John album came out. the music is still awesome.

  • @mardalswar Yeah for sure. But unfortunately Elton can't do this stuff today. His register has dropped about 2 octaves

  • One of my all-time favs!

  • I STILL Love this song...the music is AMAZING!!!!!!
