I remember back in the day the rumor was that there was hoverboards and that the only reason they weren't released was because of a "concerned parent movement" supposedly afraid kills would be dying left and right. This of course was long before every house had internet or social media or cellphones. My friends and I all felt like "adults are holding us down" mentality. And of course, it took some time to REALLY find out if hoverboards were real. They weren't :(

@MegaAwsomeStudios, I think around 2015 or so when digital technology advances even further we will see Skateboards become Hoverbaords. We are already seeing regualr tenna shoes become power-laced shoes that Michael J. Fox wore in Back To The Future Part II. Hoverboards are the next generation of Skateboarding technology. I even see flying cars just like the cars in 2015 Hill Valley and the famous Delorean time machine vehicle flying in the film.

has anyone here any clue on how the "cloning effect" is done at 5:45?

Usually the trick is easy to do when the camera is on steadycam but here there is motion in the shot.

I am pretty sure they did not use blue or green screen techniques.

And also there is no stand-in for michael j fox clearly acted both parts in that shot.

Any ideas? It's like the only thing that truely amazed me with this movie.

If you do know, you'll solve a real existential question to my life.

@kiren77 The camera was mounted on an automatic mechanism that repeated exactly the same camera movements, again and again. Michael J. Fox played one of his parts, then the camera was reset, then he came back on the set playing a different part while the camera made the same movements, and so on... then the various parts were spliced together.

After seeing this I realize how much effort they put into this movie.

They had to create about 4 different Hill valleys.

1955 version.

1985 version

1985 alternative version

2015 version

Now that's a lot of time and money put into these, I really overlooked the thought on how much they had to go through to make all of this. Really amazing.

@Boviking Today it would just have been made with CGI. Faster and cheaper, but wouldn't have the same charm as Back to the Future has.

@VeteranOfHell No, the "hoverboards" they used were just wooden props, with the actors suspended from wires. The only way "real hoverboards" can be made is as hovercrafts (with fans and rubber skirts) that can be ridden like skateboards. Look for "gadget show hoverboard" for more information.

uhm actually you could have one, technology exists but surpressed by superpotent energy and oil industry cause the technology im talking about could be used to create free nonpricable energy.
