A little known fact is that Mark Knophler is of Swiss German origin and that if you listen carefully to his playing you hear the influence of traditional Swiss German folk music in the alternating bass picking. He doesn't often talk about his origins because he tried to shed his Swiss accent when living in London but in the Hammersmith Odeon live recording he sings Romeo und Juliet by mistake...check it out!
