Another 13P here (Fire Direction Specialist), Nothing can pass through 6 feet of mud like the MLRS tracked vehicle can during a live fire exercise in the Czech Republic. We used the MLRS to pull out a Tracked Maintenance vehicle from the mud. (I forget what they're called.)
I'm in the army i'm an MLRS fire direction specialist, and i'm here to tell you i looked up the specs for the Smerch and not only is this more powerful its better in EVERY way. The HIMARS are faster more accurate longer range reload much faster and have greater variety in the types of rockets and missiles it is capable of firing.
and smerch can deliver way more ordnance. and only pars sage and atacms can match smerch's range of 70km. and glonass guidance is available too for smerch. and greiter variety of munition?? smerch has AP cluster, guided AT cluster, AT mines, HEAT/he frag, separable he-frag, thermobaric and AP he-frag.
different purpose. smerch is desinged to flatten area of few km^2's at ranges up to 70km. atacms has longer range, but only anti-personell submunition and way smaller war head. one smerch salvo contains about 3000kg of warhead. how much can MRLS deliver to 70km? lets make that AT subs or AT mines too, not AP. AP he-frags fired from smerch have range of 90km
Kind of a small explosion for such a large missile...
