The central debate was not slavery, but popular sovereignty, of which slavery was the most sensitive issue. Abolitionists in the north wanted to tell others in other states what they could and could not do. This violated the fundamental reason for the union of states under the Constitution of the US, and was a potential for elevating the Federal power of government to a new dictatorial status. The South was right; and many if not most in South also opposed slavery. We are all Southerners now.

The civilians supported the south so they were responsible as well.
Show me any evidence that Sherman ordered the murder or women and children in cold blood. Which is different than saying that they died due to stray bullets which would happen in any war.

There are members of the League of the South who have duel membership as SCV members, however as far as I am aware most of them do not use the SCV as a platform to advocate secession from the US (interesting note, since the rise of the Tea Party and a return to proper Conservative ideals for limited government the League's membership has declined a great deal).

Yes WE SCV members do salute the Confederate flag (not pledge allegiance to it) and honor it. The flag was surrendered to the USA and returned without malice BY a US President in 1905. Since then the flag has been unofficially used by Southern men and boys in EVERY AMERICAN WAR since WW1. She showed that every detail given by Norris, about places, names of overseers, dates, jails, and slaves, was perfectly consistant with Lee's own account books, in Lee's handwriting.
Lee's account books also show he regularly sold children, and tortured slaves routinely. He slaves detested him, and rebelled, despite the torture that followed.

@darthroden Yes, the Blair's said during a speech that the dress had been on display at the War Department until " a few years ago". He spoke in like 1908.
Blairs were friends of the Davises --- Varina wrote the famous letter to them, describing the dress and admitting she tried to tell the Union trooops Davis was her mother.
Was the dress photographed? Probably --but they could have photographed any dress.
Varina Davis letter was photographed, and it's online -- go read it.

Once again I HAVE in fact read that letter, and it does not prove a damn thing. Meanwhile nearly every other respectable historian on the War Between the States will tell you that the story is a myth, a creation of Union propaganda written to humiliate Jefferson Davis in the wake of Lincoln's assassination.
If there were such a dress, it would be on display to this day.

Saving the President was of the highest importance.
The letter refutes none of that and does not specifically say she told him to wear a dress...and I'm still waiting for that photo.

To keep slavery going, the South had to stop freedom of speech to WHITES. The Southern was totalitarian. They controlled what preachers could preach, what newspapers could write, what books or pamphlets you could read.
Slavery can exist, ONLY if no one rattles the slaves cages, ONLY if an oppressive government surrounds it.

The fact of the matter is that even though I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans I DO in fact honor the sacrifices and services of men on BOTH SIDES of the war.
I respect AMERICAN VETERANS and Confederate servicemen are recognized by all Veterans groups and the US government legally AS American soldiers (not US soldiers but that is a mere distinction).
What about the former Confederates who fought to free Cuba from Spainish oppression in 1898?
