  • did he say call of duty...?

    klajlkfafasfjalskjfladjfkasljfklaf aslkf

  • Pete was way to ambitious coming in on a second serve from Fed. what was he thinking, return and volley? well, he's still amazing so he can do whatever the hell he wants to do

  • @freedomrace1 it's not like federer's second serve is amazing. 95-105 kicker is pretty standard. he's been coming in on second serves that are better than that for years

  • KEEP PRESSING 8 LOL

  • Damn lol he was like "What the hell?!?! o.o" at 0:31 and at 0:34 through 0:38 he was about to cry

  • Tough to return serve WHEN YOU ARE 4 FEET INSIDE THE BASELINE! I guess he figured he has to try something, anything different.

  • @Nirky the way you return a kick serve is by moving in closer, before the spin takes the ball all over the place. are you serious dude? you ever play tennis before?

  • @MahMohm

"the way you return a kick serve is by moving in closer, before the spin takes the ball all over the place"

Not exactly, the kick serve is designed specifically to keep an opponent from attacking and coming to the net, which is what Sampras was trying to do here. With the high bounce & spin, the returner HAS to stay back to return it, or this happens.

  • @Nirky I'm a former D 1 player from UVA. I think I know how to return a kick serve. You play 3.5 league tennis?

  • @MahMohm

Sampras was 4 feet inside the baseline, just as you wanted him to be, and Fed's kick serve was shoulder height when it got to him.

    He whiffed on it.

Did you want Sampras to be even closer to the service line? If so, exactly where?

A kick serve is designed to keep the returner back, to stop the returner from taking advantage of a less powerful second serve.

  • @Nirky I,m with MahMohm. I too was a good college player although back with wood so going to the net was easier before the monster ground strokes. I always moved up to return kick serves. I also had a mean kicker to keep my opponents back but the good returners came up to hit my kick or I would be all over them at the net. Pete was a little too aggressive expecting it to be severed to the T and got body served or he would have had a good chance at doing what he was trying to do.

  • @Nirky actually you and mahmohm are both correct. your definition of a kicker is right, but mahmohm is right when he says to move in closer before it bounces high AKA taking it early. sampras did this for years off of second serves a lot better than this, as did agassi (kind of expected with him)

  • @cain2335 I always moved up the problem with Pete here is he expected the the serve to the T and got body served. Had the serve been to the T he would have been all over it. Macs comment I thought was out of place he used the same ploy as Pete tried all the time. What made this kick serve (LOOK) so good was Pete surprised by the placement and got jammed not because of the kick.

  • @cain2335 PS How does Nadal make a living. It is by kicking his ball high to opponents backhands to push them back the way kick servers are trying to do. How does Joker handle this and manage to beat him well it is not as Nirky says by staying back Joker moves up to hit it. He can do this because he has a good high strike zone backhand. Agassi would have bone the same.

  • my two absolute faves! from two different times of course!

  • He sure got some balls to do kick serve after having fault.

  • @vlegaspi A kick serve is the safest serve one could hit.

  • That was insane! Where has this serve disappeared?

  • you still have a ways to go

  • @speed9demon2000 mada mada dane

  • Aging is a bitch.

  • @TheWindupDream ba-ka

anime or specifically the twist serve from the prince of tennis is based on that serve.

  • Owned

  • Even the GREAT ONE whiffs ..hahaha

  • where is the 37th second??

  • @reyortsed1 Whenever Federer Kick Serves, the 2nd to last second goes bye bye

  • 0:19 =( poor pete. he's got FML written all over his face

  • poor peter, the wittle kicky caught him off guard, awwwww :(

  • LOL at Sampras, the 1 BH he hit against Nadal's topspin FH in the IW exho was embarrassing to say the least. Scary to think how he would be dominated in todays court speed and racket technology.

  • Man that court is really fast...probably as fast as Wimbledon used to be.

  • come on john quit hyping it pete came way up to receive and press roger and the serve justy exploded in his face. lol if pete remained at the baseline he probably would have made a good return. pete just didnt guess right .

  • That is the greatest kick serve in history (:

  • where is 37 seconds ??!

  • Sampras thought he got it 2 !! hahahahahah

  • FEDERERS SERVE WAS COPIED FROM SAMPRAS!! even tho federer is still awesome enuf to imitate it

  • @TheFatKid128 Uh what? Sampras never had the kind of precision that Federer has, or the variety. Sampras had a BIG serve. If anything Roddick copied Sampras.

  • @Jaygenius it was said even in an interview with federer, that he copied form from sampras, sure its a little varied but the basis was based off of sampras'

  • @TheFatKid128 That's true, but Federer's serve as you see it now has already evolved and changed far beyond Sampras'. They're quite different.

  • @Jaygenius yea i was jsut saying because im a fan of both that federer looked at sampras' serve as a goal, theyre different now yea, sampras is more topspin and federer is more kick

  • how dare you move up on roger federer's second serve!

  • all of these guys just look at the court when this happens...like something is wrong with the court. very funny.

  • Mada Mada Dane :)

  • Maybe jumping in helps him. I don't know. Does Sampras usually jump in and attack opponent's 2nd serve?

  • Sampras was way too inside the box. No chance. Bet he could return it if standing back further. I like both players. No disrespect.

  • Wow

  • Roger= The prince of tennis, now the King

How ironic is that he was actually playing against the old King of tennis, like a dad and a son :)

  • @fanyrf8 c nadal pa nga

  • but pete looks so sad....

  • In mother russia serve kicks you.

  • @steamyjupiter its in soviet russia btw

  • Pete uses my trick of looking at the court as if it's the surface's fault. Nope. It's a topspin serve.

  • mada mada FUCK I WATCH TOO MUCH HENTA-- ERHHH ANIME

  • Holy shit stop comparing fed to a cartoon...

  • @181erob its a compliment.. the cartoon is extremely exaggerated so for federer to achieve the same thing that is achieved in a cartoon is profound

  • what the fuck are you talking about in the highest rated comments

  • @bjarktron there is this anime show about tennis in which the main character can hit a "twist serve" which bounces towards the opponent

  • @bananatree1234567 Probably Prince of Tennis which is retarded. Japan's highest ever ranking for a tennis player is 46 so they have to show their skills through anime.

  • @Mzee1084 Ah I think Kei Nishikori will bump up higher before it's all said and done. He's still really young and really talented.

  • @rac3318 Yeah it was a bit of a tongue and cheek comment. I don't see Nishkori winning a slam but I can see him climb up, perhaps into the top 10.

  • A Twist serve is when it bounces in the opposite side with a kick. A kick serve is when it bounces up without changing much direction.

  • @yoimcrazy a "twist" serve? First time hearing that term in my 20 years playing the sport.

  • @BigMikeSS420 A "twist" serve is a Kick serve. They get the term from a TV show called "Prince of Tennis." The character, Echizen, Ryoma does a Kick Serve, but because of the different translations (because the show is Japanese) it came out as "Twist" serve.

  • @KajiShinKun Not according to homeboy... They are two different things... LoL - Yeah I've seen that anime... bit's and peices... Stupid if you ask me.

  • @BigMikeSS420 heres the deal..a twist serve aka "american twist" is a serve hit with the racket face brushing over and out on the inside part of the ball it gives the ball reverse spin and as you contact it high you get big bounce. if you know any baseball it would be the counterpart of a screwball. jimmy conners used this a lot as he was never a big server also stephan edberg used this to get high to his opponents backhand and then volley away the return.

  • @BigMikeSS420 It's referred more to as the American Twist. I don't know why, don't ask me.

  • what is a kick serve?

  • @ladyboylizard

    /watch?v=mM1P2ej4YtY&feature=related

Watch the motion of the ball, when it hits the ground, it heads off in another direction.

  • @ladyboylizard It is a TopSpin Serve... the ball rebounds and get up quickly... It's used in Seconds Services because it's useful to miss the net

  • Federers pro

  • down below.. this is a kick serve not twist.. kids..

  • you know your good when you can make sampras whiff.

  • this is the ultimate prince of tennis fanboy video. with the angles and the OMG not the face!

  • they are speaking turkish

  • Lol i kinda blame Sampras for this...look how far into the court he was of course the kick would be higher ^_^

  • @xXxWontonxXx

Well, actually it is a tactic. If you take the bal early you can attack it before it get's up to high!

  • @Laxave really you think you can return roger serve gush so many delusional people , i bet oudin can beat you 6-0 please give yourself a favour and keep dreaming about something other than tennis. what is your rating not in your own mind i bet -4 moron

  • @TheAnnibelle

Err.. Okay I think I agree with you. But what I said stands.

I probably won't be able to return federer's serve, but I don't recall saying something like that!

I think your a moron making conclusions without anything that points to that outcome!

  • since when is this called a "twist" serve.......... ive allways known it as a kick serve

  • @AceGuitarR7 Kick serve generally refers to any serve with topspin. Topspin serves refer to a serve that is hit mainly with topspin. Twist serves, or an American twist as some like to call it, refer to a serve that is hit with both topspin and side spin giving the opponent a surprise when it hits the ground. What appears to be a slice serve turns into a topspin serve that nearly bounces the opposite way it was first appearing to go to.

  • @AceGuitarR7 mm i feel kick serve's have more topspin put into it giving it more of a "kick" foward probably about... 7:30 to 1:30.. a twist serve is more of a 8 oclock to 2 oclock hit but u cant put so much power in a twist serve. (note: the references to the times are that of a analog clock and what angle you would hit it at. )

Thats my theory being a tennis player also and have experimented with serves and seen kick serves.. usually u just c kicks serves and twist serves are rarely spoken of

  • @redviolin1231 yes i myself have a kick serve.but people here are saying its a twist serve and even the commentator is saying its a kick serve. and its john mcenroe who i think knows his stuff lol.i know theres a serve where if you hit it just right can kick the other way which is what i thought they meant by a twist serve. i think its more of an american term though. and this serve did not do that, it just had a big kick on it that suprised sampras and he probably shouldnt have tried to step in

  • @AceGuitarR7 hmm ok, but i no longer do kick serves anymore, just a power serve and a topspin serve now. but i found that u have 2 options to return a kick serve i tried with my friend cause he does monster kick serves. one is to stand far back and closer to the middle since kick serves go that way that or run up faster and rise it. (just hit the ball as it rises after contact with the court. but both ways, u have to have alot of speed to pull off.

  • @AceGuitarR7 Lol

  • 0:23 he say Call of Duty :D :D :D :D

  • Why Echizen. It should be Ibu Shinji.

  • Haahaha at 0:25 feds is like "what a kicker"

  • dont insult federer by comparing him to a cartoon idiot

  • @blazingswrd lol calm down dude rofl they have good intentions cause ryoma echizen is supposedly the best tennis player on that show lol apart from his dad and they're just reffering to the kick/twist serve that flies towards the person lol

  • I love pete sampras but this is hilarious..

  • thank god pete did not cry !!

  • for the people who watch prince of tennis and don't actually play tennis there is a difference between kick serve and a twist serve the one roger was doing was the kick not the twist

  • @RockBandNick yeah your right.. twist serve is also a kick but it change direction while kick serve is when it lands it like a super topspin... thats all

  • hey guys who is echizen.

  • @88rafanadal echizen is from an anime called "prince of tennis" it a very good anime it how probably i got so into tennis haha.

  • @88rafanadal Of the Prince Of Tennis, it's an anime.

  • 10 people could handle the power of the twists serve and missed the like button.

  • is it an ace?

  • @nomanno I dunno - what the hell do you think?

  • Echizen, Twist serve. Suisse version

  • 0:32 "Holy shit!"

  • @wilnskyco I applaud you. Appropriate quote! Very well done. =D

  • wow finally someone who could do echizens twist serve

  • Wow...high jump

  • If you want to become a great match player, go to my channel: ( 2knowfun2 ) and watch the video World Class tennis part1/2. Everything that is important to know about tennis is covered in my my two videos.

  • I'd never thought i would see Echizen's serve in real LIFE!

  • lmao, the first thing i see in the comments is all PoT stuff. hahaha.

  • it reminds me of prince of tennis! :D

  • @runebunyip don't you mean WILSON of tennis? lolol

  • mada mada dane

  • @jojandy TOMO......

  • xD Oh ! Ryoma-kun no "twisto savu" !

Like they say in the anime (I know, it's twist serve, but they pronounce it this way x))

  • @MalaikaNina good job.

  • he's the Swedish Echizen

  • @longngo12 swiss dude...swiss

  • @sumnoob99 who cares, at least ppl get what im trying to say

  • @longngo12 i thought he was swiss!

  • @oleab95 he IS swiss

  • I am surprised to see Sampras's hair is thinning.

  • if he was echizen then federer senior must be nanjirou? lol

  • ....this is real tennis, have you ever seen a Japanese man in men's tennis?

  • @dalongbong kei nishikori, takao suzuki, etc.

  • @Alexandahls never heard of them

  • @dalongbong yeah. there's Kimiko Date Krumm, Kei Nishikori, Jiro Sato, Zenzo Shimizu, Shuzo Matsuoka

  • Pete had the best 2nd serve. then comes Krajcek.

  • echizen changed his name to federer when he got older. lol

  • echizen = fed at 12

  • cept it goes even higher hahaha

  • does he still do these kinds of serves?

  • yes

  • @muskie1976 that's an over exaggeration right?

  • @muskie1976 he isnt even 40....

  • age doesnt count, its talent...

  • i wonder how old is the kick serve, was there any players with that serve in the 90's?

  • I recall Edberg and Rafter having great kickers.

  • And yes, the topspin serve has been around for a long time. Obviously some people can get the ball higher up than others, though.

  • kick serve and topspin serve r different fyi

  • Actually, a kick serve is a topspin serve. However, people often equate the former with the twist serve.

The term is used interchangeably which adds to the confusion.

  • "It's the way you hit it"

    Man, I love Federer's swagger.

  • Echizen is that you?

  • LOL

  • haaaaaaaa

  • @SomeRandomAsianBoy hahaha! ur comment is amazing - because im thinking of the same thing! ECHIZEN's counterpart haha - cool!

  • @SomeRandomAsianBoy that was nanjirou

  • best player ever no question

  • bahahaaha i love samprass reaction at 0:31

  • how the hell is that lucky?

  • hes standing inside the baseline to get cath the kick serve before it rises too high

  • OMG! Echizen Ryoma's twist serve! :O xD

  • @ooOOTaToOOoo yeah i was about to say...that was some Prince of Tennis shit lol way to call it before me =)

  • @ooOOTaToOOoo haha - when i first saw this - we have the same thought: echizen's twist serve! cool!

  • @ooOOTaToOOoo No man... Echizen Ryoma's twist serve would hit his face! :D

  • wat year was this?

  • I think it just confused the bejesus out of sampras.

  • Hahahahah !!

Sampras wants to return the service with a volley ! LMAO !

  • he was definitely going for a flashy return DEEP inside the court, because this was an exhibition match. Pete is a 14-time GS winner and he probably knows what he is doing... better than all of us. :p

  • lol, no man's land, if u were goina hit it on the rise u shoulve went way farther up

  • he deserves it for standing inside the service line

  • wtf is he doing 7 feet inside the baseline

  • return volley.. this is sampras dude

  • trying not to let the ball bounce up too high and he probably wants to attack the net if possible

  • where´s teh ball ... ?

  • Incorrect. An American twist is hitting the ball left to right to give it topspin and sidespin. A kick serve is just pure topspin.

  • basically ball spins forward for kick and diagonally to teh right for american twist

    am i right

thats how i know of it

  • Yeah. Bounces high and right (for righties)

  • Well Sampras is a champ, but look how far up in the court hes trying to return the serve. Bad.......
