So a couple questions, i have been looking at videos on this camera forever and is there a setting that will allow you to do this? Because the longest exposure is 30 seconds i thought. And how do you like this camera?
@tmick990990 You are correct. the longest exposure IS 30 seconds. In these I set it to the max which is 30 seconds. It is kind of limiting. I wish it were up to 4 minutes like my Canon was. I don't see any reason not to, it's just a software setting certainly no hardware limitation. I do like this camera, although I wish it had the focus motor built-in. This means lenses which rely on that feature aren't able to focus automatically. Like my Tokina 11-16 lens.
@GNDxero Ok so you did this time lapse with software? I'm still new to this haha but it is very interesting. And with the focus motor not being built in does it make a ton of noise while focusing? like in videos will you hear it? You are the first person who has responded to any of my questions. Thanks!
@tmick990990 Yeah, i used quicktime to stitch it all together. The lenses all have ultrasonic motors which are VERY quiet but you can still hear it focusing.
@GNDxero You could actually record each exposure longer by using bulb mode. The only problem is you need to keep the shutter depressed for the full time or use a cable release.
@ElectrifyPhotography@tmick990990 Well, you'd have to hold the shutter every interval, that would be a lot of work. I've taken timelapses with 15,000 pictures! Here's what I got. Go up and check my description. I've put a link to it.
@ElectrifyPhotography So you're saying that if i wanted a 30min time lapse i would have to stand there and hold the button the entire time? Cause thats what i pictured in my head when you said that.
@ElectrifyPhotography The Bulb mode doesn't work while using the built-in intervalometer, so 30secondes is all what you can get as a max exposure unless you're using an external intervalometer!
@GNDxero if I'm not mistaken the 'bulb' setting allows you to hold the shutter open as long as you want, without using a remote you need to physically hold the shutter button down as long as you want the shutter to be open then to close the shutter release the button, you can do the same with a remote but not have to hold the button.. sorry.. I don't know the specifics but this is what I've read on Nikon's web site, yes, I'm a Nikon user, hope this helps..
@1kylehill You are correct. In bulb mode, using a remote, you have to hold the button down, and when you release it closes the shutter. Unless you have a remote, with a "hold" button. Which mine does, you can depress the button, then slide it up and it locks it on. An intervalometer works on the same premise. It can "hold" the shutter open for whatever it is set to.
Oh yeah, sorry what I mean is; for example if I've chosen 'manual' you're then supposed to be able to hold a piece of paper up in front of the lens to adjust it, etc.. How do i get to that point? All that happens when I press 'manual' is it takes me back to the normal menu.
Stupid question.. I can't seem to find how to manually white balance. I can find the setting but how do you actually adjust it as there's only an exposure button?
@MrArad8 Congrats on the cam. Not sure what exactly you want help with but if you check out my website fstop.onthis.net I have some timelapse tutorials there! Thanks!
Cam is great. However, as always it's about the lens. For night stuff, it has to be a fast lens (ie f/2.8) Built in intervalometer is good. However, doesn't allow for some manual settings with it. ie. Bracketing with interval shooting. :)
I tried the automatic and nightscene adjustment but it was not very good for filming the stars. I really wanted to make the whole 999 pictures…so i tried to connect the camera with the laptop via usb to keep up the battery status, but it didn´t work (i i dont want to buy the nikon energy adapter:/ ). Any idea?
Hey, going to try this out, how do you get the photo's to go through so quickly, is there a way to do this on the camera and save it as a movie mode? Or do you have to add in every photo onto a movie editor and make each frame quick?
btw, anyone know where this song is from?

@KY1Enewton Basically any WB mode that isn't Auto is manual. So if you set it to sunlight it stays there. :)

LifeByFay 8 months ago
@LifeByFay you have to stitch them together after in a program like quicktime pro. file > import image sequence.
Or, you can try the "miniature mode" on the d5100, which has a timelapse like effect.
