Toyota stopped selling the Hilux in the states because Toyota was unable to compete with GM and Ford. They then shifted to the larger (at the time) Tacoma.

Since then Toyota has been a much improved company and are now #1 in the world, though marginally in terms of market-share. Since Tacoma has been well received by the American market they have not changed it. Introducing the Hilux would only steal from Tacoma sales. It is more cost efficient to just keep it Tacoma only.

Trucks are never "efficient" unless comparing to other trucks anyway. That diesel would never pass emissions here anyways.
