how did you determine what angle to cut the individual slats for the drum? you must have used some sort of mathematical equation based on the desired diameter?
I was surprised to see you turning wood on your lathe. I would have expected oil and sawdust to mix in ways that would make for unhappy outcomes for a Myford. Have there been problems, or is this a non-issue?
@TitusLivy777 I don't see a problem with this. Cast iron swarf mixed with oil is more harmful than wood shavings. I try to hold the shop vac near the work when turning wood and essential for MDF to avoid breathing the harmful dust.
@compaq1275 The most I can melt in my furnace is about 5Kg. You can see the furnace in detail in my Metal Casting at Home part 9 video. I have melted more than that using just a blowtorch and container.
Thanks for all your fast answers. Here are a few more questions haha You use a emlution paint first, what is it? Like a sealer primer etc...? Over here we do have some of the things you are using. we went out and bought sodium silcate in a allready mixed liquid. we bought some sodium carbinate pure 100% from a ceramic shop over here. The blue paint was it krylon or just any kind of spray paint? The fillets we were going to use auto body putty (bondo) it is called. that is whywe are asking Thanks
@fly2000jtb The paint is what we use to paint interior wall, you may call it latex paint. Its just to seal the MDF the I use any cheap can of spray paint to give it a smoth finish, hence the metalic blue! the Bondo is good for fillets but I use decoraters filler for the small ones.
@gblpst81 Yes I'll do the mould. Finished casting is like you describe, like a top hat. The recessed rectangle at the top will be cut out to make an appature.
Man, you are the best metal caster I've ever seen on youtube. By the way, I'm planning to do some aluminum and brass casting. I'm planning to cast a computer desk. What do you think, is it very difficult or ? I think that the wood pattern will be the easiest part of the casting process...
@myfordboy I'm planning to cast a whole desk. I know I need a lot of sand, and metal too. I'm planning to make the top plate from aluminum, drawers and other parts from brass or aluminum (depends how much scrap metal I have).
And, when I finish it, should I spray the brass with colorless varnish, so it doesn't oxidize ? Thanks
@gblpst81 I plan to cast it with the base at the bottom. The core will sit on the round section of the base. Its quite heavy so I am hoping it will stay in place. The round part on the bottom of the base is just larger than the bottom of the core so it can be accuratly located by eye. The parting line will be the bottom of the base so the parting line is not flat but has the routed area in it. Should cast it next weekend, watch this space!

@pacificcoast 360 divided by number of segments reqired gives angle required.

@bebek1993 Are planning to cast a whole desk or just some brackets? You would need a lot of metal for a desk top!

@bebek1993 Wow , big casting! How will you melt all that metal?
myfordboy 1 year ago
@myfordboy That is next on my thinking list. :) I think to melt that metal, in a big crucible, with charcoal. What do you think ?
