"chan"is just the mandarin pronounciation. a lot of dialects of mandarin pronounce "zen". for example in my hometown ,changsha, hunan province, we prounce as "zen". I believe some dialects are older than mandarin
Hi Jimmy, I use "Zen" because it is the best known word for English speakers. You may be surprised to learn that if you go to Jiangxi Province, where many of the great Zen temples exist (Dongshan, Huangbo, etc) the local dialect often pronounces the word "Chan" as "Zen." No doubt this is one reason why the Japanese use this pronunciation. It was used in China and still is used in some places.
oh, I see, Jianxi you say, yeah, 'Zen' would be the correct pronounciation in the local dialect. I know a large portion of Kanji was pronounced similar to 'Go On'(Wu Yin), which is the pronounciations of the Wu dialect. and Jiangxi is the central-west part of the historic Wu state.
Hi Andy Ferguson. Thanks for sharing this great vid. Of interest to Zennies, go to the southmountaintours dot com website for more info on Zen. Click on links and bargains. Three is a free Zen Ancestors chart.
Thanks for your kind comments. Sorry I don't know what the Chinese sutra says. The Vermont Zen Center is chanting the Heart Sutra at Bodhidharma's place.

More than often Bodhidharma is confused with Buddhabhadra of Shaolin.
