ill tell you why some people nowadays think this is lame...this is attempt to make cats "cool" for the adolescent age groups...and that's not what the essence of the show is...cats is not a rock opera...see rent or listen to the wall if that's what you're looking for...cats is kind of an emotional "personality study" set to a (very well put together) variety show contemporary and classical music...this does not represent the show in any way...especially the british version

Well I have seen all 3 who played the part and seeing Mr. Mann live I can say I prefer his version. As fas as unpopular Terrance has more working credits than John in acting. Terrance is also an accomplished writer, director and producer. I think there may be a more personal hidden agenda behind not liking Terrance. And I certainly agree, he does remind me of Tim Curry who is also a superply talented individual.

John Partridge was better in Cats, but I do think Terrance Mann has a very good voice and did a fairly good job on his performance here. Though his Power of the Night in Critters was way better than this and I loved him as a rock star bounty hunter....and he was really good in Assassins too.

Both Terrance and John are great. But let's keep things in perspective, if it wasn't for Paul Nicholas and Terrance Mann doing Rum Tum Tugger, we wouldn't be watching John. Terrance created the character on Broadway in the original Broadway cast. However, I do agree that this 80's style version is pretty weird. It's not what they did on stage.

Yes, i agree. John Partridge is better, but I do like the jazzy style on this. I'm learning this dance. I know every word in every song and every bit of choreography to every song in the CATS 1998 video by Andrew Loyd Webber. I'm trying to learn this one right now.

Mann is good. I think everyone prefers Partridge because they are more used to him and let's face it Partridge is better. But this guy is good too. They have done alot of improvements on the show since this so it is different. But John Partridge has a whole different air to him. John has a different sense of confidence and sexuality that is played out stronger than I see here. And John is actually sexualy appealing :) I prefer John Partridge by infinity though.

Well I saw him live in 1985 on stage doing this ...and he was awesome!!! This video is a bit different than his performance on stage though..I do prefer his presentation of Rum Tum Tugger on stage....I still have the record with the original 80's cast on it.

for reference, make sure to listen to the 1983 version of the cats which is broadway, then listen to the 1981 west end cast version, and you see how much Terrance Mann changed the performance of the song to what is now thought of as the way it's performed.

the original broadway and west end versions of this tune are on most of your well known music download services. For the Terrance Mann version make sure to download the Cats 1983 version as that is the Broadway cast.

you can't compare 'this video" to Terrance Mann's performance on stage. Listen to him on the Broadway Cast album or cd. This version was put together for MTV, and has the added 80's synth and drums not present in the stage version. Compare Mann to Partridge based only on the stage work, and both are excellent, though I prefer Mann because that's the version I knew for years.

I think that, out of the three I've heard, (Terrence Mann, the orginal broadway Tugger, the original westend Tugger and John Partridge, the video Tugger) that John is easily the best, but you have to keep in mind that he probably based his performance on the ones that came before him and combined them to make the best one possible!
