What many of you fail to realize is there aren't any street lamps. IT IS PITCH BLACK!!! It's only obvious the oncoming cars involved couldn't see the havoc unfolding just a few seconds in front of them on the highway. I agree there are stupid drivers out there, but stupid drivers did not play a role in this horrific accident. No street lamps did. Think about it.

part of it is, many LA highways are pretty dark.  so when something happens like that, and you have a bunch of lights from cars coming directly at you, it can get pretty difficult to see up ahead, even with headlights. if you look, that side of the freeway has no lights.

LOL, my favorite story of driving in LA was in 2005. I was driving on the 101 just past Winnetka at 3am and the sky opened up and it POURED so hard that I couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of me. I gently applied the breaks until I came to a crawl, maybe 10mph, even that was almost too fast. Once the downpour stopped and I started driving on, I passed about 20 cars that hydroplaned off the side of the road or were turned backwards. People in LA don't know how to fucking drive.

SLOW DOWN! Death rates in ALL countries would be slashed if we all just SLOWED DOWN. I'd drive to work at between 50 and 55 mph, boy racers would FLY past me in their cars, but they'd be getting back in their cars as I would be clocking in. A time saving of a few seconds, more fuel burned more brakes burned etc etc. Driving too fast is a learned habit.

u know what's the problem? When people drive, they don't see what's ahead of them and brake the last minute, when I drive and I see a scenery coming closer to me, I apply the brakes immediately. If you drive and the car is getting nearer, it means the person is slower than you, if the scenery(car) is moving really fast, you brake much faster or rather earlier. It's obvious they don't have safe driver's skill.

It's not speed limits that is the problem. It is the simple fact that if you're driving faster, you should leave more distance between you and the driver ahead. You should also be cautious of vehicles driving along your sides, motorcyclists and stupid wannabe racers. Also don't forget to do ur maintenance to avoid unnecessary hassle while on the road, especially a freeway. Always look ahead.
