  • You are quite helpful, but I also notice in songs (japanese rock music) I hear "wo" sounding particles a lot. I looked up the lyrics and found the 'wo' sound is the を character. So is pronunciation ultimately up to choice? or simply different from speaking, when singing?

  • Did you say: "it sounds the same DESU NE?" This is funny! ^^

  • teach the meaning, not the sound...

  • @Enanurri be glad she's teaching anything >.> just google search it

  • I actually asked my Sensei about the difference between saying 'o' or 'wo' because she always taught us that yea it's read wo, but say 'o' instead when I was in first year. But when I met a japanese student teacher, when she tell me to write particle 'o' she said 'wo'. Hence me asking my teacher why we never said 'wo' but only 'o' she never knew why she didn't think that in the first place

  • What a coincidence because Since Yesterday and today I was trying to figure out the difference:) My Hero ;)

  • she is looking better and better with each video

  • She is sooooo cute

  • Hi there, I'm new to your channel. I just wanna say you really look like the girl from Hana Yori Dango, Makino Tsukasa. :)

  • Love your hair :D

  • 日本語を大好きです!

  • I like you're haircut here ^^

  • Hiroko, that is the best haircut I've every seen on anyone! Way to rock the awesome hair.

Anyway, this video just confuses me more. Linguist Eleanor Jorden (who is usually ridiculously accurate) wrote a textbook (JSL) that strongly asserted that a 'wo' pronunciation is wrong. Later I read that many female popstars are actually pronouncing it 'wo' recently, but nobody really uses it speaking and it's a weird trait of pop music. Has Hiroko or anyone else heard of this phenomena?

  • doesnt it depend on where u live in japan? thats what my japanese teacher told me o.o

  • Geez, your eyes are big. That's not bad, it's pretty cute, just surprising. It's interesting to see how much your hair changes between videos. Oh, and of course, interesting video.

  • chio wa?

    Does that mean : I will ?

  • "kyou wa" - meaning "today"

  • thanks! i have always wondered about the difference.

  • Very good explanation !!

    Ash.

  • First, I'm not an expert.

In today's Japanese, the correct pronunciation of を seems to be "o". I have seen a government guideline which suggested お and を should share the same sound. Besides that, the fact of ゑ and ゐ having been totally replaced by え and い also suggests を can be replaced by お, but they kept it unchanged as を was commonly used as particle.

It may not be completely wrong to pronounce it as "wo", but it won't be considered as today's standard Japanese.

  • Hiroko. See, I told you your hair changes a lot. What I cannot figure out is how you make it grow so fast. I would like to know your secret. Mine is thinning on top.

  • thank you for this Hiroko it helped me alot and looking very pretty ^-^
