  • Thats alot of smoke.

  • Amazing how long smoking in a pressurized tube was an everyday thing.

  • It surprised me that the Air Force aviation were lower in standards than commercial airlines. My four sons are in the military.

  • losss of humman lives is always sad.MAY THERE SOULS RIP.

  • ouch

  • 44:00 So, God was there with her and protected her?

Pity about the victims who died due to the toxic smoke or were burned alive. I guess none of them were worth protecting or saving.

You can't have it both ways; you can't thank God for saving you without acknowledging that he FAILED to save 23 other people.

  • He should not have been reseting the circuit breakers. When a circuit breaker pops in flight they should not touch it! Have the mechanics inspect the airplane. But no, the pilot knows better than they do. Fire probably would not have started or gone past more than a smolder if he would have left it alone instead of continuing to arc those wires.

  • @josenar145 This was in 1983, things were much different then, and even still today if a circuit breaker pops the captain can reset it if he/she deems it safe to do so. suppose its the cabin crews fault they didnt have personal breathing equipment? or halon fire extinguishers? or hell even a smoke detector is the toilet? or floor lighting? think before you comment.

  • Sadly 90 seconds is quite enough time to evacuate a plane that *isn't* filled with smoke. Had they tried to land as soon as they knew there was something wrong, the passengers may all have gotten out in time. But like anything else, hindsight isn't too helpful after the event.

  • This shit is so emotionally scary o god I cried so much when the crew only counted 22 people outside

  • Why is NTSB silent about the unprofessional actions of the Firemen & Rescue teams on the ground in America ?? Shouldn't they have done more to stop the fire in the aisle/cabin, the way they sprayed the cockpit ???

NTSB seems to be expert at making scapegoats out of foreign pilots by hook or by crook; while overlooking technical/operational faults within the American system !!!

  • NTSB divorces professionalism when foreign crew/airline is involved; to save the arse of American corporates like Douglas and Boeing.

  • This is so sad :( And scarier than horror movies

  • I flew on a DC-10 in 1998 from Newark NJ to Santago, Chile with no problems whatsoever. Beautiful Machine and very smooth flying with the RR engines. I guess I was lucky or all the glitches were fixed on this bird by then as a lot of carriers still use them as cargo planes

  • How come the NTSB just pointed its finger at the Captain? They didn't have any idea where the fire even started or why. Even if the Captain landed earlier, the flash-fire would still have happened. This is VERY unfair of the NTSB.

  • @VidAlienX Ditto, this was completely out of his control. I the only other think that might have a difference, yet suicidal idea, is to try to descend faster then that aircraft's normal operating parameters, and that is insane because it could have ripped the plane apart during the decent. Even on landing, if the plane has survived the suicidal decent, the flash fire still would have occurred.

  • @VidAlienX That's exactly what I thought. The fire started because when the doors are opened, an unlimited supply of oxygen enters the cabin and starts the flash-fire. At least the captain and crew managed to get the plane down safely. It could've gotten worse if the plane crashed and everyone died

  • I never trust the DC-10. I always check my tickets to make sure I don't have a Death Chamber to fly in!

  • I know that some people have nicknamed DC-9s and DC-10s "Death Contraptions" + their respective model number. As I watch more episodes of this series, I am starting to believe DCs really are "death contraptions."

  • @Nariasan I call Dc-9,10 Death Chamber. Makes more sense to me

  • @Nariasan - I respectfully disagree, these are very capable aircraft and when properly maintained, their safety record is on par with other similar aged aircraft. Look into 707, 727 and 737 accident stats and compare...

  • @Nariasan Just ignore those comments. most of the time it's just your average ignoramus who makes assumptions after only watching air crash investigations. just a little research proves that the "Death Contraptions" statement is far from true. In fact, McDonnell Douglas made some rock solid workhorses, most of the crashes are a result of human error. If McDonnell Douglas planes were dangerous, they would have been removed from service 30+ years ago. The same can be said for boeing, and airbus.

  • I never trusted DC-9's.............

  • @budgerigarz well.... I never sat on one before. So I will never know how its like! Only through these airplane series!

  • Here is a link to Stan Rogers singing 'Mary Ellen Carter' live, with a very interesting and apropo introduction and tribute, describing how singing the song helped one man survive in the frozen ocean after a shipwreck. You can find the song here on UTube using the search string:

Stan Rogers - Mary Ellen Carter Kensington TV

  • When I started watching this I wasn't aware that this was the flight that killed Stan Rogers. I never had the pleasure of seeing Stan live, but years later I saw his brother Garnet performing and it was magical. Beautiful souls both of them.

Rise again, rise again - though your heart it be broken

    And life about to end

No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend.

Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again

    Stan Rogers, Mary Ellen Carter

RIP Stan, you're missed by many Canadians
